The Cub Reporter Adds a Reporter

Effective immediately, Joe Aiello of "View From The Bleachers" is
joining us here at TCR. Joe started his blog back in October of
'03--the "Dark Time"--and over the years he turned VFTB into one of the
true stalwart Cub blogs.

We're thrilled to have him.

Great news.

You guys will have enough writers to field a team pretty soon.

yeah, but some of them just play on the taxi squad :)

Welcome, Joe! Best of luck!

Welcome Joe! Glad to have you!

As I've been reporting, switch hitter Milton Bradley remains the Cubs' No. 1 target for the outfield, Cubs people re-confirmed with me today. Bradley led the AL in OPS at .999 this year. The Cubs tell me they're not worried at all about Bradley's mercurial behavior. They like the fact that he might be able to light a fire or two in a laid-back clubhouse.

is that 3/44, the part about the Cubs liking that he could kick some ass in the clubhouse?

I'm still quite sick, hope to be back writing sooner rather than later....

It probably wasn't stated quite that way before, but it's been implied.

Hope you feel better- that's a helluva cold you've got.

it's horrid...

started last Tuesday, felt fine Thursday, went downhill again over the weekend....

Suck it up wimp.

I have...but the cost of not missing work and keeping the home-life at a happy medium is to skip writing at TCR.

I think the winter meetings did me in.

Get lots of rest. Ideally while at work.

Out of curiosity, what are your symptoms?

I had a dry cough for a few days about a month ago, and then suddenly it plunged into my chest and became a persistent wet, hacking cough. That and extreme fatigue were mostly the only symptoms, though there has been some occasional stuffiness and feverish feelings.

I wish I could tell you how long it lasts, but over a month later I'm still waiting for it to end.

started with a bad cough, sore throat, horrible headaches and that achy/fatigue feeling...thought I kicked it pretty quick, but it came back with a vengence over the weekend. The Christmas party on Thursday and the red wine probably didn't help matters. Now I'm hacking up all kinds of stuff and still have the horrible headaches. The achy/fatigue feeling comes and goes now...

my rather hectic schedule and general disregard for making time to go to the doctor probably don't help...

I also recommend you get on some antibiotics though if you're fighting one for a month.

Sounds like two cases of walking pneumonia.

This could also be the influenza virus. Respiratory flus are out there. The achy/fatigue feeling and headaches could be fever related. Recommended actionable items from Dr. Whipple:

1) Go to a doctor and get a blood test for bacterial infection. If positive get on antibiotics. Don't get on antibiotics without the test unless absolutely necessary or you'll be partially to blame for the upcoming plague.

2) Slow down! Take a day or two off of work. Don't pull a Jim Henson. You're much less productive dead.

3) Have some chicken soup. It's good for you.

4) Take your temperature and take ibuprofen and/or acetaminophen ("and" if your fever doesn't break with just one after 8 hours). A rectal thermometer isn't necessary. Chad swears by them. There's no reason to walk around with a fever even if it's only from a cold if you don't have to. You're just making yourself and everyone who you complain to miserable (I keed!).

5) Drink plenty of fluids. Don't drink any solids.

Feel better!

I can see where drinking solids might be hazardous to your health.

Is there evidence that having a glass or two of vino exacerbates a cold or sinusitis?

Looks like the Hawaii fall league is toast.

Writer says a second, lower-level Arizona fall league will be announced shortly.

As someone who drives long distances for minor league games, major league games, spring training, etc., even I can't picture myself going all the way to Hawaii and wanting to watch a baseball game.

The Padres should have gotten rid of Giles when they had the chance. He might be a bit distracted this year given that he is now being sued for $10 million by an ex-girlfriend who alleges that he battered her while she was pregnant and caused her to have a miscarriage. Cheri Olivera's lawsuit accuses Giles of hitting and slapping her in the face, shaking and kicking her, and battering her twice when she was pregnant with his child.

Will Mr. Aiello provide some updates soon on the Peavy trade?

Glad to have you aboard, Joe.

Greetings, Joe. Are you going to adopt a Cub-themed nickname, e.g. Cubman or Cubist? Or perhaps reader The Joe can further distinguish himself. The Joe, if you have trouble, I'm sure Ryno will be glad to provide a striking-if-somewhat-fatalistic Radiohead lyric by which you can call yourself.

I think Rob's building an army. The showdown between TCR and BCB seems inevitable.

My nickname in Mobwars on Facebook is Steel Shank. Does that count?

Welcome aboard. Looking forward to hearing another perspective on the Cubs.

Screw you rook! now carry our luggage to the bus.

And who cuts your hair? Veggamatic?

Funny S-T quote:
"The Cubs just signed a guy who's so fast, he already has run past Felix Pie on the outfield depth chart and looks like he's about to run Pie right out of the organization."

Looks like you don't have to carry THIS anymore, Cubnut

BTW... Clay Rapada was up and down (AAA) with Detroit last year. Did Okay overall.

Welcome Joe. Hope you give us less 3/44 stuff than you did on the other blog. (I keed)

Actually, you should have ROB G clue you in on what "3/44" means - if he hasn't yet.

It is trademarked to TCR.

Did Joe also leave MVN because he has a mouth like Rod Blagojevich and he was sick of their fucking censorship?

No, just sick of incompetency over there.

I'll drink to that -- former MVN Rangers writer here.

We went independent a little over a month ago and haven't looked back.

Welcome Joe,

Trans will learn you the ways of gay witchcraft.

RobG will show you how to handle Chad

AZ Phil will show you all the good Chinese restaurants. (Hi Calos!)

Welcome, Joe. And a very, very good addition, TCR!

Rob is the Aslan of the Cub blogging world, building an army to re-take what is rightfully his. He already had his centaur in AZ Phil and his beaver in Transmission. (something like that, the analogy breaks down because I can't think of a Tumnus.)

Sometimes, pretty much all the time, I get the impression TCR is to MLB blogging as Big Bang Theory is to situation comedies.

did anyone get this analogy? If so, please explain it to me....

I thought that was the point -- TCR has nothing to do with baseball. Maybe not.

It's my favorite Sit Com so, maybe that's the analogy.

I will be happy to welcome Joe after he passes his 'meatspin' initiation.

Ugh. If you recall, VFTB was a PG-rated site. Let's not try to induce vomiting on Joe's part on his first day here.

His VFTB readers are in for a surprise.

Yes they are.

No good can come of this.

Hey Joe-

Where you goin' with that gun in your hand?

Gonna shoot ol' Jim Hendry down.

Heard he dealing with another GM.

You shall go by "Other Joe" from now on. I hope that is cool.

[EDIT] Sorry Andrew, didn't read your post. Maybe one of us will have to change their name. Hmm, I'll have to compile a list of possibilities.

I think the part about Furcal signing is still up in the air, but if he does go to the Braves, they plan to move Kelly Johnson to LF, not trade him or Escobar as has been speculated upon.

That's yesterday's news and I already commented on the stupidity of it (filling your left field slot with an aging 96 OPS+ shortstop for $10 million).

Rosenthal says that Furcal signed with the Dodgers, saving the Braves from themselves and my FA Frenzy ballot with one fell swoop of the pen.

No worries, The Joe (see that just sounds weird - things have been complicated).

I'm sick as well and was thinking back on past additions to the TCR writers cabal. Who was that guy that came on with another writer at the same time, and then never contributed or visited the site once? A few months later, he was booted. Anyone remember that?

I think there were 2 such instances if I recall...

when bought out Ruz and, you guys got stuck with me and there was another writer there named George Kryoudis (sp?) that came with...he maybe posted 1 or 2 articles.

then when disappeared and we all moved to, or what I like to refer to as the Dark Times, they once again threw the current Cubs writer at mostvaluablenetwork into the mix, Graham something or other...I don't believe he ever wrote an article.

Thanks Rob. I was thinking of Graham but I remember George as well. Losers.

Baseball-Reference coming this spring...

stats will be sortable on the player pages which is nifty....

one more thing's the TCR pink backpack.

Team orthopods just don't look good in pink.

Carlos will let you know what cyber goodies can be carried in it. Last time I looked I think Johan's Mom was inside.

Sounds like two cases of walking pneumonia.

or the boogie woogie flu

I think it may be Gathright fever.

That's it!

Sing that to the tune of "Cat Scratch Fever"

Gathright fever (from Wikipedia, soon to be a Wiklifield entry):

Viral illness producing strong urge to jump over a car, in Cub fans though when they get this illness, they can't jump high enough and get run over.

ok, i'm just going to say it...

is there really a TCR run "Wikifield"?

If so, Cubbery and Chadball better have entries or I will...

meh, the signature says it all.

is there really a TCR run "Wikifield"?

yes, in development, hope to have it open to the public by the beginning of the year

If so, Cubbery and Chadball better have entries or I will...

anyone will be able to add to it, technically you can now, but I would prefer people to hold off until I finish up a few things.

i give you until I get back from vacation

It's already up on Google and Yahoo searches.

I know, which is weird...must be indexing

there's already a few very useful pages, many more to come.

  • BLOCK: Of course any advantage is an advantage. An MLB, NBA, or NHL team getting the extra game at home in a seven game series is an advantage, I just don't think it is enough of an advantage for winning a division and/or having the best record in a conference or league over the course of an 82-game season (NBA and NHL) or 162 game series (MLB).

  • TEX takes the opening game from TOR (@TOR) 5-3.

TOR lost bautista + donaldson in-game due to injuries...TEX lost beltre...dunno if any will be lingering issues leading to missed games.

  • Ride the Kid Magic! Schwarber hadn't homered in a long time before last night.

  • Greg Maddux was 8-18 in his rookie season. Kyle has the 8 wins down pat.

    Think Baby Maddux.

Prof. Harold Hill's THINK system at work.

Kyle is on the far left.

  • I support this. Hendricks has not only looked better lately but seems to start struggling after a few innings which is better than the 1st in the playoffs.

  • Just tweeted via Jesse Rogers: Hendricks starting Game 2. Wow. Just wow.

  • That was good!

  • Well said. On one hand, I thought the HBP was a bad baseball play -- down 4 runs, put a runner on for a red-hot Fowler. On the other hand, they needed to do something -- I hadn't thought about the warning/pitching inside point. Is Hurdle that smart? He does not strike me that way. By the way -- not clear which fan base you are referring to in your "first" 3rd point.

  • My unsolicited opinions on topics covered in this thread:
    1. I hate the fact that after 162 games, a team could be out after 1 game. However, I think the system is pretty close to perfect right now. 2 of 3 isn't feasible unless they shorten the regular season, and it ices the division winners for way too long. This creates excitement, and rewards the division winners.

  • Personally, I think the game could have had a very different look had the Pirates held onto the ball and tagged Fowler out on the steal in the first. Cole was clearly frazzled, but if they took that runner off the base, it could have relaxed him a lot.

  • Football games are played once a week. There are 16 games a year. I'm not even remotely following at all how you can compare the two leagues and playoff systems. It is physically impossible to play a home and away series. The idea of not having any road games in baseball playoffs is certainly a head scratcher.

How is not having the first and last game at home a benefit for the division winners and team with the best record? How is it not an incentive to win the division when a WC team has to blow their top pitcher?

    Call me lost.

  • Two 97+ win teams in a do-or-die, great bullpens, overpowering starters, plenty of pop--hard to believe that game wouldn't be tense. A 4-0 lead is not a blowout, especially in that situation and with the Cubs' young bullpen. Not only would a defensive play here or there make a difference, but you get the win there also on the home plate umps strike zone (generous strike calls for Arrieta, including a couple Ks), and on Schwarber sitting on the right pitch at the right time.

  • Unbeleivable Dodgers:
I just noticed the Dodger's payroll today. It is just absurd. $300,000,000+!!
Here is where just some of their money is for 2015:

    Some "Highlights"
    Carl Crawford $20MM
    Brandon McCarthy $17MM
    Bronson Arroyo $3.5MM
    Darwin B $2.2MM
    Dan Haren $10MM
    Matt Kemp $18MM
    Brian Wilson $10MM
    Ryan Webb $2.2MM
    Dee Gordon $2.5MM

  • So I think tomorrow will be the most important test of how far we can go. We can win it all with two pitchers since Arietta has shown he can carry over his success to the post season. If Lester can be dominant also then I think we can go far no matter how Hendricks or Hammel do.

And in terms of pitching just went through to see how we could maximize Lester and Arietta and came up with this (Lester would be going on 4 days rest three times and Arietta twice):

  • i still can't believe that crawford contract (7/142). all that loot and years for a LF'r who's entire hitting game revolves around his legs and line-drive power. those triples that raised his value are deceptive as hell to his true power, but it helped him get paid.

there's also pause about a guy who's ob% is almost totally driven by hits rather than walks. BOS got lucky unloading that crap deal.

  • I think the Cubs take Berry and Soler off playoff roster and add Hammel & Ramirez. Believe Maddon will find Denorfia & Jackson defense too hard to lose.
