Tough Luck, Ticket-Holding Suckers

If you purchased tickets for any of next week's Cubs/Giants games so your kids could one day say they saw Randy Winn or Mark Sweeney playing leftfield, you may be screwed. Per the Commissioner by way of Phil Rogers in today's Tribune:
When Aaron was chasing Babe Ruth's record of 714, then-Commissioner Bowie Kuhn ordered the Atlanta Braves to play Aaron during a series in Cincinnati rather than hold him out so he could hit the record-breaker at home. Selig seems set to follow that precedent if the San Francisco Giants should sit Bonds during their upcoming trip to Chicago and Milwaukee. "Clubs are in pennant races now," Selig said. "I would hope that would be the overriding issue and factor. You want to try to win every game and play your best team. … I hope everybody uses good judgment. I believe they will."

even worse in that article... proposal to add more wild card teams.... although the proposal to make the first round a 7-game set I'm completely for....

The thing I wish they would do to the playoffs is get rid of all the travel days. It would be nice if the playoffs were a contest of teams that got you there, instead of 1-3 starters, 1-3 relievers and your starting 8 or 9. When your fourth and firth starters and bullpen depth become an issue again, I think we'll see less WC's and 83 win division champions in the World Series.

re: Jones. As we used to say in my Fantasy Baseball draft when a 'bidding war' errupted over end of the bench guy and it got to $4. 'You can have him, sir.'

That is cool. I especially like Izturis as the Cub least likely to swing and miss at a pitch. Oh, how we love his contact... Remember I am still donating $1 to TCR for each of his BBs.

Tickets are going to be quite hard to get around the league. As a Brewers fan, I know I know, I have heard it being difficult to get tickets to the last series we played against the Giants.

According to that site (from Real Neal), Rich Hill is the best fastball pitcher on the team. Hmmm. The player report cards are super cool.

Yeah, Wes. I went all the way through yesterday just accepting that I would have to wait until today for the Cubs to pick things up again... Then I got to work this morning and looked at the schedule... FRICK!

I second that Neal. At the very least they can eliminate that off days while the game is in each teams city. In a 2-3-2 seven game series. What sense does it make to take an off day between each game? If anything it makes the casual fan, without a particular rooting interest, totally un-interested. If they get back to playing a 7 game series in 9 days. Maybe the baseball season can end in October. Like God intended when he invented the game.

He'll sit once he clocks 754, even if it's in a first inning. He'll tie and break at home - that's a lock. IF there's a massive road trip after he's at 75 he MIGHT see a few games, but if he puts up 755 on the road, he'll get less ABs than Randy Messenger.

Ha, I love that Rich Hill has the lowest BAVG on his fastball after the conversation people just had. Obviously his fastball IS good enough.

Levine is saying 3 teams are interested in Izturis. He didnt say the teams, but I am postive they are the Nippon Ham Fighters, Yokohama BayStars, and Orix Buffaloes.

* At the very least they can eliminate that off days while the game is in each teams city. In a 2-3-2 seven game series. What sense does it make to take an off day between each game?* It's so the other game(s) on the schedule that day gets more viewers on TV. MLB can't have 3 games going on at the same time. *If they get back to playing a 7 game series in 9 days. Maybe the baseball season can end in October. Like God intended when he invented the game.* God obviously didn't intend there to be more than one WC team...or a 7 game series in the first or second round...or, heaven forbid, a NINE game series, which is the worst idea ever.

a 9 game WS is a terrible idea. However I am for any rule that helps pad the pockets of Scott Boras. Dude's gotta eat and all.

Let's not push the World Sereis to November. Chicago is very cold in November.

From earlier: I’m going to bring this up once, and then let the flaming begin. DFA Izturis, bring up Cedeno. 1)Izzy is a ZERO. He was a gold glove shortstop 3 years ago. He is not that player anymore. He is ballast…cannon fodder….zip, nada. .242/.291/.301. Yikes! 2)Cedeno is only 24. He is MASHING the ball at AAA. .383/.457/.611 at any level deserves a look. I am more impressed with 25 Walks to 24 Strikeouts. Bring him up, put him 2nd in the lineup, and tell him it’s his to lose, and to do exactly what he’s been doing at Iowa. Hit Fontenot/DeRosa 6th. 3) If Cedeno fizzles, go and get a SS, and use Theriot as a stopgap. Then trade Cedeno for a used jock. Also, bring up Soto and find Bowen a spot on the DL with back spasms or something.

If Levine isn't talking out his hoohah (toss-up at best) about having potential takers for Izturis, then DFA'ing him is the obvious wrong decision.

Both C and SS are black holes that need to be addressed at some point. It looks like we MIGHT have 2 viable in-house candidates to fill those voids. It only makes sense to give Soto and Cedeno an extended look now. If it looks like they can’t hack it. Then it’s something to fill in the offseason from outside the organization. If they can hack it. It’s 2 critical parts on the team that are filled with Minimum wage players.

more WC teams? oh hell no... yeah we got payroll dispertion issues...and if you're not BOS/NYY in the AL East you better have your luck/skill together...etc etc still, i dont wanna sit through 162 games over 1/2 year to see 1/2 of MLB waltz into the playoffs. no no no no... playoffs are a moneymaker, but lets at least keep a championship feel to the championships. anything can happen in the short series...162 games to take a chance on a 5-game series is a risk enough for a season... ugg. no thanks.

in playoffs you gotta have the travel days...premium ticket prices, special merchandise, and the national TV PR of having your team/players in their home stadium (and cheering crew). its one of those places where business and baseball have to have a middle ground, even at the expense of how to best/efficiently get it done.

what a find Real Neal, thanks.... I love Aramis, 2nd at chasing the most pitches out of the zone but 3rd least likely to swing and miss a pitch. It's like a little Vlad. 7-game first round however it is accomplished would make me happy. And there seem to be some extra days in the schedule now with the World Series having to start on a Tuesday. But hell no on more wild card teams.

the Twins talk about Jones is just Hunter endorsing bringing Jones back, that dont' mean much... With Neifi gone for awhile maybe Dombrowski can help us out again. :)

Rotoworld blurb says Boras and Arod won't negotiate an extension during the season and could be looking for $30 mil a year..... A nice twist to the Arod saga is if he opts out and goes on the free agent market rather than signing an extension, the Rangers are off the hook for their portion of the next 3 yrs of his deal.

More Wild Card Teams? Of course, how else would MLB make sure the Yankees are in the playoffs. According to the Sun Times Greg Couch "Cubs' bean counters are expected to meet in the next week or so to set a plan, set a framework " for the remainder of this season. Nice sense of urgency.

gallagher down hopefully... meh...who cares, really... it'd have to be a catcher going i imagine. wonder who's the odd man out.

Pretty much has to be Hill going down. Bowen probably couldn't make it through waivers.

from yahoo's news/note on mr. maddux... "Opponents are hitting .409 (18-for-44) against Maddux when he exceeds 75 pitches, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune." yow.

hill's been pretty consistant (but far from great) behind the plate...his bat quit showing promise long ago and his recent pro tryout isnt showing much.

Maddux is done after 75 - best sign yet he's more worried about golf than baseball these days.

yeah, but who would give Hill a major league job? Might as well stay with this organization that knows him and get a potential call back up. It's not like he's a defensive whiz or hitting anything that someone else is going to snatch him. He was a FA we grabbed in the offseason..

Baseball does not need to expand the number of playoff teams. To do so cheapens the value of the regular season. MLB has come close to the edge of making the regular season too cheap already with divisions and wild cards, but I'm an old codger who still fondly remember pre-1969 baseball with one pennant winner per league BTW, the World Series used to be best of nine ... no, I wasn't alive then. One sport which should expand playoff teams is basketball. The NCAA should throw everyone into the post-season, like in high school, and go from there. The NBA should shorten its season to 40-60 games and expand either the number of playoff teams and/or the length of the playoff series. The playoffs are the only thing worth watching anyway, and the TV ratings reflect it. College football should change its post-season format, too, and there's a way to do it where everyone makes an even bigger pile of money ... but that's enough on this topic for now. So, there's no End O' Story.

Might as well stay with this organization that knows him and get a potential call back up. Yea.. but with the Cubs he is probably #4 in the system, which is pretty bad for a "veteran." You have to place Blanco ahead of him, and I would rather have Bowen than Hill. And from what it looks like, Soto is a better player than Hill. I can see Hill getting a look from other teams as their #2/#3 catcher - which is probably better than what he is with the Cubs right now.

if k.hill leaves i doubt many would cry. bowen seems to have a job til he wears out his welcome or he breaks down. he was a target of a trade and makes pretty much nothing for the next couple years. soto's made himself interesting... hill just never got that bat going and his D was never that strong. at one time he was a semi-high-end line drive hitting catcher with average D.

"WTF? Anyone want an autographed Wrigley Field clubhouse urinal." Hey I'm a fancy baseball-playing millionaire, I need a urinal to go to the bathroom. I'm too good for a steel trough like everyone else at the stadium. I'll only micturate in a fancy porcelain urinal. God, pro athletes are so spoiled.

Yea.. but with the Cubs he is probably #4 in the system, which is pretty bad for a “veteran.” You have to place Blanco ahead of him, and I would rather have Bowen than Hill. And from what it looks like, Soto is a better player than Hill. Maybe, 'm kind of on the Blanco's not going to play again this year kick myself which means Koyie is one injury or slump from being back in the majors. I can't see him being any other teams #2 guy right now. Plus I think someone somewhere mentioned he loses money if he leaves the team, something about being on the 40-man, etc.

If he elects free agency, he will likely defer the decision until after the season. According to AZ Phil

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error?

Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?
