First, the Z news:

The Cubs have placed Carlos and his shoulder strain on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 19th (Zambrano's second career trip to the Disabled List, the other coming in 2002), and they have recalled Eric Patterson from Iowa. Patterson is in Lou Piniella's lineup this afternoon, playing left field and hitting second.

As for the game at hand, the first-place Cubs go for their 13th consecutive win at Wrigley and try to improve on their overall 30-8 record at home, while trying to extend a four-game winning streak over the White Sox, the longest streak either team has enjoyed since interleague play began in '97.

The White Sox—with a mark of 17-21 away from U.S. Cellular Fans Beating Up Opposition's First-Base Coach Field—try to avoid their 8th consecutive road loss.

And everybody hopes that those isolated thunderstorms find somewhere else to play besides the corner of Clark & Addison.

Zambrano on why he likes the Cubs/White Sox series.... "Every time I go to U.S. Cellular, or Comiskey, or whatever is the name of the ballpark, people starts screaming at you and saying all kinds of things, calling you all kind of things." “That’s good. They say something like ‘Homosexual.’ Sometimes I’m in the outfield and they say bad words. ‘You’re a homosexual.’ I say ‘I’m going to show him I’m (not) a homosexual on the mound.’ That’s kind of like a good feeling between the Cubs and the Sox.” http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2008/06/c…

Farking Cardinals are already out in front of Boston 4-0. The Cubs are playing *phenomenal* baseball, yet the Cards are still right there. Ominous. Also, wtf is with the Lou & Ozzie rap?

Why didn't Jon Lieber get an appearance today? Did he piss in Lou's Cheerios or something? Liebs seems to be on the one inning per week plan now...

Nice performance from the idiots for the 7th - inning stretch. Is there anyone alive (aside from the Cub's Marketin$$g Dept.) who wants this abomination to continue? Geez.

What a nice win. I'm a little worried about Marmol and Howry. Without those 2 guys pitching like they did in 07, the bullpen goes back down to an average or even slightly below average pen. I think with all the talk of the Cubs needing a starter, Hendry might actually have to make a move to improve the pen if those 2 can't get it together. I'd say mostly likely they do...a little more worried about Marmol since up until last year, control issues were his main problem.

I agree with you. With Marmol completely lost on the mound as he has been his last two appearances, our pen drops from "awesome" to "mediocre". I know Crunch disagrees, but I think Marmol is tired and therefore not holding himself closed in his pitching form...and he tries to compensate by over throwing and probably over thinking too. 1IP, 0H, 5BB, 2HBP, 1WP, 5ER. That's tough to accomplish. With that said, I don't think a trade will help, we just need our guys to pitch to expectation and we'l be fine.

Reiterating my post. I don't post here often because, frankly, I'm intimidated by the huge smartness and baseball sense here. But I've been a student of the game for a long time and I think Marmol's delivery ended today with a bit of flutter I've never seen. So. He's tired. If the cubs screw up this guy, I swear to god I'll shoot myself. Okay, not myself. Somebody, though. Oh, I can't do that either. Well, then I'll tether myself to Ozzie Guillen's SUV.

I didn't see the game and was going to ask here why Fontenot was pinch-hit for. Then I see the recap (from the score link) which sez: "Cubs manager Lou Piniella had just one regret after the outburst -- he pinch-hit for Fontenot when he came to bat for the second time, denying him a chance to also hit two homers in the same inning. "'You know, I didn't realize that,' Piniella said. 'I shouldn't have. I wouldn't have. I just didn't realize it. Those are those senior moments.'" That's OK with me on an 11-7 win, but I hope Lou doesn't have too many more 'senior moments.' He should not be admitting to them out loud, in any case.

No link cause I'm on my cell, but per Trib article Vasquez said he isn't worried about the Cubs offense cause there are more potent lineups in the AL. The Sox are sure talkin a lot of trash and I hope our unimpressive lineup puts another 11 up tomorrow.

edmonds has produced i worry about how long it will take for a trip to the dl but knowing he is AT the end of his career he knows this may be his last chance for postseason, i look forward to the trip to st louis for him. also heard that r.johnson could be headed to dl that could be the move when marshall comes up.

I for one think it's an awful thing we've taken 2 so far against the WhiteSux. Think of all that the wives of Sux fans have had to endure these past few days - being screamed at for not having enough Old Milwaukee in the fridge, chastised for not taping the latest episode of Cops upon which their husbands played a prominent role (unfortunately, not as the Cops), ridiculed for not cleaning the gun collection. So long as the Cubs lose tomorrow, they'll be doing these poor women a huge favor.

the trib cleaned up some of this language methinks... when I wrote it in the "Ace" post I was just trying to be humorous (Z opting for a DL stint when he found out he couldn't bat), but it seems like it might have been completely factual. http://tinyurl.com/56xaf8 "I don't like to pitch in American League ballparks [anyway]," Zambrano said. "I feel bored. The games are too long. I like the National League. You're competing and no one has to come in for me and do the DH part. I like to compete and play against the White Sox. Every time I go to U.S. Cellular, or Comiskey, or whatever is the name of the ballpark, people start screaming at you, calling you all kinds of things.

next weekend schedule: Friday 6/27 at 3:05 PM, Cubs vs Sox, at whatever is the name of the ballpark Saturday 6/28 at 2:55 PM, Cubs vs Sox, at whatever is the name of the ballpark Sunday 6/29 at 7:05 PM, Cubs vs Sox, at whatever is the name of the ballpark

SCHEDULE WOES: One thing that concerns me is that this team has not learned to win on the road. IF they do not build at least a 5-7 game lead by the time September rolls around, it could be a really bumpy September.. As far as I can count, their top Central rivals they play 3 more times away, than home. And, as we all know, they have to finish in NY and MILW in the last week - the Brewers have been playing good ball over the last 10.

10:30-Arrived at Addison street station 10:35-First Miller Lite at Bernies, begins to rain 10:37-Second Miller lite Crowd was mixed with both fans very cordial, I was with three Sox fan friends they seemed nervous and I told there was nothing to worry about. 11:00- Steak Sandwich from Bernies. Fabulous. My Sox friend agreed it hit the spot. 11:45- After several more oat sodas we head to game 12:05 -Play ball, sitting down right field line two rows off the wall. Weather is fantastic, sunny with a breeze, Speilberg could not recreate a more perfect day on film. 12:06-Fukudome makes a diving catch in front of us. Awesome First inning- Dye homers, Sox friends high fiving, I tell them its annoying when Cubs spot teams runs like that. First Old Style arrives; I predict to my friends 10-9 game, but discretion does not allow me to them who will win. Second inning- Fukudomo throws warm up ball into bleachers, Sox fan catches and throws it back onto field, delays start of inning. Stay classy Fourth inning- Sox score two runs....not enough. From my angle I could tell that each ball hit was gone. I celebrate with all the Cubs fans around me, Sox fans sit and rightfully sulk. Feeling fully croisened I did not realize that Edmonds homers came in the same inning. WHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEE! Game goes along everyone is pretty civil, until a guy down the row wearing a Cubs wife beater shirt and wrap around Blue Blocker sunglasses starts yelling at Sox fans. We shout him down, tell him to take the high road. My friends want to hit the bar in the eighth, I agree and enjoy some more brews at the new Harry Caray's formerly Hi Tops. Cubs win. Went to a friends on Sheffield and played some bags then caught a $80 cab ride back to Southwest Suburbs. Good times, although I'm worried about Marmol.

Reed Johnson received an anti-inflammatory injection in his back on Thursday and is likely to go on the disabled list after the weekend series ============ This is the same treatment Daryle Ward recieved, albeit with a bit less fanfare as Ward's was preannounced followed by a DL stint. Reed Johnson did have lumbar disc surgery on 4/16/07 so he might be on the DL for more than the minimum 2 weeks but the improvement is quite unpredictable and he'll probably need some rehab time in Arizona if it does take more than 2 weeks. The formal term is an epidural steroid injection (ESI). video presentation on ESI: http://tinyurl.com/47uq36 RJohnson's surgery: http://tinyurl.com/33t6ob Ward's been on the DL since May 18th, so if (as AZ Phil says) he's back next weekend, his DL stint will add up to 5-1/2 weeks. I think this means Eric Patterson (or Murton/Hoffpauir) won't go down when they call up Sean Marshall.

I'm also worried about Edmonds, his foot really looked to be hurting while he rounded the bases after his second jack. This, after he rested during the last three games, and now Johnson will be out for awhile as well. Yikes, we're suddenly thin in the OF.

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

  • crunch (view)

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

  • Eric S (view)

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

  • crunch (view)

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

  • crunch (view)

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
