Giant Orange No Match for Cubs at Riverview

D. J. Wilson belted a two-run triple, walked twice, and scored a run, Luis Verdugo drilled two RBI singles, Carlos Morfa smacked a solo HR and singled, and SP Erich Uelmen hurled four innings of one-run ball, leading the Cubs "B" team to an 8-3 victory over the Giants Orange squad in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Barnette Throws in EXST Intrasquad Game at Riverview

Danny Zardon and Marcus Mastrobuoni walloped back-to-back solo HR over the LF fence in the bottom of the 1st inning, Luis Diaz tripled, singled, and scored a run, and Herson Perez singled, stole a base. scored a run, and drove-in another with a sacrfice fly for the "A" team, and Widimer Joaquin ripped an RBI double, walked twice, stole a base, and scored two runs, and Raymond Pena (RBI double) and Richard Nunez (RBI single) drilled run-scoring hits to cap a four run 3rd inning for the "B" team, in Cubs Extended Spring Training intrasquad game action Thursday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

The game was called after six innings of play with the score tied 5-5.

RHRP Tony Barnette (on Cubs MLB 10-day IL - right shoulder inflammation) started the game for the "A" team and threw 14 pitches (8 strikes), recorded four outs (2/2 GO/AO), and allowed a walk before being relieved after he reached his pre-planned pitch limit.

RHSP Erick Leal got the start for the "B" team and was struck on the left leg just below the knee with a high-velocity line-drive off the bat of Luis Diaz in the bottom of the 1st inning and had to be carried off the field. Leal surrendered the back-to-back homers to Zardon and Mastrobuoni just prior to getting hit by the Diaz liner, so needless-to-say it wasn't exactly the best of outings for the right-hander.

Here is the box score from the game:

Albertos Keeps Rollin' at Riverview

D. J. Wilson singled, walked twice, stole a base, and scored two runs, Jonathan Soto drilled an RBI single, Jose Gutierrez rifled a two-run double, and Jose Albertos fired three innings of shutout ball (four strikeouts, 5/0 GO/AO, FB 94-97, and struck out the side in his final inning of work), as the Cubs "B" team whitewashed the Athletics Green squad 4-0 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Wednesday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

The game was pre-planned as an eight-inning contest.

RHP Chad Hockin (on Myrtle Beach 7-day IL - May 2018 TJS) saw his first game action in more than a year, working one shutout inning (17 pitches).

Jose Albertos last three EXST outings (combined):
7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K, 14/0 GO/AO, 93 pitches (59 strikes)

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Rockies Relentless at Salt River Fields

Jesus Asuaje rifled two doubles, walked, stole a base, and scored a run, Bladimir Restituyo belted a triple and an RBI single, stole two bases, and scored two runs, and Reese Berberet  (RBI double), Julio Carreras (RBI single), and LeeMarcus Boyd (RBI single) contributed run-scoring hits to a 15-hit attack, as the Rockies repelled the Cubs "B" team 6-2 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Tuesday morning on Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick east of Scottsdale, AZ.

The Rockies stole seven bases (no CS) and had traffic on the bases every inning (they left 14 men on base in addition to scoring six runs).

Caleb Knight (a two-run double and a single) and Fabian Pertuz (two singles, a double, a stolen base, and a run scored) provided most of what there was of Cub offense in the game.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

A Trio of Triples and a Tater Help Cubs Upend D'backs

Fabian Pertuz ripped a triple and scored on a Jonathan Soto sacrifice fly to put the Cubs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd, D. J. Wilson smacked an RBI triple in the 3rd, Rafael Mejia belted a two-run triple in the 5th, and Brennen Davis blasted a solo HR leading off the bottom of the 7th, helping the Cubs "B" team rally from an early 3-0 deficit to overtake the Diamondbacks 5-3 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Monday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

Prior to the game on Field #5, RHP Keegan Thompson (on AA Tennessee 7-day IL since April 11th) threw "live" BP on Field #6.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

D. J.'s Choice of Music Not to A's Liking at Riverview

D. J. Wilson tripled, walked twice, stole a base, and scored two runs, Luis Diaz collected two RBI (an RBI double and walked with the bases loaded to force-in a run), and Jake Slaughter drilled an RBI single, walked, and scored, as the Cubs "A" team edged the Athletics Green squad 4-3 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Saturday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

The Cubs drew nine walks (including three by Yonathan Perlaza) and had two batters reach base via HBP to aid their cause.

The game was called after eight innings of play.

RHP Erich Uelmen (on Myrtle Beach 7-day IL) got the start for the Cubs and worked 3.1 IP (61 pitches - 69% strikes), allowing one run on three hits (two singles and a double). He didn't issue any walks, he struck out four (three swinging), and he induced the A's hitters who did make contact to repeatedly pound his pitches into the ground (6/0 GO/AO).

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Perez, Albertos, and Lee Silence D'backs Bats at Talking Stick.

Jake Slaughter, Gioskar Amaya, and Luis Verdugo stroked run-scoring singles to highlight a three-run 5th inning and Yunior Perez, Jose Albertos, and Chi-Feng Lee combined to hurl six innings of no-run/no-hit ball (Fauris Guerrero surrendered the first hit with two outs in the bottom of the 7th), as the Cubs "A" team defeated the Diamondbacks 3-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday morning on Whirlwind Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Cubs Lay Lumber on D'backs at Riverview

Fernando Kelli collected three singles and a walk, stole a base, scored two runs, and drove-in another, Gioskar Amaya drilled an RBI double and a single, stole a base, and scored three runs, Wladimir Galindo blasted a three-run HR, Marcus Mastrobuoni laced an RBI double, singled and scored, and walked, Abraham Rodriguez doubled and scored and drew a bases-loaded walk to force-in a run, Dalton Hurd singled twice, scored two runs, and knocked-in another, and Rochest Cruz rifled an RBI single and a triple and scored a run, leading the Cubs to a 12-3 drubbing of the Diamondbacks in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Thursday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

The Cubs bashed-out 16 hits (ten singles, four doubles, a triple, and a HR) and drew five walks to propel the high-octane offense that was on display in the game.

The Cubs played only one Cactus League EXST game today, so the squad that hosted the D'backs consisted of elements of both the Cubs "A" team and the Cubs "B" team.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Cubs & Angels Tie One Up at Diablo Stadium

With the Cubs "A" team trailing 3-0 going into the top of the 6th inning, Fernando Kelli lined a lead-off triple into the LF corner and then scored on an RBI GO, Orian Nunez clubbed a solo HR, and Yonathan Perlaza singled, advanced to 2nd base on a FO to the warning track in CF, moved-up to 3rd on a balk, and scored on an Ezequiel Pagan infield single, as the Cubs rallied to score three runs to tie the Angels 3-3, and that's how it ended, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Wednesday morning at Diablo Stadium in Tempe, AZ.

The game was called after nine innings of play.

LHSP Jerryell Rivera hurled four innings of no-run/no-hit ball with seven strikeouts and Angels top prospect OF Jo Adell (right ankle sprain and left hamstring strain suffered while running the bases at Sloan Park in a Cactus League MLB Spring Training game versus the Cubs in March) stroked a single and a double for the Halos, although a "Designated Pinch-Runner" was employed for Adell both times he reached base.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Alzolay Goes Four as Cubs & Rockies Draw in Extras

Brandon Vicens singled in the 3rd, walked and scored on a Rafael Mejia RBI double in the 7th, and drilled a game-tying two-run double in the 8th, Fabian Pertuz singled twice and scored a run, and Marcus Mastrobuoni belted a solo HR, walked twice, scored two runs, and threw out two baserunners attempting to steal and back-picked another one off 1st base for the Cubs, and Eddy Diaz singled and tripled and SP Anderson Amarista hurled four innings of shutout ball for the Rockies, as the two teams played to a ten-inning 5-5 tie in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Tuesday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

Adbert Alzolay (on AAA Iowa 7-day IL - lat strain) got the start for the Cubs and worked four innings (59 pitches). He allowed three runs on five hits (four singles and a Shael Mendoza solo HR), issued one walk, uncorked a WP, and committed two balks. He also struck out eight (six swinging).

Alzolay grew stronger as he worked deeper into the game. After allowing five of the first eight men he faced to reach base, he dialed it up a notch and retired eight of the last nine (seven by strikeout).

Cubs pitchers struck out 17 Rockies during the course of the game, and Chi-Feng Lee pitched an "immaculate" top of the 10th (he struck out the side on nine pitches).

The Cubs played only one Cactus League EXST game today, so the squad that took on the Rockies consisted of elements of both the "A" team and the "B" team.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Keprielian Throws Three Shutout Innings at Cubs at Riverview

Devin Foyle (RBI double), Matt Cross (RBI single), and Max Schuemann (RBI single) stroked run-scoring hits to highlight a four-run 3rd inning and SP James Kaprielian hurled three innings of shutout ball, leading the Athletics Gold squad to an 8-4 victory over the Cubs "A" team in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Monday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

The game was pre-planned as an eight-inning contest.

Kaprielian was the New York Yankees 1st round draft pick (#16 overall) in 2015 out of UCLA and was traded to the Oakland A's in July 2017 as part of the package for Sonny Gray. This was Kaprielian's first game action since 2016 (he underwent TJS in April 2017 and shoulder surgery in July 2018). His FB velo is way down from where it was three years ago (was 94-97 in 2015-16) and he didn't miss many bats today, but he had good command of his CV and generally threw strikes (3.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 1 HBP, 2 GIDP, 3/4 GO/AO).

Abraham Rodriguez (reinstated from the Restricted List last week) clubbed a three-run HR onto the south bank of the Loop 202 Freeway and singled for the Cubs in a losing cause.

RHP Erich Uelmen (on Myrtle Beach 7-day IL) made his second Cactus League EXST rehab start for the Cubs and worked one out into the third inning (37 pitches), allowing a run on three hits (all three singles) and a walk.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Giants Orange Offense a Labour of Love at Riverview

Franklin Labour ripped a solo HR and an RBI single and scored two runs, Fabian Pena laced two RBI doubles and scored a run, Yorlis Rodriguez hammered an RBI double and an RBI single, and Anyesber Sivira singled, tripled, stole a base, and scored two runs, leading a Giants Orange squad 14-hit attack en route to a 8-1 thrashing of the Cubs "A" team in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Saturday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

Orian Nunez belted a solo HR leading off the bottom of the 3rd to account for the lone Cub run.

The game was pre-planned as an eight-inning contest.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Dingcong-Kelly Combo Too Much for Cubs at Fitch Park

Gio Dingcong belted a two-out two-run double to put the A's on the board in the bottom of the 1st and SP Rafael Kelly tossed five innings of one-hit shutout ball, leading the Athletics Gold squad to a 5-1 victory over the Cubs "B" team in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday morning on Field #3 at the Lew Wolff Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

The game was called after eight innings of play.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Alzolay Stifles Snakes at Salt River Fields

Pedro Martinez drilled an RBI single to drive-in Rochest Cruz and put the Cubs on the board in the top of the 3rd and then Diamondbacks Joey Rose and Keshawn Lynch belted back-to-back doubles with one out in the bottom of the 5th to knot the score, and that's the way it ended as the Cubs and D'backs played to a 1-1 tie in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Thursday morning on Whirlwind Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

SP Adbert Alzolay (on Iowa 7-day IL - lat strain) hurled three innings of shutout ball for the Cubs (F-9, P-5, 4-3 * P-4, 1B - CS, K * K, K, 1B, 6-4 FC). He threw 39 pitches (11 in the 1st, 12 in the 2nd, and 16 in the 3rd), of which 22 were strikes. All three of his strikeout victims went down swinging. Alzolay velo was FB 92-95 (T-96), CH 83-86, and CV 79-82, and he was generally able to command all three of his pitches. The FB gained velo during the outing, starting at 92-94 in the 1st inning before consistently sitting at 94-95 (touched 96 once) in the 2nd and 3rd. He mixed his FB & CV (only) in his first two innings, before introducing his CH (he threw five) in his third inning. Alzolay was almost too efficient, because after finishing his three innings of work in the game, he was directed to throw an additional 15 pitches in the bullpen (five FB, five CV, and five CH).

The Cubs played only one Cactus League EXST game today, so the squad that traveled to Salt River Fields consisted of elements of both the "A" team and the "B" team.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Hannemann Sets the Table for Cub Feast

Jacob Hannemann singled twice, doubled, drew a walk, stole a base, and scored two runs, Gioskar Amaya singled twice, scored a run, and drove-in another, Pedro Martinez laced an RBI double, walked, and scored two runs, and Wladimir Galindo ripped a two-run HR and knocked in a third run with a sacrifice fly, propelling the Cubs "B" team to an 8-5 victory over the Giants Orange squad in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Wednesday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

The game was pre-planned as an eight-inning contest.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.
