Cubs Clip Angel Wings at Fitch Park
Six pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter, and the Cubs scored once in the 6th to break a 1-1 tie and take the lead and two more insurance runs in the 7th to provide the final margin of victory, defeating the Angels 4-1 in AZ Instructional League action this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa.
The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning against Cubs starter Charles Thomas, as Matt Long lined an RBI triple into the RF corner.
The Halos only other hit was a two-out single in the top of the 5th, as Cub relievers combined to retire 11 of the last 12 Angel hitters they faced.
The Cubs tied it up in the bottom of the 2nd on a Jeffrey Baez sacrifice fly, following a lead-off walk to Micah Gibbs and consecutive singles by Neftali Rosario and Justin Marra.
The game remained 1-1 going into the bottom of the 6th inning, when Rubi Silva led-off with a line-drive single over the 2nd baseman’s head, stole 2nd base, and then came around to score on a Rafael Lopez RBI single.
The Cubs scored their final two runs of the day in the bottom of the 7th, as Neftali Rosario reached base on an E-5 to open the inning, and after advancing to 3rd base on a stolen base plus an E-2 overthrow at 2nd base, scored when Trey Martin crushed a two-out RBI double over the centerfielder’s head. And then Carlos Penalver came through with another two-out RBI hit (a single to CF) to plate Martin from 2nd base with the game’s final run.

vogelbach's lack of consistent playing time has me wondering what they have him working on. at least i think it's inconsistent...seems that way...i could be wrong.
i'm assuming he's not hobbled/injured and they have him working on something, anyway. i hear his D is decent. there's very few highschoolers that don't need bat tweaking...and he's new to everyone not in florida...but i wonder what he's working on.

He's definitely making too much money to be sitting on the bench.

im not really 100% sure he isn't seeing regular time...it just seems like he should be playing more to me.
that said...it's nice to finally have a power bat in the system who's possible ceiling is 40+HR rather than 20-30HR. it's been a while...a really really long while. so long that no one's popping to mind that i can recall even in the 90s/00s...brooks k., maybe...ryan harvey, meh...

Your thoughts, AZ Phil? ;)
Also, whom are you most excited about at instructs so far? Thanks!

Next Paul Sullivan will report that he interviewed some guy taking a dump in the stall next to Theo. The guy swears it was Theo as he recognized his shoes. Sully was nearby using the lower kids urinal.

Really? There are so many douchebags around Wrigley that look like Epstein, how would anyone know for sure without requesting two kinds of photo ID?

It's poor journalism. Not too long ago a 'tip' like that would never have been mentioned. It's unverifiable, and Sullivan's writing is amateurish. TMZ and the 24 hour sensationalist media have infected everything.

You are so right.
This is where the "bar" is for aspiring journalists.
Somewhere Edward R. Murrow is puking his guts out.

I love to make fun of Sullivan too, but when the headline is:
"Fans see what they want ... they want to see Epstein"
and then proceeds to write a very tongue in cheek article, there should be no aspirations of trying to win a Pulitzer with it. It even includes the line:
Anything is open to speculation with no information available.
About the most harmless article in the world, get over it people.

Was just going to post similiar thoughts. I don't like Sullivan at all, but this was clearly not meant to be taken so seriously.

Comcast new england is also re-reporting the Sullivan article but says at the bottom that according to "sources" the Cubs have gotten permission to talk to Epstein (although the Redsox haven't said that publicly).

My sources say Paul Sullivan is considering offers to take a job with TMZ. They have offered him the Brad Pitt gig. TMZ wanted someone with some baseball experience now that Pitt is a GM. Sully was last seen getting a banana and a grande mocha latte at a starbucks in LA to prepare for a dummy interview with Angeline.

Had the pleasure of seeing this game on Saturday with the esteemed AZ Phil. It was great talking with him and, as you can see from the report, it didn't distract him in the slightest from reporting on the game. These Instructional League games are the best way of seeing professional ballplayers play the game. Talk about being close to the action and the players -- nothing compares.

I would have loved to, but alcoholic beverages are prohibited at Fitch Park (per their sign at the entrance). No concessions stand open, either, so couldn't offer to buy him anything else while we were there. I did offer him a stick of chewing gum...

I could have bought him one at the Arizona Fall League game later that night at HoHoKam Park Dwight W. Patterson Field (they have beer at their concessions), but he worked that evening (he does all this and has a job!) and couldn't attend.
