Based on what we've seen I agree that Izzy must go away. But what if he starts coming together? Then we've really got something. As long as he doesn't kill the Cubs against these lesser opponents, I am not against giving him a last chance.

the excuse? probably cuz he can field... my main concern with him has nothing to do with his glove/range, but his 2 throwing errors in 2 days. without an accurate arm he's late inning D replacement. he's gotta have the complete D package to be a guy worth keeping as a starter with the groundball guys unless his bat comes around. that said, theriot's more of a part-time SS than a full-time SS because he's adequate at best. maybe he's just shaking off the rust, though. he was never automatic, but he's not a chump there. the race between the posibilities of theriot's improving D vs. izturis's improvement of his arm accuracy and/or bat should be interesting. last i checked cedeno was a decent pinch runner. =p

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/2007_bo.shtml not sure if you guys saw this, but Baseball Reference has this wonderful batting lineup page, tells you the lineup each game and most common lineups, etc. Theriot leading the race for the #2 spot for our preseason contest. as for izturis, I dunno. Maybe with Z and Marquis and their groundball tendencies, Lou's going for D.

"last i checked cedeno was a decent pinch runner. =p" Well decent pinch runners should a. know to look back at the plate to see if a player draws a BB, b. should not overslide a base and then get tagged, c. should not get picked off at 3rd. The again, Theriot has a penchant for getting thrown out at 3rd, too.

I am totally serious about this, but why not bat Z ahead of TURD? Really? Not kidding. Z is a switch hitter and has more pop.

It's stupid, but I can also see Z being more comfortable with another Latin player (particularly a Venezuelan) in the infield.

i was just trying to screw around with cedeno's role on the team...didnt really research it or have great knowledge of it. heh...

I got it! There must be scouts in Wrigley to look at The TURD! Right??

Floyd at 2 again? I guess I'd rather see Theriot (obviously) or DeRosa (in today's lineup) at that spot. No Murt, No Riot - I guess the idea today is to put the ball in play and take advantage of Washington's atrocious D. I thought that was why they got Langerhans, but he's nowhere to be seen today. Go Cubbies!

First time Barrett's caught Z in a few starts. Let's hope things go better this time than last. If not, we may need to look at Blanco becoming Z's personal catcher. Btw, I'm guessing there's still no word on the contract situation. Looks like Z will be a free agent after all?

It doesn't make sense to me that not having Riot or Murt in the lineup signifies that you're trying to take advantage of Washington's subpar defense. They are two of the Cubs' better contact hitters, and Theriot would really add some pressure on the defense with his speed...

I guess I was just citing their above-average ability (for Cubs) to take a walk, that's all. I wasn't totally serious.

If we can go back in time and get the Izturis from 2004, then great!! I am all for him in the lineup then...if not, I'll take my chances with "The Riot"

Yeah, I wondered if you were serious. Small ball seems to me to be the way to win today... The lineup doesn't seem to mirror that.

maybe Dusty phoned in this lineup? I hear he does a terrific Lou impersonation. ...at least we can blame Barrett today.

I think it is mandated in Baseball's unspoken code that a competent manager cannot start Blanco and Izturis in the same lineup. I could fracture the atmosphere with a black-hole vortex of suck.

cubster, We can blame Barrett everyday. I see a blame Murton comming on as well.

#21 You can blame Barrett anytime he's on the 25-man roster, and for 6 mos. after he's off it.

ugh, Z

WOO Z!!! Blanco out with a herniated disc fwiw. whoever the new writer(s) are at Rotoworld, they make lots of mistakes. Called Carlos Victor Zambrano, bunch of other ones the last week or so.

carlos killing all the positive momentum from the road trip. thanks bud!

Let's face it, Zambrano is a very GOOD pitcher, but not Elite. He should be in the $12M range per year, ....which is far from the $15-17M range. That being said, the cubs will have dificulties signing him now that the discussed numbers have been in the $15M plus range to date. I would not suggest signing him for the $15M ballpark. ouch, i'd hate to lose him though.

Barrett needs to stop calling the gopher pitch!!! Everything has been up by Z so far. To be fair, the Nats have a great offense (pause) oh that's right, worst in baseball right now.

Something just isn't right with him. I'm not sure if he needs an MRI or a therapist, but he needs to get himself straightened out.

Is the contract talk bothering him? The guy is very tempermental.

nice play by Derosa for the DP, at least the D's been there today other than Floyd's RF adventure but that didn't even cost a base.

len just said on TV that stats inc. reports zombie has given up four in the first three times in his career - ALL THREE TIMES IN HIS LAST ELEVEN STARTS!!!

Is there any feeling worse than pulling up mlb Gameday and seeing the Cubs losing by 4 runs in the third inning to the NATIONALS? Z is apparently trying to avoid our record in one-run games.

Quick Poll- Z is bad today because- a) Injury b) Michael Barrett c) Contract Talks d) A fan has a shiny object in the stands

we are coming back vs. a guy who entered w/ .158 BA against! we're coming back vs. Jason Bergmann, let's put it in it's proper context.

Quade hand signals after the ARam collision... anyone read sign language? does it translate to you **** oaf?

Anyone else getting more comfortable with JJ staying out in CF? Pie probably already has his bags packed for the Guzman callup for Sunday.

had to be a hit and run, of course looked like Derosa snuck his hand in there before the tag but ball beat him easily.

Soriano hasn't looked comfortable running since he came back. Hopefully Lou will give him a few days off here and there so he can actually let his hammy heal.

Reliever David Aardsma (2-0) has an impressive 23 strikeouts in 15.2 innings, holding opponents to a .154 BAA. NICE MOVE HENDRY!!! ..again!

Reliever Neil Cotts has an impressive 0.00 ERA in 8.7 innings with 7 K's, holding opponents to a .138 BAA. Woo Hendry!

so does Kyle Tightpants... chicks dig the fastball?

seriously, wtf is with the Rotoworld writers these days? I'm going to write a strongly-worded letter. Despite his struggles in Triple-A, Angel Guzman will be recalled to start Sunday against the Cardinals. maybe they're talking about aug. 19th, next time we play the cards on a sunday.

Z had a 1.84 G/F ratio going into today I believe, haven't been paying close enough attention beyond the first to see how today is going. JJ's been raking it today, 2 deep flies and the double.

Yeah, JJ definitely had 3 deep fly balls, the shortest of which was his only hit. He also had a stellar catch in the first inning. Nice job by the Cubs to come back after a four-run deficit. That's something last year's team couldn't do. As for Z, it looks like his four-seamer just can't find the zone early on. He was throwing belt-high 88-mph gopher balls.

P.S. Meant to ask also if anyone else has noticed Z's arm angle being lower this year than last?

at least Z settled down after the first, might have one more inning in him although he's due up 2nd.

intersting note, WGN said Lee & Soriano have reached base safely in every game they've played this year.

Cotts up in the pen, I'm sure to make myself and vorare look bad from earlier in the comments.

One of the interesting things about Z is how he's gone from a pitcher that went back and forth from being a ground ball pitcher and a strikeout pitcher in 2003-4-5 to someone who is much less likely to throw GBs this season and last.

"cubfanbudman — May 4, 2007 @ 1:46 pm But Aardsma throws 100mph" So does Kyle Farnsworth

The trade has worked out so far. Aardsma: 2-0, 1.72 ERA, 23K/6BB Cotts: 0-0, 0.0 ERA, 7K/4BB.

rested bullpen, playing matchups I suppose didn't work, wuertz gave up a 2b, ohman now in bullpen doing their best to screw up again.

hope this doesn't go 20 innings...Lou burning through the bullpen with 4 this inning. At least we get The-RIOT in on the double switch

Ohman and that 60 foot curveball walking another...I'm ready to see Rapada

I know Lou was playing the percentages, but is there really a reason he couldn't trust Cotts (he of the 0.00 ERA) to face a few righties? Since when did Cotts go from long reliever to LOOGY?

Lou just trying to protect Cotts stats from deteriorating in the Aardsma comparison game...

Rapada in AAA right now 11.1 IP, 7 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB, 11 K, 5.56 ERA bring him in, stat.

So did Lou let Tony LaRussa manage the 7th, or does he just need to convince the higher ups that he really does need a 12 man pen?

OK, riddle me this: count is 3-1, runners on 1st and 2nd, DLee up next, why oh WHY is TheRiot swinging??? I like his game a lot, but that's just dumb.

I agree Garsky. I was hoping DLee would get one more shot at continuing his doubles streak since he had what looked like a sure double taken away earlier in the game.

theriot looked at one down the middle the pitch before, he got a good swing on it, just right at the CF.

I like this Dempster much better. Can we keep him if they find the one from last season?

Garsky, If Lou gives him the swing away sign then what do you want him to do? Take strike 2?

I hope the aliens that took the real Jason Marquis and Ryan Dempster, and replace them with ET's, do the same to Izzy .

He ripped a liner into center field on the 3-1 pitch and it was caught by Church. It was right down the middle and if it was a little left or right, it's a hit. Let's talk about Soriano striking out on a pitch that bounced in the left handed batter's box.

With Theriot hitting .333 I trust him enough to know when to hit a strike. If it was Izzy though....

Who says Spring Training doesn't matter? DLee is now hitting .422, which is about what he hit in S-T. Wow! Great win -- down 4-0 after one, then rally. Similiar to the BoSox last ngiht.

Who says Spring Training doesn’t matter? Ronny Cedeno? Cesar Izturis? Wade Miller?

And pending tonight's game, we will either be 4 games out of first or alone in second place.

D-Lee picking right up where he left off in 05 and last year before his injury. Prior to 05, Lee was a notorious slow starter with lousy Aprils and Mays, now all of a sudden he comes to the Cubs and he's a maniac the first quarter of the season. Hey, not complaining, but it's weird how he turned that around.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

  • Childersb3 (view)

Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.
