Final Score: Dodgers 103,000; Cubs 25,000

At The Biz of Baseball, Maury Brown reports that a full post-season share for the 2008 WS Champion Phillies amounted to $351.504.48, and full shares for the AL champion Rays were good for $223,390.05 apiece.

The Cubs' share of the total players' pool came to a little over $1.5MM. The team awarded 50 full shares of $25,032.89, with 11.03 partial
shares and five cash awards also being distributed.

(Note: if the average Cub earned around $4.7MM last year, that $25,000 post-season share amounts to a bonus of .53% per man.)

By comparison, the Cubs' NLDS conquerors, the Dodgers, earned about $6.1MM of the players' pool, distributing 49 full shares worth $102,793.54 each, plus a few partial shares and 22 cash awards.

I wonder who got that .03 of a share...

Going-away present for Yosh Kawano.

I have to assume that Yosh got a full share.  My sense is most teams do that for the main clubhouse guys.  My own bet is that it went to Heinie Massman.  Or AZ Phil.  Or Kellie Pickler.  Or 3/44.

3/44 could use a bonus...get itself a nice new font, maybe a little color.

Ahhh, Heinie Massman. Good times...

I know this isn't a Giants blog (really?), but I'm curious about their decision to let Vizquel walk away and pursue Renteria. In 2008, Vizquel posted an Age Over Replacement Player of +17. I know it'd be hard to expect him to duplicate that again in 2009, but for example, as a Tiger, Renteria only put up an AORP of +9. It seems like this team is starting to get away from what got them where they are today.

I see what you did there.

I don't think they're really looking for old players. What they like is players who are after their prime, which explains the interest in players like Renteria and Zito.

Don't second guess the GM. He's a little closer to the biz of pro baseball than you. Maybe he knows something you don't. Ass.

My Ricciardi impression. Sabean should start working on his.

Cubs no longer talking with Padres?

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees...

seems to be the opposite of the, we've found a third team and just waiting for new ownership to agree to it angle...

Being the NY Daily News, I don't buy it...

Pedroia gets a 6-yr extension from Red Sox....if Soto has another good season next year, Cubs better go that route, hell if he has a good half-season.

Braves are about to offer it apparently, same NY Daily News link from comment #10.

Doesn't Burnett currently have a partial no-trade clause? Since Atlanta won't hand those out, I wonder if Burnett will accept their offer.

Burnett had a partial NTC and an opt out clause? Yikes.

I was thinking the Braves might have some interest in Marquis, but the more FA's that come off the market, the more teams may be looking at Marquis.

Rotoworld: The Giants' pursuit of Bob Howry has accelerated since the Cubs' failure to offer him arbitration on Monday. Howry to the Giants has been talked about for weeks, and a deal could be close now. He could get the same kind of contract that Jeremy Affeldt did (two years, $8 million) and join Affeldt in a setup role in front of Brian Wilson.

I say $4 for Howry - Giants can have him.

CAn you believe the Giants are offering 2 yrs - 18mil to Renteria! First Zito and now washed up Renteria...Howry for $4mil is a joke...glad we didn't go into arbitrations with Howry...

cubs sign chad fox to minor league contract
does this mean we can have another postseason
roster move when he goes on d.l.?

2.75 m for howry
giants think he was overused this year
with proper handling they hope he can
be more productive

is this the same howry who claims he pitches better with a heavy workload?

Yeah, I thought he supposedly needed more work in April & May to get the velocity on his fastball up into the 93-94 mph range consistently by June and afterwards. The explanations seem to be changing to fit the inconvenient facts, although in fairness to Howry, the news item did say this was the Giants' belief, not HR Bob's. I like Bob. I just didn't like how he pitched last year. Batters consistently made all kinds of solid contact on him from June on -- shot after shot after shot. It was painful to watch.

==================================

ROKFISH: Chad Fox would have to be added to the Cubs 40-man roster before he can be placed on the 15-day or 60-day DL, but if a player is on his club's 15-day or 60-day DL on August 31st, he can be replaced on a post-season roster by any player (regardless of position) who was a member of the organization as of midnight on 8/31.

Also, any player who was on his club's 25-man roster on August 31st who is placed on the 15-day or 60-day DL after August 31st can be replaced on a post-season roster by any player who was in the organization as of mignight 8/31.

And any player who is injured during a post-season series (LDS, LCS, or WS) can be replaced DURING THE SERIES, but in order for this to happen, the move must be approved by the Commissioner, the replacement player must play the same position as the injured player and must have been in the organization as of midnight 8/31, and the injured player cannot return to his club's active roster for the duration of the post-season.

  • the 'crosstown classic' sure has lost it's magic with interleague. the excitement level is barely noticable...maybe it's a bit more hype in the city, itself.

  • Well he didn't leave a mark so its not that bad.

    Fuck that.

    Facts:

    He choked her.

Her brother tackled him to separate him.

He cooled off by shooting his gun in the garage.

I don't have to like him on the team I follow.

And you are others are free to not give a shit about his personal misgivings if you so choose as well.

  • Sure, no marks and some inconsistencies in the witness's statements. But firing your gun into garage wall immediately after an argument and punching out your car window is still threatening and out of control behavior. There was certainly enough for MLB to think it warranted a 30-game suspension.

  • I'd prefer they be flexible with the closing situation depending on matchups. You're not really adding a lefty reliever if you use him strictly as a closer.

  • Stockpiling young talent isn't only for trading for someone like Chapman though. Even with an elite closer winning the World Series is basically a crap shoot so the key is to get to the playoffs as much as possible and not just mortgage everything on one year. Once you get there an elite bullpen certainly helps but the playoffs can be won by one hitter or starting pitcher getting hot (Murphy, Molina, Baumgardner) and a closer might not be able to stop that.

  • I'm also not crazy about press convictions. As the police report noted, there were no marks on the lady in question. There's a TMZ link (of course) to her police pictures, as well.

I think the only way this trade goes real bad is if Cubbery intervenes and Chapman is suddenly bad for some reason.

  • I am right there with you closing in on 60.

I don't care that much about "mortgaging" one player who is not only blocked by two guys, but is not ready to hit the majors for at least a couple years.

There is no reason why this team, this year, can't have a real shot at something NONE of us have experienced.

Further, I don't feel that even if they fall short that they have ruined their farm system.

I have made my opinion clear here, with others, Warren was shit on the Cubs save one spot start.

  • Trading for Warren, Warren sucking, getting Warren back for Chapman plus 3 prospects, sounds like Revenge of The Yankees on the former Boston executive. Old rivalries never die.

I pray to the heavens above Chapman doesn't suck for some reason, or he'll be booed out of town faster than a Todd Hundley revival meeting.

  • This offseason, after some ridiculous playoff run and Chapman saving every game from here until the end of the postseason striking out 27/9innings, I welcome anyone to quote this thread and call me a dummy: I hate this trade, and my hate is 2 parts Chapman makes this team less likeable and 1 part that's a ridiculous overpay for 30 regular season innings and, at tops, 10 postseason innings. Already hoping they don't extend him.

Charlie 5 hours 34 min ago view
  • btw...Thanks AZ Phil. I'm really enjoying your take on this trade.

  • I'm a bit disappointed on the Warren experience. Essentially they gave Castro away for crickets (OK, well they signed Zobrist with the Castro salary dump). Otherwise one might look at it as Chapman for Castro and our #1 minors prospect (Torres) + McKinney/Crawford. Seems pricey for a 2 month rental. We will see if this price tag is that steep in a relative way based on the remaining deadline deals for relievers.

Cubster 5 hours 57 min ago view
  • Yep. One of the great things about this team (in addition to being really good at baseball) was the "likable" factor. Feels a bit different now. Who knows...maybe Chapman will be the king of the dance parties.
