Z will be in, Cashner will be up, plus Cardinals vs. Cubs

The long-awaited announcements have been announced:

Carlos Zambrano will make his return to the starting rotation on Wednesday in Pittsburgh and Tom Gorzelanny be moved from the rotation to the bullpen, where he will joined by a new teammate...

Andrew Casher, who will be summoned from Iowa on Monday, according to Carrie Muskat. Cashner has given up four hits and a run in two innings pitched since the I-Cubs moved him into the pen. Overall, his numbers at Triple-A this year have been stunning. 0.86 ERA and 17/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 17 IP.

No word on what this means for the immediate future of James Russell or John Grabow. Gorzelanny, we know, was unequivocal about how much he did not want to be moved out of the rotation.

Here are the lineups for Sunday, the capper on a six-game homestand. Despite a couple of clunkers in this stretch, including Friday, a victory today would leave the Cubs with a 4-2 record and just three back of St. Louis.

Cardinals vs. Dempster (3-4, 3.31; 5-5, 4.19 all-time vs. StL)
Schumaker 4, Ludwick 9, Pujols 3, Holliday 7, Freese 5, Rasmus 8, Molina 2, Ryan 6, Wainwright 1

Cubs vs. Wainwright (6-3, 2.38; 4-3, 4.38 all-time vs. Cubs)
Fukudome 9, Theriot 4, Lee 3, Ramirez 5, Byrd 8, Soriano 7, Soto 2, Castro 6, Dempster 1

The Cubs have to be looking to trade a starter. I'm just not sure what specifically they'd be looking to pick up in return. It's not like they can go looking for an Aramis Ramirez, which is what they need the most right now. The bullpen seems to have improved a lot lately. Can we DL Grabow? Please? Russell has done nothing to deserve a demotion.

Lou's (what the hell is he thinking?) top of the order. Lines for the last 28 days Fukeme .254 .351 .365 .716 theRot .207 .223 .217 .441 GDPLee .264 .356 .407 .762 MisRam .177 .257 .274 .531 Is it any wonder the Cubs are 10th/16 in runs scored... Theriot has gone 21 games without an extra base hit. In case you're wondering I'm told that's only been done by a starting player 7 times since 1920.

Does Colvin get this playing time that Lou says he's earned by performing so well in such limited playing time in September or in Iowa? Maybe Lou meant that Colvin had earned himself extra batting practice, or extra time on the team Wii, or extra time to play with himself on the bench. Surely I misunderstood.

In reply to by crunch

I'm not interested in seeing Colvin develop as a bench player, so I'd much rather see him get to start at least 4 times a week in either Chicago or Iowa. Chad Tracy is still raking in Iowa, and despite his slow start, I'd rather have him as a bench player if it means getting Colvin regular playing time. I'd be looking to deal a starting pitcher and an outfielder if I were Hendry right now. I think the outfielders would be much harder to trade, of course. I keep thinking the Cubs are farther out of it than they are, though. Is "When Lee and Ramirez start hitting..." going to become the new "When Wood and Prior get are both healthy..."? I just don't see this team going anywhere without Ramirez hitting like himself.

Big Lowitzki: What were you saying about how the Cardinals were only scoring "4.2 runs a game" and weren't doing that well? Do you still feel that way? I noticed you were eerily silent when I asked if you wanted to bet that I believed the Cards would be top 5 in the NL in offense by the end of the year.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
