I was looking more into the Vogelbach kid. Perfect Game has him listed as running a 7.15 in the 60. That is moving pretty good for a guy his size. I bet there aren't to many Cubs running that right now. So obvious he has to learn about proper nutrition, but could be a good athlete in a bad body right now. There is also some video of him running out a triple and looks to run pretty fluid. Good candidate for Camp Colvin!

In reply to by Rob G.

As long as Marmol doesn't throw a slider to Theriot, they should be good. I am sure you've got a typo on Dunn's numbers there, Rob... had the Cubs signed him to play at first they would be in contention for a playoff spot. I see the Sux batters are trying to outdo the Cubs starters for the crappiest unit in Chicago. Rios has amazingly done even worse than Dunn and Beckham, Pizeirniski and Pierre are in haling distance.

In reply to by Dr. aaron b

I expect that the Cubs will allow their over priced veterans to go away either by trading them, for whatever they can get, or by letting their contracts run out. Other than Soriano this is basically over after 2012. Thus, I expect the Cubs to continue to pursue short term players like Pena, unless young players that fill a need (for example see Garza and maybe Fielder) become available. Players like Dunn don't fit in this plan.

[ ]

In reply to by Dr. aaron b

Agreed you need a plan, and then you need to follow it so you don't end up with a patchwork mess. The problem is that we are currently fielding an expensive bad team. The first thing we need to do is get rid of the expensive bad players. Sadly that will take time since those same expensive bad players have long term contracts. My main concern is that the Cubs will not follow a plan (or don't have one), but instead will sign players like Dunn in a effort of compete for the wild card.

metioning archer would distract from the point that the cubs sold high on him. he finally had a decent start the last time out at least...nothing special, though. right now TB has a promising years-away SS, some filler, and an interesting brandon guyer situation to show for it. if archer doesn't "get it together" his value is going to be tanked...i don't even know how to handicap it right now, but i'd imagine it's currently not too high. he's added "hitable" to his wildness makeup. btw...too many people, esp. the press, don't realize the cubs got zach rosscup in the trade. he's not archer-level, but he's serviceable and is yet to have a bad minor league season (3rd season in progress). f.perez got all the press in the trade on the cubs side.

^Fukudome leadoff double ^goes to third on a passed ball, nobody out ^dies there ^Campana (the folly of batting him 7th) two out single ^steals second base ^Koyie Hill intentionally walked!! ^Dempster strikes out, three out

Some blog coments by an ASG Stalker from August of last year: http://www.perfectgame.org/blogs/view.aspx?blog=112 "Ricky Jacquez might not be very big, but he is one of the most talented kids in the country. Big arm, outstanding defensively and he hits. Can't forget he's mid 90s from the mound." Some comments on other notables as well, including Baez. I am assuming Jacquez wants more money than anyone thinks he's worth at this stage. Maybe a 2nd or 3rd round "talent" because of his size?

[ ]

In reply to by The Real Neal

This is the opportunity I think teams should seize upon. Throw extra money at players like Jacquez and see what happens. A good percentage of the time, the player will not reach their potential. But if they do, you got a quality player in the late rounds for a minimal amount compared to their actual worth. I hope they sign Scott, Jacquez, Maples, Urban, Maltos-Garcia, Jensen and Lindgren (along with relievers like Zych and others...not saying these should be the only ones signed). All of them appear to have potential to be decent prospects and could make this an extremely special draft on the pitching side considering our first three picks were hitters.

[ ]

In reply to by The Real Neal

I agree there is a limit and some kids are unsignable - Jacquez and Maltos-Garcia may both envision themselves as first round picks in a few years and be willing to gamble on getting multi-million dollar contracts. But I would be willing to put more on the table for players. And the Cubs have done it in the past (albeit not always successfully) -- McNutt got $100k, Huseby and Logan Watkins both received well-above slot, I believe. For someone like Jacquez, I would be willing to go up to around $1-1.3mm. This is all under the assumption that the description of his raw stuff is accurate and our scouts concur. If so, adding players like Jacquez and Maltos-Garcia could make this draft exceptional if Baez and Vogelbach (and others) develop. And the risk, relative to amounts spent by baseball teams each year, is minimal.

In reply to by springs

In terms of unsignable, here is Baseball America's description of our 47th round pick. "David Ernst capped his high school career by throwing a no-hitter in the North Dakota Class A championship game. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound righthander usually pitches at 85-88 mph, though he did touch 91 in his first outing this spring. His parents are wealthy and he's a good student, so there's virtually no chance he can be lured away from attending North Dakota State."

fun sequence... Campana singled in the 4th with 2 out and Hill up, doesn't steal and Hill singles him to third and Dempster ends the inning. Campana single again in the 6th with 2 outs, this time steals and Hill is IBB and Dempster ends the inning.

Dempster was "emptying the tank" according to Len and Bob, figuring the 6th would be his last inning. Who wants to bet Quade sends him back out in the 7th to blow the lead and game?

During high school baseball tryouts of my senior season, they did a drill where the first basemen would throw a "grounder" to guys at third, who would then field it and throw back to first. One of my friends fielded it, then did a crow's hop throw to first, just in case anyone was cofused about what position he should be playing. That reminds me a lot of Blake DeWitt batting #3 today.

The game today is how Hendry must have perceived this team being a contender. We would get good starting pitching (and he felt he could count on Z, Demp, Garza for good starts, Wells to develop more consistency and Cashner's development giving better than a normal #5) and get the ball to Marshall, Wood and Marmol. We would get some HRs from Aramis and Pena and some other production from the rest of the lineup. A terrible plan, as it turns out, but today was evidence that this projection can occur.

Submitted by Koyies Bansaw on Wed, 06/08/2011 - 5:32pm. Anybody got a lot of promise who is signable among those guys, AZ Phil? =================================== K BANSAW: 39th round pick Ricky Jacquez would be a nice pick-up, but he's almost certainly known to be unsignable or he wouldn't have fallen that far. Most of the players selected on the third day of the draft (rounds 31-50) are viewed as minor league roster filler or are essentially unsignable based on who they are and what they want (like a 5th or a 10th round talent who wants top of the 1st round money to give up college), but 41st round pick RHP Austin Urban sticks out as somebody who could turn out to be a McNutt/Struck type under-the-radar JC guy. I'd also like to see the Cubs sign an under-achieving talent like 31st round pick Ronnie Richardson and maybe pay him an over-slot bonus (like maybe "5th round money") if that's what it takes to get him. I doubt that will happen, though. I suspect Richardson will probably want to return to school and try and increase his value for the next draft (he's just a draft-eligible sophomore, so he can afford to wait).

What a shame. I read the "Fish Bytes" article (see comment #131, below, for the link) and it seemed like he did good work with the Marlins from a game preparation standpoint. He may just be a scapegoat, but, as the historical scapegoat died, a real person here loses his livelihood and (to some degree) his professional reputation. It's a sad thing when talented, hard working people get hit with an "off with their heads!" mentality.

Why does everyone keep reporting that the Cubs Owe Big Z $37 Million in '12-'13, According to Cot's Z's '13 player option doesn't kick in unless he's 1st or 2nd in CY voting this year (no chance of that) or top 4 next year (very slim chance) and he has to be healthy at end of '12. I think we can pretty much say that '13 option won't kick in. Or is Cot's wrong and it's a straight player option?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-dunston-son-will… "We’re both very good," Dunston said. "I have a little more talent, but my son is more educated than I am, so he'll get the game a little quicker than me. And he just goes out there, and he knows what I want from effort and everything else will take care of itself. He is also a more patient hitter than I was." Here's a list of other players more patient than Dunston Sr.: Every player to ever play baseball at any level

"Tom came out and told us we'll be more active on the amateur side," Wilken said Wednesday. "When you feel you have a shot to sign players, it changes the strategy in how you pick. It was like Christmas Day for scouts." What Ricketts' message meant was that Wilken and his scouts were able to select high school players that might not have been signable in the past. In Wilken's five years with the Cubs, they have ranked 24th among Major League teams in bonus spending on the amateur side. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110608&content_id=20…

In reply to by Dr. aaron b

they've been 5th for awhile, there's enough legit stuff out there to nail the Cubs on, no reason for your constant tweaking of facts (5/50 offer to Z, etc) nonetheless, Ricketts was only on the job for one of those years and the Cubs were 20th last year while picking 16th and no extra picks and it would be far more fair to compare international bonus signings as well before jumping to conclusions. Also, as judging by the Cubs the last 3 years, spending money doesn't always equal quality. that all being said, judging by whom they drafted and the press quotes, they need to put their money where there mouth is this year.

Interesting, according to a poll of scouts, the Cubs are not one of the teams picked as having one of the best drafts (not that they pick on the Cubs, just don't name them as a top 5 or 10 draft class). http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110608&content_id=20217542 That also doesn't mean squat when none of these guys have signed yet (I think an Astros guy was supposed to sign tonight, but you get my point). Those top guys that AZ got could both get hurt and never make the majors, and some obscure 31st round pick could take massive amounts of HGH and be the star first baseman for Stl. :)

"the odds are long for anyone under a first-round pick to make an MLB roster." Turn that around and say that since there are so many draftees below the first round, the odds are good that several will make it. Just looking quickly at the Reds' active roster, among non-pitchers I find two 1st rounders (Stubbs and Bruce), three 2nd rounders (Phillips, Votto, Rolen), a 5th (Janish), a 17th (Heisey), an 18th (Gomes) and an undrafted FA (Hanigan). Pitchers: Bray (1), Leake (1), Wood (2), Arroyo (3), Masset (8), Ondrusek (13), Fisher (15), Horst (34).

For anyone who might be interested, four Cub draft picks are on teams playing in the NCAA Super Regionals this weekend (all games are on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU): Rafael Lopez, C (Florida State - 16th round pick) John Andreoli, OF (Connecticut - 17th round pick Andrew McKirahan, LHRP (Texas - 21st round pick) Taiwan Easterling, OF (Florida State - 27th round pick)

Did not know this bit of trivia: Albert Pujols played for the Peoria Chiefs (2000). I would surmise they were not a Cubs affiliate then - heh

well in marginally good news, Fukudome having a good June so far, maybe he'll be tradeable. Hopefully Hendry is working the phones starting today to move Pena the first day he can which would be June 16th (well technically earlier if Pena agrees to it). Giants, Rays, Indians, Angels, Mariners, Yankees, Dodgers seem to be the teams with holes at DH/1B and somewhat in the race.

In reply to by The E-Man

Not sure what you mean...he was able to get a strong #3 hitter (Blake Dewitt) merely for a starting shortshop and 15 game winning lefty. [Hopefully my sarcasm is evident]

Navin (Pasadena, CA): As always, thanks for the chat. I was wondering what your opinon was on the Cubs' draft. There seems to be far more HS kids and kids with signabilty questions than in Tim Wilken's previous Cubs drafts. Jim Callis: Tim isn't afraid to take on some risk to get some upside. Javier Baez had the best bat speed in the entire draft, and there were a number of clubs on him from 11-20. Dan Vogelbach doesn't have a classic build, but he has more power than almost anyone in the draft. I thought they stole Tony Zych in the fourth round. The Cubs have a deep farm system steadily producing talent, so they can afford to be patient with the high school kids. Lane (Skokie, IL): Im a big Cubs fan and wanted to know how signable Garrett Schlecht is. Jim Callis: I think he'll sign. I cover the Midwest states for the draft, and he has the best combination of ability and signability among Illinois prep prospects this year. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/chat/2011/2611932.html

Junior Lake inching his way to the Mendoza line - 2 hits so far tonight raising avg to .188, including first HR in AA. Vitters with HR #6 and 15th error on the season. 7-1 Tenn over Carolina into the bottom of the 7th.

[ ]

In reply to by Eric S

With one on, Vitters with a double off Aroldis Chapman in the 7th, but advancing runner left stranded at 3rd base, with Chapman striking out the next 2 batters (including the pitcher). Lake with his 4th error (figures) in the 7th, 2 runs in. 7-3 Tenn going into the 8th, Chapman still pitching.

Colvin gets a ground rule double, fan barely reached over fence. Rules seem very stupid there. What it needs to cross to be a HR should be clearly defined, and my view is that no park should have an area where a fan can reach over and interfere with a possible HR. In this case I think there should be a yellow line probably at the top of the green wall, below the fence in front of the fans. Then a fan can't interfere. But that's besides the point. Game goes back to tied. Ugh.

Maybe the umps got this wrong. Here's one of the Citizen's Bank Park ground rules... "OUTFIELD AREA Left Field: • Ball strikes spectator in fair territory: Home Run. //Okay, why would this rule be different in right field???

[ ]

In reply to by Paul Noce

Because they are different. In Left the ball just has to clear the outfield wall and go into the plantings. A fan can reach over the little fence above that and touch the ball before it would hit the plants, but it is too far for a fan to reach over the plants and over the outfield fence. So any ball a fan touches in LF would be a HR anyway, the rule just states that. In RF the ball has to clear the short fence directly in front of the fans to be a HR. So if a fan reaches over and touches it, it likely would have been a double, thus the ground rule double. If it clears the fence and hits the fan, or hits the fan but would have cleared the fence anyway, it's a home run.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.
