Game 20 Thread - Halladay vs. Maholm

So is Halladay vs. Maholm a mismatch or the biggest mismatch ever?

Good news is the Phillies offense has struggled quite a bit without Howard and Utley. Bad news is they're still the Cubs at the end of the day.

i can't believe i'm going to sit through this...at least PHI isn't as strong as they could be.

good news: cubs and angels have the same w/l record
good news for the angels: it's only april
bad news for the cubs: it's only april

Samardzija's next start pushed to Tuesday, Volstad will stay on 4 days rest and go Monday.

campy shows bunt, pulls back, called strike.

classic.

uh castro...

his name is "juan pierre"...you have to charge a ball like that...or give up a 70ft single hit in front of you.

well, it only took 3 innings to learn that lesson...good job.

Juan Pierre? Really?

wtf cubs lead?

1-0, top 4, man on 1st, 1 out.

Well there's your run Maholm, don't get greedy

B2b walks including Maholm and DeJesus swings at the first pitch.

Sigh

first walk to a pitcher from holladay since may 2011.

also, comcast phi were talking about the new cubs GM theo...and a graphic for him being a team addition as GM...lulz Invisible Jed.

soriano...finding awesome new ways to suck.

*golf clap*

Must however give Soriano his due for a nice single with Campy on 3rd!

Z down 3-0 to the DBacks in the 6th.

5 IP, 10 H, 3R, 3ER, 2K, 2BB, 1HR

not pitching up to his salary yet (hoping to have the Cubs get their money's worth).

Bears trade up 5 slots in the 2nd round, 45th pick (13th in the 2nd round). Get big WR from South Carolina, Jeffrey Alshon; 6'4" 230 (some controversy about his weight). Supposedly not that fast but great on balls up in the air.

and Campana spark plugs another round of scoring in the 6th, 3-0 Cubs.

Soriano looking stoopid getting tossed out in a quasi run down between 3rd and Home, just trotting toward home to get tagged. Course he did get a nice rbi single to score Campana before an rbi double by Stewart.

If Campana is hitting 438 at the end of the season, I'm first in line at the Campy autograph booth

I think the line will be epic if that happens. Huuuuuuuuge . . . Will anyone hit .400 again?

Brett Jackson and Tony Rizzo are both going to hit .400. Next year. Duh.

If I'm remembering the play correctly, Soriano's mistake was not running home on the play, it was stopping halfway. He was running on contact, and his job was to score or get tagged out, not to get in a rundown. Why? Because if he stopped halfway, they would get the force at first and then resume chasing him. He turned an out at home (with the runner behind him replacing him at third) into a double play that ended the inning.

Uh oh - anyone else seeing a future for Starlin in RF? You heard it here first! Bam!

Bob Brenly, bottom 7th, Mayberry vs Russell, 2-2 count based on questionable calls by home plate ump CB Bucknor.

"that's strike four, man is he bad. If a hitter were this bad he'd be somewhere in the minors or be carrying a lunch bucket."

rant continues.

and soriano makes the 3rd out on a fly ball in left that he misjudges, quite the adventure...but eventually he lopes back toward the wall for the catch.

But meanwhile Brenly has used the term "scuffled" as a direct replacement for "struggled" 3 times in the last inning. This is my biggest pet peave on earth and started happening in sportscasting about 3 years ago. Ugh! I know you can possibly argue it applies, but a scuffle is typically a scrappy fight between two entities . . . To say somebody was scuffling earlier in the year when they gave up 12 runs in 12 innings is moronic. Just cause it sounds like struggling and sometimes has the word 'struggle' in the definition doesn't mean it works there. Aaa agh!

Oh hi guys. Didn't see you there. As you were . . . Nothing to see here.

Well, it also means to walk while dragging one's feet, so the idea being that you are being bogged down, not moving like you should, etc. being applied to a player who is struggling and needs to pick his feet up and get going again.

Huuuuge stretch. I am aware of all that ... But all it is is these guys using it in place of struggling. Watch for it, it's not used well. And there is NO WAY these guys are using it in the almost allegorical sense that you are able to understand it. This is a damn sportscast. They've turned it into "struggling" period. Maholm was not dragging his feet earlier in the season. That is a form of defiance. He was sucking, struggling, etc.

Stewart either has money on the Phillies tonight, or he cannot see the ball to his left. Those lunges to his left have looked comical. And he usually plays those balls. I really do wonder if the green screen behind the plate is throwing him for a loop. Really weird looking plays AND he let starlin have a third one.

I-Cubs postponed at Nashville.

Raining country music.

its fun watching Campana play. He would have been a blast on the 2008 team.

Bears 3rd round pick is Brandon Hardin, safety from Oregon State. Big: 6'3", 217 lbs.

Missed the entire 2011 season from injury.

Weakness: Hardin has been held back significantly by injuries throughout his career. He is a bit of a slow-footed athlete, and his size makes him a tweener despite his cover skills. He hasn't played enough snaps at Oregon State to show he is NFL-ready and worthy of an early round pick.

Strength: Hardin is a physical cover corner who excels playing up close to the line. He has serious value for a Cover 2 team that likes big and physical corners who can support in the flats. He is a good athlete and has impressive hip fluidity for a man of his size, and he uses his length well in-phase.

Overview: Hardin is a physically imposing corner who is an intriguing prospect, considering the little playing time he has received the past two years because of multiple injuries. While these injuries are a concern, if teams can look at Hardin's potential, he will likely be picked in the middle rounds as a developmental defensive back who could potentially move to safety.

More crap for the Bears. What is this, the freaking 4th year in a row they've drafted a safety in the 3rd round? WTF? Plus, this kid didn't play all last year as-noted in your quote, he was ranked no higher than the 5th-best safety in the draft (and I saw a couple of lists with him barely in the top 10). Projections were for a 5th round placement, at the least he surely would have been available in the 4th round.

Conclusion: lousy pick. Again. I like the WR in 2, I hate this pick and the 1st round pick. Same old Bears.

i reserve judgement on round one. The Oregon State pick I agree totally, however.

I am so sick of the Bears drafting players with ANY injury history.

Was hoping the new Sheriff would change things.

based on the injury history, he could be related to Rich Harden

Tribune story up on Hardin...
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football...

Hardin missed the entire season last year with a broken shoulder but did play in the East-West Shrine Game. The Bears brought him in for a pre-draft visit a little more than two weeks ago, no doubt to check him out medically. Earlier in his college career, he had a broken hand and wrist.

Hardin was timed in the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds at his pro day and put up 24 reps on the bench press at 225 pounds. He was a popular prospect the last few weeks with about 15 visits as many teams wanted to do work on him.

Hardin made 15 starts in college, 12 coming in 2010 when he had 63 tackles and three forced fumbles.

I love this site

It was Halladay's lousy career numbers against the Cubs (1-4 at game time) vs. Maholm's lousy career record on the road (18-43). Somebody had to lose this one.

What's nice is the they will be missing Hamels. Big Fat Joey Blanton today, Kendrick tomorrow, Worley Ball Monday. SWEEP!

Probably not.

Blanton is not scheduled to pitch? I thought he is starting as of last nite.

What? He pitched yesterday. Kinda like what I said. Blanton, Kendrick, and Worley.

Oh I see now. Thought yoy were saying they were MISSING those three.

Nevermind.

Didn't work out well for our guys anyway...

  • Sure, no marks and some inconsistencies in the witness's statements. But firing your gun into garage wall immediately after an argument and punching out your car window is still threatening and out of control behavior. There was certainly enough for MLB to think it warranted a 30-game suspension.

  • I'd prefer they be flexible with the closing situation depending on matchups. You're not really adding a lefty reliever if you use him strictly as a closer.

  • Stockpiling young talent isn't only for trading for someone like Chapman though. Even with an elite closer winning the World Series is basically a crap shoot so the key is to get to the playoffs as much as possible and not just mortgage everything on one year. Once you get there an elite bullpen certainly helps but the playoffs can be won by one hitter or starting pitcher getting hot (Murphy, Molina, Baumgardner) and a closer might not be able to stop that.

  • I'm also not crazy about press convictions. As the police report noted, there were no marks on the lady in question. There's a TMZ link (of course) to her police pictures, as well.

I think the only way this trade goes real bad is if Cubbery intervenes and Chapman is suddenly bad for some reason.

  • I am right there with you closing in on 60.

I don't care that much about "mortgaging" one player who is not only blocked by two guys, but is not ready to hit the majors for at least a couple years.

There is no reason why this team, this year, can't have a real shot at something NONE of us have experienced.

Further, I don't feel that even if they fall short that they have ruined their farm system.

I have made my opinion clear here, with others, Warren was shit on the Cubs save one spot start.

  • Trading for Warren, Warren sucking, getting Warren back for Chapman plus 3 prospects, sounds like Revenge of The Yankees on the former Boston executive. Old rivalries never die.

I pray to the heavens above Chapman doesn't suck for some reason, or he'll be booed out of town faster than a Todd Hundley revival meeting.

  • This offseason, after some ridiculous playoff run and Chapman saving every game from here until the end of the postseason striking out 27/9innings, I welcome anyone to quote this thread and call me a dummy: I hate this trade, and my hate is 2 parts Chapman makes this team less likeable and 1 part that's a ridiculous overpay for 30 regular season innings and, at tops, 10 postseason innings. Already hoping they don't extend him.

  • btw...Thanks AZ Phil. I'm really enjoying your take on this trade.

  • I'm a bit disappointed on the Warren experience. Essentially they gave Castro away for crickets (OK, well they signed Zobrist with the Castro salary dump). Otherwise one might look at it as Chapman for Castro and our #1 minors prospect (Torres) + McKinney/Crawford. Seems pricey for a 2 month rental. We will see if this price tag is that steep in a relative way based on the remaining deadline deals for relievers.

Cubster 3 hours 13 min ago view
  • Yep. One of the great things about this team (in addition to being really good at baseball) was the "likable" factor. Feels a bit different now. Who knows...maybe Chapman will be the king of the dance parties.

  • Here are some possible corresponding minor league moves we might see in the aftermath  of the Chapman trade:

SOUTH BEND to MYRTLE BEACH: OF Donnie Dewees and INF Bryant Flete

EUGENE to SOUTH BEND: OF Robert Garcia and INF Vimael Machin

There is really no reason to replace Billy McKinney at Tennessee because both Chris Coghlan and Jorge Soler are doing their rehab at Tennessee.

And there are plenty of pitchers at Iowa. No need to replace Warren at AAA. .

  • I am 70 years old. The Cubs last played in the World Series in 1945. I was born in 1946. I hate to lose a prospect like Torres, but when the opportunity is there to get that World Series ring, you go for it. This was the idea in stock piling all this young talent. I would like to see Reddick added now and the Cubbies should be done.

Hagsag 4 hours 12 min ago view
  • I would expect Richard to accept an optional assignment because based on how he's played this season, there is a decent chance that he won't find work elsewhere. Rather stay and potentially get a ring. Same goes for Coghlan since he's struggled mightily this year.

Edwards should not go down. He's pitched very well and Maddon is very impressed with him. I would expect Grimm to go down for Cahill so he can get back on track (he's pitched better in July, but he's not getting enough appearances).

    chitownmvp01 4 hours 16 min ago view
  • chitownmvp01: Indeed Clayton Richard would seem to be odd man out once Chapman reports, but Richard might accept a minor league assignment if he is promised a return to Chicago on 9/1 when MLB Active List rosters expand (Richard has minor league ioptions left).

Arizona Phil 4 hours 19 min ago view
  • The only player in the deal that would cause me a second thought is Gleyber Torres.

McKinney and Crawford are decent prospects but both are redundant/replaceable in the system and Warren was really only a middle-reliever or #6 starter, so to me it's really just Torres for Chapman.
