Bianco Blast the Difference-Maker at Talking Stick

Justin Bianco hammered a solo home run leading off the bottom of the 5th to break a 1-1 tie, and it was just enough as the Diamondbacks edged the Cubs 2-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Whirlwind Field at Salt River River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Junior Lake continued his rehab, batting six times (once in each of the first six innings) and playing shortstop for seven innings.

Lake grounded a single through the box leading off the top of the 1st and scored the Cubs only run of the game on a wild pitch later in the inning, struck out (swinging) in the top of the 2nd and then again in the top of the 3rd, grounded out to shortstop in the 4th, struck out swinging in the 5th, and hit into a 6-4 FC in the 6th. He also handled seven chances flawlessly in the field, and was the “middle-man” in two 4-6-3 double plays.

Lake is scheduled to play in one more EXST game (at Fitch Park tomorrow), before rejoining the Tennessee Smokies on Thursday or Friday.

RHP Rob Whitenack (June 2011 TJS) got the start for the Cubs and threw three innings (40 pitches) of no-hit shutout ball, allowing one walk while striking out two (5/2 GO/FO).

Thanks Phil.
How long do you think before Whitenack is sent up? Didn't he leave off in Tennessee before he got hurt?

Thanks Phil.

============================

JACE: It will probably be a matter of getting his innings-per-game up to five and his pitch-count up into the 75-80 pitch range.

So far he has been outstanding in his five starts (0.00 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, .139 OppBA - 9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K), but he hasn't thrown more than three innings (first time today) or 40 pitches (also today) in a game yet.

He was at AA Tennessee when he hurt his elbow.

I understand LePage was released????

  • Cardinals starting pitcher Carlos Martinez removed from the game against the Pirates in the top of the fourth due to some undisclosed (arm?) injury

  • .500

Check this: If the Cubs just play .500 until the end of the season, from today on May 6th, they are at 89 wins.

How we would have drooled for that in 2010.

Shane Victorino added to Iowa #Cubs roster today

  • The awesome quote was something like "Just gotta play a little country hardball..."

It was awesome. I envisioned him in snake-skin boots, Stetson, and a lump of dip in his lip with his Texas gun strapped to his hip.

  • Listening to an interview with Lackey on WSCR - he sounds a bit like a gruff Fozzie Bear

  • FWIW -- Lackey was the only RH batter to get a hit off of Scherzer. KB and Baez were 0-for-6 with 6Ks. Gotta love lefty/righty balance, and switch-hitters.

  • Somebody needs to explain to Richard the concept of run differential. Dammit, this was a tough one to absorb.

  • In the same vein, I hope we can now dispense with "LaStella sucks as a starter".

  • They just wanted to get Rondon a save is why they gave up those runs. Madden is a genius that way....

  • 15 games over .500...not a bad place to be on may 6th.

  • Brian Schlitter moments aside - what a sweet win!

  • this ump...at least he seems consistently shitty.

  • c.richard with another outing making him look expendable...

hey may be a righty, but f.pena put in another strong night last night...2ip 0h 1bb 3k

last thing the club seems to need is another reliever, though. the cubs starters keep putting lack-of-work pressure on the pen more than anything so far.

  • Good thing Bryant can play multiple positions. If he was only a 3B he'd be frustrated sitting.

  • I think it might have been just the push he needed.

  • I believe +411 by the '39 Yankees is the all-time record.
