One Run Done Won

Denied the walk-off RBI by his once-burned, twice-shy skipper, Anthony Rizzo instead scampered across with the game's only tally in the bottom of the 9th tonight at Principal Park to give the I-Cubs a 1-0 win over New Orleans.

Luis Valbuena led off with a single before Rizzo doubled up the alley in left center. Dave Bialas rightly put the brakes on Valbuena with nobody out. Earlier he'd sent plodding catcher Juan Apodaca to the plate on another of Valbuena's three singles but he was apprehended by a strong throw from Zephyrs' left-fielder Chris Coghlan.

Following Rizzo's two-bagger Rob Delaney, who entered the game in the 8th unscored upon this year in 19 innings of work, intentionally passed Ty Wright. JV, elevated to #6 in the lineup due to recent roster attrition, grounded into a force at the plate before Delaney uncorked a wild one that plated Rizzo.

Besides the 9th inning double, the extension of Rizzo's hitting streak to 11 games also included a ringing single off of New Orleans LH Wade LeBlanc. Nice to see him work on his southpaw splits. Also, Rizzo is hitting just below a .300 clip with the bases empty but over .400 with runners in scoring position. Certain situations seem beneath him; others bring out his best.

Jackson didn't play tonight until pinch hitting and flying out in the 8th. Adrian Cardenas also sat out the opener of the home stand. Rodrigo Lopez worked three efficient innings in his first appearance since clearing waivers and joining the team. Frankie De La Cruz then threw up five zeroes before Blake Parker pitched the 9th and copped the win.

New Orleans might have won but for a botched squeeze play in the 8th on which the batter failed to offer so both teams had runners cut down at the plate before Rizzo finally crossed it safely.

On the drive home from the ballpark I heard the Iowa radio team say that the Cub organization has the worst collective record in baseball with no teams on the plus side of .500. Guess you gotta raze before you rebuild.

DeJesus RF, Mather CF, Castro SS, LaHair 1B, Soriano LF, Stewart 3B, Barney 2B, Soto C, Volstad P vs. Gordon SS Ellis 2B Kemp CF Ethier RF Abreu LF Hairston 3B Loney 1B Treanor C Capuano P

Was Barney safe on that take of second base yesterday off Kemp? I actually thought that was a heads up play as Kemp pulled a Soriano, but the ball clearly beat him. It did look like he slid his left hand in somehow before the tag, but then it looked like he slid off the bag for a second before his right hand grabbed it again. Thoughts? Can't find a replay online.

Soriano and Stewart quickly summarizing why, even in the best case scenario, this team is not good enough to win this year.

Per Rotoworld... In case Garza can't go Sunday: The Cubs have summoned Travis Wood from Triple-A Iowa as a backup. Wood is 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA at Iowa. He has yet to appear in the majors this season.

MLB clubs are now permitted to recall a player from the minors and place him on the Taxi Squad for 24 hours. The Taxi Squad is designed primarily for a situation where a club is contemplating whether to place a player on the DL, but hasn't decided yet. A player recalled and placed on the Taxi Squad does not count against the club's MLB 25-man roster, but he does accrue MLB Service Time (one day). Also, the player does not count against the Active List of the minor league team from which he was summoned, which is why the Iowa Cubs did not have to make a roster move when Randy Wells and Scott Maine were sent down.

bb...wild pitch...ground out...popout...K fun times with marmol in the top 8th. also, PHI released luis montanez from AAA.

Brewers lose Alex Gonzales on an awkward slide into 2nd base on an attempted steal. The catchers throw went into CF. Not sure but it looks like he hurt his ankle. Fox showed the injury but didn't say anything more than he had to leave the game. He was in obvious pain and jammed his right foot on the base and flipped up into the air. oddly enough, Cesar Izturis is the backup SS for the Brewers. (particularly if they sign DLee to replace Matt Gamel).

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
