Free Agent Frenzy Update and More...

I always had this idea about the phrase "and more". When I first started out here in Los Angeles, I was editing commercials for musical artists, not really my thing, I'm more a movie guy, and it didn't help that about 99% of the artists were trash and the music industry is darker than a snuff film.

So we did a lot of compilation albums, soundtracks for stuff like "The Matrix" or all the Grammy artists, etc, stuff you're sure to have seen at some point. And all these albums would list like four to eight of the more popular artists or songs , something like (in your best Don LaFontaine voice) - Marilyn Manson, Deftones, Rob Zombie, Rage Against the Machine, And More!- acknowledging the bands whose agents weren't as good to get them advertised, but at least they made the album. So the sort of inside joke I always had with my bosses at the time was that if I were to ever start a band, I would call it "And More".

Think about it, you'd be listed on nearly every music soundtrack or compilation CD commercial ever done. Do a little viral Internet video and instant buzz for your group.
So to the would-be rock stars in our readership looking for a band name, you're welcome, let me know how it goes. And if you don't like "And More", I recommend "Skull-Fuck Cedeno", "Gay Witchcraft", "Bees" or "Johann's Mom".

FA Frenzy update "and more" after the jump...

The lead tightens ever so slightly and if Manny Ramirez goes to the Dodgers. the contest gets quite interesting.

  2. CincyKid - 56
  3. Jackie t, Andrew, Dejon R. - 53
  4. Everyone Else

As for the and more, "Crunch" passes along this Cub-related comic strip, good for a mild chuckle. The strip is called "Get Fuzzy" and is written by a Red Sox fan.

I didn't know you were involved in film. I wrote about half of a screenplay adaptation of Kafka's "The Castle"...that's ok, he wrote half of a book (damn, I'm funny). Think you can get that made for me?

...also, I wanted to start a band called Empathetic Schadenfreude, because it's super pretentious, but I don't play an instrument and I can't sing for shit.

I've got a sister on her way to LA with credits as an Associate Producer, Producer, and Post-Prodcution Coordinator (I think that's right) in TV and Film. She's looking for work. She's been working in Philadelphia (and traveling for shoots) for two years or so.

Random outburst of the day. I guess I was directing this toward Rob, not The Joe (she can't help you get your screenplay produced). LA themed thread within this post.

Also, The Joe, pretentious bands are the best sort of bands for guys who can't play an instrument or sing for shit, so I don't see what's standing in your way.

Thanks for the encouragement! I think I'll do it.

the casting couch is the best way to go...I kid.

I've had a hard enough time finding my own work, so I've never been much good to anyone else. The trade papers, craigslist, knowng people are pretty much the best bets to finding work. Not being an idiot helps a lot, she'll be ahead of 90% of this town if she isn't.

note: Get Fuzzy doesn't revolve around the RSox, but the writer/artist of the comic is a RSox/baseball fan and it works it's way into the comic a bit.

my bad...I cleaned up that sentence.

Gay Witchcraft sounds like a quality name for a Glam Rock sextet.

Is that Hank White in the middle?

Expect him to hit .380 next year with 8 homeruns.

so maybe that would improve his periodic bouts of wildness?

Does he have a sleeveless leather jacket like Rick Vaughn, too?

I don't think there's an animal big enough to make one Z's size.

Hmmm, Cubness? I'm sueing. That is a terrible rip-off of my word.

I'm partial to the yet-untapped band name Polizia con Vongole.

btw I'm heading to the Mall for Inauguration on Tuesday; anyone else? DC Tom, where are you?

i think "3/44" would make an excellent name for a band. "Chad's Bitch" would be a close 2nd.

Russ Springer let go by the Cardinals. Wish we could dump the awful Vizcaino somehow and replace him with Springer, who is a very nice middle reliever with awesome numbers against RH batters.

Fox's update on Cubs Convention Friday:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9033268/Piniell...

OK, I'll admit it. I don't understand the last bubble in the comic. Maybe there should be a 'correct the punchline contest'. I'll start it off with "And that's different how?!?"

I'm only first place in that contest until Manny signs, but still it's better than usual when I'm eliminated by Dec 01.

Gordon Wittenmyer/Sun-Times stuff:

• • Sources say out-of-options outfielder Felix Pie could be traded as soon as sometime next week, with pitcher Rich Hill -- also facing the same roster limbo -- possibly next to go.

• • Cedeno, too, is out of options, and could be on the block if the Cubs determine he won't beat out Micah Hoffpauir for a roster spot or if they acquire another veteran infielder such as Rich Aurilia.

The Cubs, by the way, are not strongly pursuing Aurilia, according to insiders, despite some recent reports suggesting otherwise. He's a back-burner option at this point.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/13830...

He should be taken off the back burner, poored into the sink and the ground up in the garbage disposal.

Well not him, really, just the idea of him on the 2009 Cubs.

I'm sure I'm in the minority in my opinion but I feel strongly that Fukodome should play center and lead off. I think that with the power expectations taken off him, he'll be a valuable on base + speed guy. I think he'll have a good year.

My lineup would be this:

Fukodome
Theriot
Bradley
Ramirez
Soriano
Lee
Soto
Fontentot

Would love to see other guys proposed lineups...

Ideal or within the realm of possibility? Cause it looks like Soriano is batting leadoff unless the Cubs trade for Roberts.

I do not agree with the "speed" assertion anymore. He stole 12 bases last year. Fonzi stole 19 in less games.

I just was checking out Aaron Miles stats. His career OBP from the 1-slot is mediocre. Statistically, he's done better 2nd, and 7th, respectively. However, I did like looking at his "clutch stats", which I would think are better than average, as well as his OBP in a 3-2 count (over .550), and even 1-2. It would appear as if he has a clue where the zone is, where some players who have led off for the team (not mentioning any names, Soriano) are challenged here.

Take it for what its worth but Tony LaRussa really likes Miles and was kinda pissed they didnt resign him.

LaRussa called him the best teammate he's ever had.....which I guess means he is a real team player.
Converse to Miles, aren't Soriano's best career numbers out of the leadoff spot? I really believe Lou when he says he is comfortable batting him there, and am convinced, especially with this roster, that that is precisely where he will bat.

the best power hitter will once again probably lead off, yes...

i could really care less the guy can steal 20-30 bases at this point in his career, honestly.

i'm a little tired of seeing a guy who hits as many homers/doubles as he does struggling to touch 90 RBIs. he had a hell of a nice advantage with near-.300 hitting 7/8 hitters last season at least.

"Sweet Lou said he talked to Jim Hendry about the situation and mentioned Aaron Miles' success in the leadoff spot for the Cardinals and his OBP. He said they would go to camp and figure it out. But Piniella indicated Alfonso Soriano is getting older and could possibly be moved down in the order. While Piniella did not say, it was implied that Soriano would be willing to move down in the lineup. Piniella added Soriano will do what's best for the Cubs."

http://chicagocubsonline.com/archives/2009/01/09cu...

Soriano moved down in the order makes sense. Miles batting leadoff instead of Soriano, Fontenot, Theriot, Fukudome, or Reed Johnson does not make sense.

Miles taking playing time from Theriot or Fontenot also makes little sense at this point, unless Miles somehow continues his high OBP--which is possible, but not what his career numbers suggest he'll do.

miles in the leadoff spot? ugg...

as much as theriot is a "meh" hitter, i'd take him in the 1 slot over miles easily.

that said, im pretty much expecting soriano to lead off though i'd like him moved down.

I misstated when I said "high OBP". What I should have said was "adequate" since I was remarking on the possibility of Miles duplicating his .355 OBP from 2008, a mark he'd never reached in the majors before. The suggestion of Miles winning a starting job, much less the leadoff spot, is a little bit frightening.

From reading the Cardinals blogs, Miles has this annoying habit of subtly taking jobs away from underperforming starting players. Then when the season is over everyone shits bricks at how many plate appearances he got.

Phils buy out Hamels' arb years on the cheap.

CRANE KENNEY says no way the 2007 Cubs would have won the division with DUSTY BAKER managing!

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2009/01/17/sports/B...

suits say lots of things...that's why the players are more important.

Geo might have had less ABs than he did, but I don't know what else Dusty might've done any different than Lou did. Bluntly it's not as if the 2007 Cubs did anything worth remembering anyways. They won a weak division with 85 Ws and got swept in the first round. So is Lou supposed to be some genius?

This is not even from a Dusty fan or even apologist. I wish Crane Kenney would shut up.

it's all theory, but I assume Crane is referring to the turnaround from the first 2 months, getting rid of Barrett, best team in baseball since june, etc...

hardly a genius, well except when compared to Dusty

it's just so stupid to begin with it should just start/end there.

the idea that some dude just willed a team to winning and no one else could have done it but that one guy...okay, whatever. go team go. i could care less if the manager was casey stengel or ted turner, no man has that much power over his team's performance...

meh. suit talk...

lou is gonna play fontenot as much as possible whenever possible
fontenot 350 at bats i say 14 hr out of the 2 or 7 hole

That'd be great. I would've guessed 14 hr in about 450 ABs, if he got that many. But I think Fontenot should be the starter at 2nd, and Miles should play there against lefties (if he hits). 2nd and 7th sound like the right places to bat Fontenot most days. I would guess that Fukudome, Theriot, Bako, and Miles gather the most ABs batting 8th this year. I would guess Fontenot bats 2nd more than anyone else with Theriot, Miles, or Johnson there against lefties.

i go back to last week or week before cubs like to sign injured
pitchers to incentive contracts i stated the cubs should sign
m. mulder to incentive laden contract as per buster olney (espn)
today mark mulder could be the hidden gem of this years free agent class.

he will throw in 2 weeks for teams.

hmmmmmm

Dude. No one can understand what you're saying. You realize this, no? Use punctuation and standard prose formatting and what "you stated" might be taken more seriously.

I disagree, respectfully. rokfish is TCR's ee cummings.

I disagree that's he's ee cummings, but I don't have any difficulty understanding his pseudoprose.

Don't knock Kenney - his holy blessing escapade was true genius - and also the sign of an extraordinarily weak mind.

  • First time I saw Herrera was yesterday. He took like 100 pitches, fouled off a ton off Lester.

Very nice young player and perfect leadoff guy.

  • Obviously not Phil. But he mentioned this on Wednesday.

"Dominican Summer League (DSL) Opening Day is Saturday June 4th, so probably about 8-10 pitchers and position players presently at EXST in Mesa will be sent to the Cubs Dominican Academy (probably sometime this week) and be assigned to either DSL Cubs #1 or DSL Cubs #2."

  • Per FanGraphs, Cubs have a 72.5% chance of winning today. Jinx! Next highest percentage on today's games is D-backs with a 64.7% chance (Greinke vs. Cesar Vargas, in Arizona.)

  • Phil, when will the Cubs start moving international players from EST to the Dominican for the start of the DSL season?

diamondjaxx 2 hours 1 min ago view
  • It was a nice barehand pick-up but he was close enough to 1st where he could underhand the ball to Bryant. The trouble he's had has been with the overhand throw. He's definitely working on it, but I don't know if that play was a good example of progress made.

  • Phil, have you heard anything about the condition of Oscar De La Cruz's elbow? Has there been talk of a time table? Is he throwing?

K Dub 11 hours 2 min ago view
  • i was distracted for most of the game and also missed the first few innings.

but yeah, any time he makes a good fielding+throwing play on D it's worthy of praise and a trip to pizza hut for a personal pan pizza and $1 worth of songs on the juke box.

    seriously, i'll take it.

  • I was there. From what I saw it was upper third of the scoreboard

The E-Man 18 hours 14 min ago view
  • No I have been thinking actually that he seems to lead the Cubs with balls called strikes all year. He really shouldn't be expanding his zone to swing at many of those either because it wouldn't lead to anything good. He's seeing the ball well though so hopefully it'll even out.
