The Gist: I didn't watch anything of the game, so not much to add. It's disappointing the Cubs couldn't get the win after getting to Yovani Gallardo, but disappointment and the Cubs go together like fire and gasoline. The bullpen blew it's second lead of the season, this time Kerry Wood being the culprit, leaving a fastball over the plate with Soto set up low and inside. Aramis and Byrd had the big days with the bat. Fukudome left after a few innings with a mild hamstring strain and is listed day to day. The Mendoza Line has been activated for Carlos Pena.  I think I've found my new nickname for him.

Byrd and Ramirez had good days at the plate, but Byrd's CS in the 9th hurt. And Ramirez still can't seem to throw the ball. He was saved by Pena at least once and cost the team a DP in the 1st - Fielder should have never even come up that inning.

From the Tribune, maybe Byrd is claiming he got the sign to run: "Marlon Byrd cut short an interview after being asked about trying to steal second base in the ninth inning with no one out and the Cubs trailing by a run..Quade labeled the decision "miscommunication" without specifying what happened, though he conceded he didn't want Byrd to run. "We have to deal with that (Monday)," he said. "Make sure that I didn't screw the damn thing up … and I might have. But I didn't care for that situation to be running." Byrd was reluctant to discuss the attempt, though he denied there was any miscommunication. "I look at the third base coach," he said, referring to Ivan DeJesus. So was he given the steal sign? manny was one of those rare few who could roll out of bed and play pro baseball. roids aside, he coasted a long time in the game on being able to perform awesome while his idea of training was not to become a fatass and to take his work in the batting cage. it's not that i think people were jealous of the guy, but his attitude and his lack of working on being even better sure did rile some. it's hard for some people to watch a guy who's one of the best in the game coast along on those skills when he could actually be so much better if he applied himself. pedro martinez showed you can be a happy-go-lucky guy and apply/work to be better than the already great talent you can coast on.

He's being pushed through the system far faster than his skills development merits. And while that's nothing new for a Hendry organization it reeks of desperation--also not new for the Cubs. 78 games at Daytona, a .257 batting average and an OPS around .700 got Vitters a promotion to AA where he hit .223 .292 .383 .676 blah

Just to put the facts into proper perspective, Vitters was hitting .291 at Daytona last year following a year in which he was named a A - star and named to the AFL All-Prospect team. Had he stayed at Florida all year he would be in... AA Tenessee this year.

Yep. We could have had who you and MIKE C had been pining for, Matt Wieters. He is below the Mendoza line so far this year after shitting his pants last year too. .192BA and OBP of .276. This from a player who one would think got the benefit from college - when Vitters did not. I am still glad Tim Wilken is making the decisions on bringing in youngsters rather than you. Jim Hendry, however, that's another matter...

wieters not finding his power stroke is weirding people out. last year it became concerning and this year it seems baseball pundits have finally soured on his power actually showing up. people expected at least 20+hr out of the guy and he's looking like a low-average 10-15HR guy.

the thing is he got a "pass" for getting on-top of too much stuff and pounding it into the ground for a little too long (even during his minors stint). he has a great swing, yet he's horrible at getting the fat of the bat on the ball. his minor league power is a bit deceptive considering even there he was pounding too much stuff into the ground. people assumed he'd hit for decent average and have some power to add to it. at this point the power is looking unlikely without his eyes/body coming around to what's pitched to him and the hitting-for-average thing was/is less of a slam dunk than anticipated by many.

I finally noticed that Gameday 2011 uses graphics from the home team's park. With all of the bells and whistles for a subscriber ($25/mo., cancelible) it is pretty nice indeed if you've a speedy connection.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

    CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately. 

    You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.  

    Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
