Unless Jake Peavy can drive in some serious runs, I don't think he'll be a huge help to the Cubs.

Sounds like the deal is done, waiting for Peavy to waive NTC. I'm not too heartbroken, although the Cubs rotation with Peavy would have been ridiculous good.

Can't imagine Peavy waving ntc to go to Sox where the ball flies out easier then Wrigley and to team that will not be able to build around him because they are slashing pay roll.
That said as long as he does not end up on the Brewers..

So why didn't they just keep Javier? They already had him and he was roughly as good as Peavy. Did Javier cost a lot more?

I think he was making $ 10 million.
Was inconsistent, especially in "big games" which put him in Ozzie's dog house.

Peavy may not end up with the Brewers, but Derosa might. The Brewers need a second basemen and Cleveland is apparently fielding offers for him.
I'd like to see the Cubs trade Jake Fox and/or Aaron Miles to Cleveland for Derosa. I know there are money/contract issues, but Hendry can figure it out.

i'd really like to see fontenot moved back to 2nd.
no, i don't think him playing 3rd is causing his bat to slump or blah blah blah...however, i do think he's an adequate 2nd baseman who plays an inadequate 3rd base.
miles/scales/freel/fontenot pretty much have to play 2nd or 3rd...scales isn't very good anywhere and freel wasn't much of a 2nd baseman even in his "prime." miles plays a better 3rd, imo. miles is the most fluid at 2nd, but i'd still rather have fontenot at 2nd when they both play.
and yes, i still like fontenot's bat and think he can pull full time duty in the bigs.

Ok. I'm not saying the Cubs' system is teeming with prospects...far from it.
But who are the Sox supposed to be trading for Peavy? Besides Beckham?

clayton richard's name is being thrown around in rumors. he's one of those OMFG LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS guys, but he's pretty much a boring throwing lefty who leaves a lot of fat pitches in the zone.

Olney said on ESPN News today that names being "bandied" about are Poreda, Beckham and Richard. Also suspects that he would force the Sox to pick up that $22 million option in 2013 (2014?).
Well, if he goes at least the Cubs don't face him Friday.

clayton richard is the wsox "new lance broadway"...
people look at his numbers recently and his IP/HR totals in the minors and wet themselves.
if they'd look closer they'd find out he's feasting pretty much solely on a nice sinker coming from a tall lefty. they'd also see him leaving more than a few "mistakes" over the plate that minor league kids just aren't seeing well, but a major league hitter can kill. his sinker just isn't THAT deceptive, though it's a good one.

And if that has to be run by Reinsdorf I'm willing to bet no deal.
Re: Is Jake Peavy Chicago-bound, But to the Other Side of ...

Gammons says it's a 4 for 1 deal, and will NOT include Beckham. Williams spoke with Scott Linebrink about Peavy last night and got glowing reviews. The deal supposedly is waiting only on Peavy now, which I would guess means the contract situation is ironed out, one way or the other. I agree though, that many years is completely anomalous to Reinsdorf, much less the dollar figure.

What does that even mean? Of course this team needs starting pitching; if the offense is going to continue to be inconsistent, the starting pitching becomes even more important.
Re: Is Jake Peavy Chicago-bound, But to the Other Side of ...
on Thu, 05/21/2009 - 10:41am Permalink
It doesn't matter how good your starting pitching is, if you score 0 or 1 run in a game you aren't going to win very many.
Re: Is Jake Peavy Chicago-bound, But to the Other Side of ...
on Thu, 05/21/2009 - 10:46am Permalink
Seems to me if you give up 6 runs a game, you have an even smaller chance of winning. At least with good starting pitching, you can shut the other team down and sneak out a few 1-0, 2-1 wins.

Hasn't seemed to work well the past couple days.
Cubs rankings:
Starting pitching - 4th in NL
Relief Pitching - 15th in NL
Hitting - 10th in the NL
Thus why we need relief help and a bat.

Could the Cubs use Peavy? Heck yeah, he'd strengthen the bullpen just by pushing Marshall there. But I think Manny and others are trying to say it's not the biggest need they have, not that the Cubs don't need (or want) Peavy.

He took the two homers(I saw)last week to left field. For a lefthander to play at Wrigley that would be awesome, just look what it did for Edmonds last year.
Gonzalez would hit 50 a year if he played for Cubs.

Lee has been squaring up on the ball pretty well. He hasn't 'crushed' anything in three years now. If Piniella would grow a pair, they would be in at least a 50-50 platoon.

Given the remarkable affection that Cub fans have for many veteran Cubs, and how much they hate to see them traded, it's not surprising . . . that the Cubs haven't been to a world series in over sixty years.
Wait, that wasn't what I meant to say.
Given the remarkable affection that Cub fans have for many veteran Cubs, and how much they hate to see them traded, it's not surprising that Hendry didn't trade Derrek Lee last winter or the winter before.
But Lee is not only keeping Hoffpauir on the bench, he's keeping Jake Fox in Iowa.
One little cherry-picked data point.
The Cubs are trying to score a few runs on the road this week.
In away games this year, Lee has no home runs and two doubles.
Thirteen of Fox's seventeen homers have come on the road. He also has ten doubles and a triple away from home.

Well, fuck.
It figures Kenny Williams would pull something like this off. I still think Peavy would have been sweet to have, and I still think a true ace like Halladay would both stud-ify the rotation and shore up the pen a bit, but I agree that our needs now are relief pitching and a bat (or better production from the bats we have). The same fucking needs we have every year.
At least it's not the Brewers or the Cardinals.

... trading Peavy and keeping Gonzalez is like "splitting the baby", that they might not win 170 games over the life of the Peavy contract without him. Not that they are in a good position to do so, but if Peavy left, I'd love for the Cubs to go balls out after Gonzalez.

You know, in my opinion, it's really rude for the Sox & Padres organizations to make this thing so public. Now everyone is waiting on Peavy and everyone knows if the deal doesn't go through it will be his "fault". It's not very professional, imo.

I think I agree with you on that. And the more we hear about Peavy I can't help but think he's baseball's Brett Favre. He doesn't know what he wants to do, but he wants to keep every option open for the future. Screw him.
Re: Is Jake Peavy Chicago-bound, But to the Other Side of ...

Uh, no. Baseball's version of Favre was Roger Clemens, holding the entire MLB hostage over whether he'd decide to sign with someone in, you know, June or July. Thank God that's over with.
Peavy signed a contract that he shouldn't have two years ago with assurances from the Padres' higher ups that they were going to be competitive. Instead, they decided to rebuild and he's been pretty calm and collected throughout despite being in an obviously bad situation. The whole Cubs fiasco in the offseason wasn't his fault, in my eyes -- he didn't break the story and I think he reacted genuinely when he thought a deal was in place.
And it Zell/Kenney or Towers who killed the deal, not Peavy.
