Kerry Wood is Officially an Ex-Cub

Kerry Wood passed his physical with the Cleveland Indians and has signed a 2-year/$20 million contract with an option for a third year based on "a vesting mechanism."

As reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer...

Wood, 6-5, 211 pounds, lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., with his wife Sarah and their two children. It's believed that the Indians moving their spring training facility from Winter Haven, Fla., to Goodyear, Ariz., this year played a part in Wood coming to Cleveland.

GM Mark Shapiro also added right-hander Joe Smith earlier this week at the winter meetings to pitch in front of Wood in the pen. Smith was acquired in a three-team, 12-player trade with the Mets and Mariners.

"The signing of Kerry Wood brings to the Cleveland Indians a powerful presence in the back of our bullpen and in our clubhouse," Shapiro said. "Kerry fills our need for a closer and fits our team's culture perfectly as he is a dominant talent and an outstanding teammate and person."

My feeling is I prefer, in order: 1) Cubs win the WS with the players that I like 2) Cubs win the WS 3) Players I like win the WS elsewhere So I'd rather the Cubs win with Wood, but if we win without him I'll be happy. And if neither of those can occur, it would be great to see Wood win with the Indians. I was thrilled to see Grace leadoff the 9th with a hit off of Rivera and end up finally winning with the D-Backs. So maybe Wood will have an equally good experience after parting ways with the Cubs.

rotoworld says deal is for $20.5 M with an $11M third year team option that is automatic if he finishes 55 games in either of the next 2 years.

and so goes the last of the "piss on my hands" legacy cubs players. at least kerry "i can't stop now" wood isn't pissing on buildings anymore.

Just "finishes"? If so, the deal is basically a three year deal -- for instance, in a year in which Wood lost a month's worth of games, he finished 56 games.

CARLOS: Incentive-performance bonuses can't be tied to statistics like saves, wins, K, ERA, or WHIP, et al for pitchers, or BA, SLG, OBP, HR, RBI, SB, Fielding %, et al for position players.

The bonuses have to be for things like days spent on the active roster (25-man roster), All-Star Game selection, awards like MVP, Cy Young, or Rolaids Relief, and pitching stats like appearances, innings pitched, games started, and/or games finished, and it's games, games started, and/or plate appearances for position players.

So Kerry's stipulation of "games finished" implies he must pitch the final out of the game, regardless of it being a save situation or not i assume?

CPH2133: The last relief pitcher who is on the mound for a club gets "credit" for the Game Finished (GF) for that team for that game, no matter whether the team wins or loses, even if the pitcher can't get an out in the bottom of the 9th and blows a 10-run lead. So there is a "GF" for every game of the season for every club except a game where the starting pitcher throws a Complete Game. (A starting pitcher who throws a Complete Game gets credit for a "CG" but not for a "GF").

Last year, the Cubs had 159 GF as a team, with the three missing "GF" the result of one game being rained out that was not made up, and two "CG" (Dempster had one, and of course Zambrano threw a no-hitter). Kerry Wood appeared in 65 games in 2008, had 40 Save Opportunities and converted 34 (85%), but he also had 56 GF (Howry was second on the team in GF with 27, Marmol had 22, Wuertz had 13, and Lieber and Cotts had seven a piece).

Since Saves and/or Save Conversion % (as well as ERA, WHIP, and K) can't be used to qualify a pitcher for a performance bonus, a "Game Finished" (GF) is the closest stat that can be applied to closers for that purpose. But otherwise "Game Finished" is a pretty meaningless statistic.

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
