Jeff Baker gets an odd start in right field against the lefty Jamie Moyer. No word yet if Xavier Nady is injured or Lou just wanted to get Baker a start, albeit it with the current 5 outfielders already fighting for at-bats, worrying about Jeff Baker getting his hacks would be the least of my worries. For what it's worth, which is absolutely nothing, Baker is 2/7 against Moyer including 1/3 with a double last year.

Jeff Stevens has been called up and will take the bullpen spot of Esmailin Caridad who is back to the disabled list with a right elbow strain. Sean Marshall will get the bulk of the 8th-inning set-up duty until Lou and Larry change their mind again. Marshall's new job probably won't start until tomorrow though as Marshall has pitched three days in a row.

The Phillies are tops in the league in runs scored and tops in the league in OPS against lefties at .846. Good luck to you, Sloth (hat tip to Jacos for the find).

Interesting statistical note on tonight's game: Philly starter Jamie Moyer is older than the entire Cubs starting lineup combined...and multiplied by 6! There has to be a backstory regarding the Baker start, doesn't there? As Rob said, it's not like Baker has some incredible history against Moyer.

As Rob said, it's not like Baker has some incredible history against Moyer. ==================================== CUBNUT: Maybe Lou wants to see if Jeff Baker can handle RF, and if he shows that he can, the Cubs might release Xavier Nady and bring up Chad Tracy. By releasing Nady, the Cubs would not be on the hook for his $2M in potential performance/incentive bonuses, and they could at least salvage about $300K in salary once Nady signs with another club. Or it's possible that Nady has already agreed to waive his automatic "No trade" (it expires June 15th anyway), and the Cubs might believe they can trade him somewhere where he can play 1B or DH (at least in a platoon), especially if the Cubs eat some of his salary. BTW, if Nady is willing to waive his "no trade" and the Cubs did trade him, prior to June 15th, they would only be able to take back player contracts or cash not in excess of $50,000 aggregate.

btw, i know trades only happen after exhaustive scouting, but still - does it make any sense for the cub brass to basically be telling the world that zombie ain't what he used to be?

Boy, the Cubs defense must have read about the bad BABIP that Gorzelanny's been treated to and are trying to correct things tonight. Three really nice plays so far.

he'll pitch a simulated game on Monday, 60-70 pitches

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.
