Cubs & D'backs Split a Pair at T-Stick

Trevor Gretzky singled, doubled, walked, stole a base, scored three runs, and drove-in another, and Danny Lockhart belted an RBI triple to key a five-run 5th, leading the Cubs to a 7-2 victory over the Diamondbacks on Quail Field, and Jeimer Candelario and Xavier Batista each rapped a two-run single and Dustin Geiger laced an RBI double to highlight a five-run 2nd inning, but the D’backs took advantage of four Cub errors (including three errant throws on attempted pick-offs) to score seven unanswered runs en route to a 7-5 victory on Mesquite Field, as the Cubs and Diamondbacks split an Arizona Barbeque Festival Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader this morning at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

3B Dustin Geiger returned to game action today, and hit the ball solidly in all three of his AB.

Geiger was set to be the starting third-baseman at Peoria at the start of the 2012 season, but he suffered a broken hamate bone in his right hand the last day of Minor League Camp, and has spent the past six weeks rehabbing at Fitch Park.

Although it did not lead to a victory for his squad, Trey Martin made two outstanding diving catches in CF in the game on Mesquite Field. He is one of the best defensive outfielders I have seen down here in a long time, and he has made a number of outstanding catches (and throws) from CF at EXST. He's Gold Glove caliber right now.

In what could possibly be described as “EXST Cubs News of the Weird,” 21-year old Korean outfielder Dong-Yub Kim is now throwing left-handed.

DY Kim signed with the Cubs in February 2009, receiving a reported $550K signing bonus (equivalent to “3rd round money”), and made his U. S. debut at AZ Instructs post-2009. At that time he looked like a young Jose Canseco (a 19-year old kid with a combination of speed, HR power, and a rifle-arm), before tearing up his right shoulder and missing the 2010 season. He was limited to playing DH and 1B (and occasionally LF) after returning to action last year, but he has yet to get back to where he was in October 2009 (pre-surgery).

I had noticed him occasionally throwing left-handed when shagging fly balls in BP, but this is the first time he’s thrown left-handed in a game. And he actually throws better left-handed than he does right-handed (post-surgery)!

In EXST Cubs roster news, recently-signed veteran minor league catcher Brian Esposito has been moved-up to AAA Iowa, replacing Blake Lalli on the I-Cubs roster. Esposito played in one EXST game (yesterday) prior to the promotion, and went 0-4 with a walk.

Brian, we hardly knew ye!

=============================

HAGSAG: Not that I have seen.

BTW, the DSL Cubs (#1 and #2) are having Spring Training right now, and the DSL regular season starts on June 2nd, so there may be some additional roster moves betweeen Fitch Park and Ciudad de Beisbol over the next couple of weeks.

Mark Malave is back at Fitch Park, in the rehab group. I don't know what type of injury he sustained, but it apparently required him seing a doctor in the U. S. I don't know whether he will be going back to Boca Chica or if he'll just stay at Fitch Park until he's able to play. Same goes for Jeffrey Baez (wrist injury).

dear fox baseball saturday evening,

die in a fire.

sincerely,

someone that doesn't want to watch BAL/WAS

I second this.

Well, they did spare you listening to Thom Brenneman calling the game.

Is anyone else having Lance Dickson flashbacks whenever Ian Dickson's name is mentioned?

Lance Dickson was the best minor league pitcher I ever saw, with the possible exception of Valenzuela. I would love it if there was more of a similarity that just the name.

i'm kinda glad Fox kept me from watching this game tonight...

http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2012/05/19...

chris perez should be available on the trade market pretty soon...

...and trading sori this offseason (even if he pulls it together like he has the past 5 games with his power) gets a bit harder....as if it wasn't already near-impossible.

"Alfonso Soriano admitted Saturday that recurring pain in his left knee may ultimately force him to undergo a second surgery."

aka, he's pretty much a DH (now more than ever for projection).

http://blogs.suntimes.com/cubs/2012/05/pain_w...

Hey, hats off to Soriano for making the effort on defense this season. Now, with knees obviously shot if you've been watching him try to stop short of the bullpen wall, isn't he the very definition of 'sunk costs'? I can't believe Ricketts' money people or Ricketts himself believed Soriano would finish out his contract with a .285/.320/.500 line average and 30 HRs/80+ RBI from 2012 to 2014.

There HAS to be some point at which "Rizzo at 1B and LaHair in LF" becomes a scenario worth more than $18M/year than "Soriano plugging LF and LaHair at 1B".

Unless Theo, et al are taking crazy pills, you'd like to think so. On WSCR 'Hit & Run" show today, Rozner/Spiegel talk was Soriano likely to go out for knee surgery by June. Unless they wait until most inter-league games are over where Fonzie can DH. Then LaHair in LF, Rizzo at 1B.

  • Strange, because he really seemed to have the Pirates number last year.

Bummer for Jake -- I think this is the first time all year his ERA has been over 3.00, and that will be his number for the year.

7 runs is the most he's given up since august 6th in colorado...in 2014.

  • coghlan out...got his cleats stuck in the wall attempting a play (failed, but looked great doing it). walking off on his own, precautionary/day-to-day looking stuff...hopefully not worse.

also, jake arrieta is literally worse than hitler. 1-5, bottom 5. ...make that 1-6, bottom 5. ...make that 1-7, bottom 5.

  • Coghlan crashes into wall and comes up limping, looks like left knee or ankle. Leaves game...

Arrieta inspiring no confidence yet again.

When he left Boston after nine years as general manager, Epstein said he believed in the philosophy espoused by legendary football coach Bill Walsh: essentially that 10 years is a natural shelf life for a high-stress job.

  • Despite a somewhat slumping September for Bryant (233/310/411), he still leads the NL in WAR by a healthy margin in both fWAR(8.4 vs 7.6 for Seager) and bWAR  (7.6 to 6.5 for Freeman...Seager is tied for 3rd with Arenado at 6.2)

If you just want to look at offense, Bryant is 4th in the NL in wRC+ behind Votto, Murphy and Freeman with Rizzo in 5th (and possibly ahead after tonight).

  • a.rizzo now playing 2nd in a lineup position switch because c.hurdle bitched about rizzo changing gloves and slotting to 2nd on an anticipated bunt play.
