Gameday Open Thread/A's @ Cubs

As a service to our readers, I will avoid the obligatory double Sean puns for today's starters - Marshall vs. Gallagher. Here's the lineup from Muskat:

LF Alfonso Soriano, SS Ryan Theriot, 3B Aramis Ramirez, 1B Jake Fox, RF
Richie Robnett, CF Reed Johnson, C Paul Bako, 2B Andres Blanco, P Sean
Marshall.

You can listen to this one on the radio if you have the means.

Where's Milton Bradley?

DHing tomorrow, suppose to play the field on Friday.

Someone needs to sit Hendry down and explain to him that we don't need DH's in the National League.

It's really hard for some of us to even care that MB is on the Cubs, much less be excited about it. We had a left handed hitting RF back in 2005 who scored 84 runs, drove in 87, and hit 24 HRs. We were so impressed with him we didn't bother to bring him back in 2006. But, correct me if I'm wrong, all three of those stats would be career highs for Milton Bradley.

And then Burnitz went on to tear it up in 2006 to the tune of .230/.289/.422 with 16 HRs, 49 RBI and 35 runs.

I know it's too late at this point. However count me in the camp that thinks it might be a good idea to trade for Nick Swisher right now while the Yanks have visions of Manny.

Maybe a Kevin Gregg for Nick Swisher swap could be mutually beneficial?

Kevin Gregg is no Kerry, but we still need him out there

I already feel our bullpen is suspect

I doubt the Yanks would accept a Swisher-for-Gregg trade straight up, but yes, I like Swisher on the team very much.

I'll probably get blasted by the batting average-obsessed crowd, but o well, I don't really give a shyte about batting average.

I'd do Reed Johnson and Kevin Gregg for Swisher. Then we can let Kfuk and Swisher compete for the Cf job.

Then the loser can start the other 90 games that Milton Bradley misses!

(ducks down and crawles out the door)

manny will sign with LA...

...as soon as ST is closer to done.

as far as manny being manny goes he knows he'll get his loot...he also knows he's not up at 7am to go play stretch and run while it's settling out.

Where's Waldo?

He's in there!

argh, this lineup...

Today's game is not on the radio.

It is if you have MLB.com's Gameday Audio. I think that's what Rob meant.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mediacenter/#20090303

You're right. I turned on WGN, and said out loud, "What the fuck Rob?" :)

Soriano goes yard on Gallagher. 1-0 after 1.

IMO Bradley should be benched until he's fit to play baseball. Getting a quad injury on the first day of Spring Training? C'mon, the guy's not in shape, let him work out until his body is ready to go.

Marshal, 3IP, 1K, 0s everywhere else.

Fox unloaded on one, now 3-0

A-Ram goes yard. 6-0

Aramis just hit a 3 run homer. Bottom of the 4th
6-0 Cubs

ah, I see above that this game is being well-covered by TCR readers.

3-R HR by Aramis Ramirez off Blevins, scored 2 the previous inning as well...

6-0 now, bottom of the 4th

Fox could be the DH for our AL games?

Stanton takes the mound for Cubs

By the way, 3-run HR by Aramis.

I sent you a trade proposal.

Is that allowed? I might do that if it is.

not until after the draft

On a side note: Is anyone a bit worried that this massive push for DH'ing in spring training might lead to the DH being implemented in the NL? I know pitchers aren't going to hit well, but weren't the Cubs all about giving their pitchers plenty of ABs last spring? Weren't the Cubs all talking about making sure that the pitchers were ready to hit at the beginning of last season? Why the change this year?

"Why the change this year?"

Extra long spring training and some competition for the final roster spots.

BTW - 3-run HR by A-Ram 6-0 Cubs

Someone give me a scoring rundown.

Any Homers yet?

3-Run HR by Scott Eyre off of Jason Schmidt. A-Ram is broke.

That was clever. I like it.

1ST!

Thanks. I like to contribute useful information to TCR. That's what I'm here for.

Stanton is blowing chunks. This is our lefty "backup"?

And now 2-run single w/bases juiced.

6-2

Good luck Stanton...

When's the first round of cuts?

Randy Bush on the radio...says Cubs will probably play Team Japan on March 11th, could be another team in the Asia bracket of WBC though.

Theriot with a bare-handed grab and throw to get Giambi, high hop off the mound and some top spin to make the play...

somebody asked about the CBOE auction the other day

the latest--> http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090303&c...

Picked up my copy of MLB 2K9 this morning. I think it's got some potential to be a fantastic game, but I've got to work with the AI sliders a little bit first.

The pitching mechanic in itself is fantastic from a realism standpoint, I think. One of the best ever. The lone problem is that the computer swings at everything in the strike zone. Z threw a 48 pitch complete game this morning against the Cardinals. If I get that tweaked a little bit, I think I'll have a fantastic game here. Hitting is nice and difficult, although I hit too many homers when I make contact.

Franchise mode appears very deep, able to access all the way down to single A. I'll have more when I play it some more.

Cashner in...

as are Castillo, Rivas and Barney...

goes full on the first batter and gets a pop out to 2b

gives up a double to the 2nd batter...

2nd/3rd...1 out

wild pitch...run scores.

aaron cunningham single on a misplay...6-4.

Cashner out...Cotts in.

Safe to say Cashman or Stanton will not be with the team this year.

Nor Ronnie Cedeno,Felix Pie or Rich Hill

Single or error. 6-4 now.

Still only one out.

Goodbye Cashman.

Cashner. Cashman's the dude who's regretting ARod's contract about now.

Donaldson in to pinch-hit for A's...

Who made the mis-play ROB G?

I didn't hear.

Cubs win! Put up the W flag!

OK, it's only March, but a W always makes me happy.

was wondering when the first "panic and cut" thread would pop up during spring games.

i think we got it here.

30+ days of armchair manager to go...

Aramis 3 run BOMB, up 6-0...

  • Ahhh...sad. Lke a few of you here, I saw him play during the '69-'71 seasons. He was the "hot Zobrist" for the club in August/September of '69 while everyone else was fizzling out...

  • I predict: "They will play hard and if they give the same effort every day, they'll win a lot of games."

  • OK, boys -- find a way to win today.

  • There's some BA is missing too, here's all signing bonus BA doesn't have some:

    -6 Hockin $241,000 (slot price), 7 Cruz $75,000 (saved $110,00), 8 Ridlings $120,000 (saved $53,800), 9 Robinson $30,000 (saved $132,300), so far the Cubs have saved an extra $297,100

  • Also -- despite losing 6 of their last 10, the Cubs picked up a game on both STL and PIT during that period. Weird, given that they swept PIT and were swept by STL.

  • Also, I'd like to know if there are numbers to back up my suspicion that there are a lot more fast starts than late June romps. This seems like a time where everybody not named Willson Contreras is looking a little tired and/or banged up a bit.

For once, the Cubs got off to a fast start. Seems like I've been waiting for that for 50 years.Everybody is really gunning for this team, too. It's their playoffs.

  • Yep...sort of. Matheny says Rosenthal will no longer pitch the 9th, and they will mix/match Oh, Siegrist and Broxton.

  • Duane Underwood now 0-5 with a 5.44 ERA for Tenn. Urp. Warren not sharp at Iowa tonight. When will Cease and Hudson be ready?

On a positive note, Jiminez with his 10th HR tonight. He has a .924 OPS -- the only player in the league with an OPS over .900. Leads the lead in 2B, SLG and OPS, tied for the league lead in HR and 3rd in Avg. Nice!

  • - The pressure of going for the regular-season wins record is now gone.
    - Joe will come up with more wacky dress-up ideas for the team to wear after they lose their next get-away game.
    - There is more clarity on Spencer Patton.
    - We play the Reds next. They aren't very good.
    - We'll have at least a 9 game lead after today.
EDIT: - Contreras looks like the real deal.

Other than that, not much -- nasty stretch. Two ugly losses in the last 4 games.
Ugh -- give Lackey a 4-1 lead, you hope for better.
