When You’ve Got Your Health, You’ve Got It All

Dr. Joseph Hecht gets us up to speed on the Cubs injury front... ------------- Mid July, a time to assess the walking wounded, and not all of them are even walking. Rotoworld.com has a nice link with all MLB players on the disabled list in a team-by-team format. Doing some simple math, here are the league leaders: Healthiest/Fewest players on the DL: Padres (1) Termel Sledge OF Diamondbacks (2): Randy Johnson SP, Jeff DaVanon OF Indians (2): David Delucci OF, Aaron Fultz RP 6 teams have 3 players on the DL including the Brewers (Bill Hall, Elmer Dessens, Corie Koskie), Red Sox (includes Matt Clement), Pirates, Rockies, Astros and Giants. Most Disabled: The KC Royals have ten and the A’s have nine. Next come the Cubs, Yankees, Mets, Marlins, Orioles and Nationals, all with eight on the DL. Of course some injuries are more devastating than others. Last year’s loss of Derrek Lee is the best example of that. Some are more dramatic, such as when Astro SS Adam Everett ran into Carlos Lee, breaking his leg. Other players almost live their careers on the DL. Yes there are non-Cubs who live on the DL such as Carl Pavano and AJ Burnett. Notables with ex-Cub connections that are on the DL include: Matt Clement (Red Sox), Moises Alou (Mets), Rondell White (Twins), Ricky Nolasco (Marlins), Steve Trachsel (Orioles), Freddie Bynum (Orioles), Todd Wellemeyer (Cardinals), Jon Lieber (Phillies), Tom Gordon (Phillies), Edward Campusano (Tigers), Micah Bowie (Nats) Cubs on the DL (with time to return estimates): Rocky Cherry—latissimus muscle strain (soon, on rehab assignment) Ryan Dempster—rib oblique muscle strain (1 week) Angel Guzman—medial forearm muscle strain (several weeks or longer) Henry Blanco—cervical disc herniation (7-10 days, surgery seems less likely) Wade Miller—thoracic muscle strain and previous shoulder labrum surgery (August, soon to resume rehab assignment) Kerry Wood—biceps tendonitis (early August, soon to begin rehab assignment) Roberto Novoa—scapula/shoulder fracture from car accident (September at soonest) Mark Prior—Bankart shoulder surgery (out for season) Considering our sorrows of 2006, even though our DL list is pretty full, it seems that we’ve done something different this year to survive the injury load. Maybe even Jim Hendry tired of waiting for his players to come off the DL. ------- The good doctor (known as Cubster in the comments) also breaks in this morning with a few more updates from this morning's papers.

Comments

DB: it is a repair of a detachment of the anterior (front) joint capsule of the shoulder. Credit for this type of repair should go to Perthes, but the popularity of the technique is due to the work of Bankart, (Bankart, 1923; Bankart, 1939) who first performed the operation in 1923 on one of his former house surgeons. Here's more history: http://tinyurl.com/34hkzs

Damn...this sounds cazreer ending. Has anyone ever come back from this type of surgery?

Has anyone ever come back from this type of surgery? ------- DB: Every surgery is a bit different so it's hard to say. The historical open Bankart procedure is now done through the arthroscope and there are better implants that anchor to bone but hold sutures so the soft tissures are reattached solidly. Chris Carpenter, Wade Miller and Angel Guzman had labral tears repaired which is a smaller tear (but still substantial). Apparently Priors shoulder also was very lax (loose) so the Bankart technique was used and should tighten it up. He's young enough to return but it's hard to say whether he'll be like old Prior or new Wade Miller.

Didn't Prior have more than just Bankart surgery? I thought he had his capsule repaired or repositioned or shrunk or airmailed to Mars or something.... and his rotator cuff debrided as well.

Interesting that 7 of 8 are pitchers. Then there's Blanco. In other words, there aren't any valuable position players on the DL (if I may be so bold as to call Blanco somewhat dispensable). Also, it says a lot about the Cubs 2007 pitching staff that they can quite ably survive the likes of Guzman and Dempster on the DL (to make no mention of W and P).

He’s young enough to return but it’s hard to say whether he’ll be like old Prior or new Wade Miller. ....................................................................................... Is it worth 3 mil to find out next year?

or airmailed to Mars... -------- Yes, airmailed to Mars is correct, but he's but still on the rehab launching pad in California at this point. --------- and Andy, I agree with you there. Don't forget to include Wade Miller on that list of non-valuables, it's doubtful we'll see him as a Cub unless he gets a magic velocity boost. Remember, in Spring Training he won the 5th starter position beating out Angel Guzman by a hair...it seems so long ago.

Just think how good our staff will be when W and P come back completely healthy!!!!!!

"Just think how good our staff will be when W and P come back completely healthy!!!!!!" Yeah, it's like making a major trade at the trading deadline.

aaronb: "Just think how good our staff will be when W and P come back completely healthy!!!!!!" Thank you for complying with the naming convention rule for two formerly highly-touted Cubs starting pitchers, who are constantly injured, and can be forgotten about until they next pitch in a Major League game during the regular season.

Regarding the Law article: what is the difference between a buyer and a strategic buyer? a seller and a strategic seller? isn't a seller someone who is buying for next yr or farther out? so is a strategic seller (Bluejays) someone who is buying for next yr but not farther out? Sort of like a stock analyst rankings? ...a hold is really a sell and a strong buy isn't a stock he would buy, but...

The funny thing about the cubs needs on the buyer seller list is this. They have ML ready players at each and every spot where need is identified. Rf- Murton C- Soto 2b- Patterson Is it better to get a rental piece? Is it better to go with your own kids? I personally would rather see the latter. At least until August.

If guys keep performing the way they are capable and the way they have been the Cub's don't really need anything. Scary.

Yes. Because when I want dependable production from a major league caliber 2B in September in a pennant race, I think of a Patterson.

Interesting that Law doesn't count DeRosa as a Right fielder or a second basemen. Why is it he doesn't have a job in baseball again?

Maybe I'm delusional, but isn't one of the guys they keep playing in RF someone they signed to play second, and they put him out there because Theriot or Fontenot are better offensive options than Jacque Jones or because Floyd keeps getting hurt? If they upgraded in RF (I have dreams about them snatching Griffey), they could move DeRosa back to 2nd most of the time, couldn't they? He does have an 823 OPS and a 369 OBP, not exactly a major hole in the lineup or in the field.

He also drops this gem about Donald Veal: Lefty Donald Veal, who has a plus fastball but a below-average breaking ball Unless you know, ask a scout, or watch him pitch. From BA's top tool list: Best Curveball Donald Veal

He also drops this gem about Donald Veal... ----- I thought Keith Law said he had ordered the Donald Veal for dinner recently at ESPN's Disney Resort

CUBS and LA: So do you West Coasters have a Cubs "tavern" you hang at? I mean - other than Montegna's "Chicago Tastes" in Burbank - is there a neighborhood (neighborhood?) bar in LA that likes to fly the "W" flag? As you guys know - one can certainly attend any number of "Big Ten" bars here to watch your favorite team...but I do not recall any bar that features Cubs games on the in-house monitors. If you know of any - I'd love to hear of it for my next trip out.

thats what i keep asking. Do we really need to do anything major? Yes another power bat would be nice, but at what cost? Theriot and Fontenot are playing solid baseball. DeRosa is playing a solid RF. I'd rather see us get rid of JJ and Floyd. Floyd is doing ok this year offensively, but his defense is horrible and it makes him very injury prone. I know he wanted to play for the Cubs cuz he's from Chicago, but he needs to face facts. He needs to be a DH somewhere. I don't mind him coming off the bench but any time he is in RF is more time than we should allow. Alas, for the time being it doesn't seem like we can move our dead weight. I guess we shall see, but I for one don't really want us to get a rental and lose any decent prospects.

Wade Miller, same old-same old... CHC LoA Miller, Wade ............. 3.0 4 2 2 0 5 6.00 - rehab start

AZ Phil: Are Donaldson's catching mechanics OK? He hasn't had any problem adapting from the aluminum bat. CHC SS Donaldson, Josh C .......... 3 2 2 2 .306 - HR (5), BB

Sheets to the DL according to rotoworld. Also funny how Law doesnt mention Centerfield, which is probably our biigest need, in his list.

Law doesn't mention CF or SS!! But he does mention 2b, where they have three good or decent options (DeRosa, Godenot, The Riot).

finger sprain at the Distal Interphalangeal Joint (knuckle just below the fingernail) = normally better in 2 weeks, given it's Ben Sheets...he should return about the same time as his soul mate KW.

WSCR - AM 670 reporting on the 330pm update that the Cubs are recalling Billy Petrick. No word on the corresponding roster move, yet.

LA CUB FANS: What is this place in Burbank that Chicagoans frequent? I live/work in Pasadena and I should check it out.... haven't met any Cub fans in LA over the past 1.5 years..

According to ESPN 1000 the line-up includes: C- Hill SS- Theriot CF-Jones RF-Ward Littlefield and Hendry are in some serious talks about Izturis.

George...someone already reported that the corresponding move to Petrick was Koyie Hill being DFA'd? (I think it was Tim Blackwell, of course it was awhile ago so there wasn't "official" word) http://tinyurl.com/27nca4

I think Aaronb makes an excellent point when looking at trade possibilities by 7/31. Is the price tag ($$$ and prospects) a better value at C, 2B, and RF than keeping DeRosa in RF 5 days/week, Fontenot/Theriot at 2B and recalling Cedeno to play 3-4/wk at SS with Theriot, and Soto at C? If the Cubs are going to non-tender Izturis after the season, why not cut him now if they can't find a low A pitcher in return for him? Who wouldn't love Griffey in RF - but if the cost is Pie, Veal, and Gallagher (or any comparable package of top prospects) plus taking on a good portion of his salary, is that the best short term and long term move for the Cubs?

C- Hill Interesting... someone said earlier that Hill was DFA'd. No source was provided though. And who is at 2b? I sure hope its DeRosa and not Godenot.

Thanks, Cubster.......I had read that as well but have been listening to sports radio while working today and hadn't heard any confirmation on Koyie Hill. I would think one of the catchers would have to be moved.

ESPN Radio just reported Bonds is not in the starting lineup tonight. Sucks for ESPN, who picked up tonight's game.

According to Levine Bondroids has been scratched from the lineup.

Bonds is afraid of Rich Hill. :) figures it would either be the Tigers, O's or Pirates who'd take Izturis off our hands. WTF are the Pirates going to do with Izturis?

Random... not really baseball related. But if you are ever wondering about ESPN's east coast bias, every national sports center update today on ESPN radio has talked about the Patriots and Ashanti Samuel, being that today was the deadline to reach a contract deal. But no (or at least none that I heard) mention was made of Lance Briggs.

If deal goes down with Pirates for Izzy, look for one of 2 options. 1. Izzy to the Pirates in exchange for Low A ball guy, cubs pay rest of contract save for ML minimum pro-ration. 2. Teams pull a mutual dump of Izzy for Jack Wilson. Contract money equals out ( more or less) for the 2 this year. Only Pirates are out after this year while cubs have 3 more years of Jack Izturis on the payroll going forward. If this is the case. Someone might want to drop Jimbo an E-Mail and tell him the 70's are over. It's ok to roster a SS who is able to hit.

It could be that everyone knows that the Bears and Briggs aren't even working on a long term deal and last week there was a story that the Pats and Samuel were

"What is this place in Burbank that Chicagoans frequent? I live/work in Pasadena and I should check it out..." It's Joe Montegna's place (I think his wife runs it) - "Chicago Tastes". My nephew, an actor says you can get a beef, or Vienna dog there. NO KETCHUP. ;-)

That should have read more like most people agree its a forgone conclusion. I didn't mean to sound like such a smart @#$ dave. I definitely think ESPN loves their east coast teams.

I hope that we do not get Wilson from the Pirates, because Cedeno won't be called up.

DAVE: Isn’t there a Red Sox-Yankees game they can get together? Ha... there is going to be an announcement shortly:
Due to the mysterious removal of Barry Bonds from the starting lineup in tonights Cubs/Giants game, ESPN will instead be doing a special look at the Yankees struggles this year, and it would means for the Red Sox.

jacos — July 16, 2007 @ 3:17 pm neifizzy for bay? ....................................................................... Don't I wish

Hey, we did get A-Ram and Kenny Lofton for Bobby Hill and a deep dish pizza. That worked out ok.

"It’s Joe Montegna’s place (I think his wife runs it) - “Chicago Tastes”. My nephew, an actor says you can get a beef, or Vienna dog there. NO KETCHUP. ;-)" Wait, they have places like that? I know there are a number of Cub fans in Seattle...anyone know a similar place here? You know, because the Fox Sports Bar kinda sucks.

I got it... How about Jock and Izzy for Bay. That seems fair - they get two players and we just get one. So maybe they get the better deal.

Yes - just hear it myself - Bruce Levine reporting that Hendry talking to Pitt. with "one scenario involving Cesar Itzturis". This is an exact quote. I can't imagine why. Jack Wilson is very cool. Who is their b.u.?

"How about Jock and Izzy for Bay." why stop there? We can add Eyre. Even Bowen. There! Four guys for one. That's good, right?

Jack Wilson is very cool. He might be very cool. But he isn't very good. He has a career line of: .264/.306/.367 He had one decent season (.308/.335/.459), which was still quite mediocre. And it was four years ago.

Bonds isnt playing because of "sore legs" AKA his leg bones cant handle all the muscle tissue the roids added.

only "Chicago" places I know in SoCal: Portabello's in Buena Park near Knott's Berry Farm (haven't actually been there) Tony's Little Italy in Placentia actually makes a pretty decent deep dish, only one I've found down here.

Jack Wilson is a pasty white Cesar Izturis clone. Only his contract stretches for 2 more guaranteed and a 1 more option year. Cesar Izturis was a mistake that will be gone after the year.

I actually wouldn't be surprised at all if Hendry is asking about Bay. Not for anything involving Izturis but for all the crap laid at Hendry he goes after what him and the manager feel they need. And they stated last week they wanted another power bat preferably a righty. Doesn't mean it will happen but I wouldn't be surprised if it's at least been asked about.

Bay would be awesome. What would it take? I would think it would start with Pie and a top pitching prospect.

There's Taste Chicago, probably what E-man is talking about but also TinHorn Flats in Burbank. http://www.yelp.com/biz/DuzxlYQxsUZ3bbhv9Og5Zg I'm not sure about that one, but about 10 yrs ago I went to some bar in Burbank that was all Chicago (particularly the Bears) all the time. I think that's the one.

Rob G I actually wouldn’t be surprised at all if Hendry is asking about Bay. Not for anything involving Izturis but for all the crap laid at Hendry he goes after what him and the manager feel they need. And they stated last week they wanted another power bat preferably a righty. Doesn’t mean it will happen but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s at least been asked about. ..................................................................................... As much crap as I give Hendry. If he were able to buy low on Bay and not give up too much. I would be really impressed. If Bay could be had for Pie + Veal or less. I think Hendry has done an excellent job.

well if it's Pie, it's not going to happen. Guess I wouldn't be surprised if Murton is involved, definitely a pitcher or two. Maybe Cedeno? This being the Pirates I think we can get away with Bay for Fontenot, Randy Wells and Les Walrond.

I really think we should unload Izzy for a prospect. I don't think adding another overpaid LF (Bay) that is not great will help the situation....

and let's not get out of control here, all I'm saying is I wouldn't be surprised if Hendry at least kicked the tires on Bay and if your're the Pirates, well you should listen to everything.

How sold are you on Pie as a prospect, Rob? Have we seen enough to KNOW he will pan out? He might be a guy who is at his peak value right now?

I would be shocked if Hendry could get Bay for Pie/Veal. His four-year, $18.25 million contract (through 2009) is incredibly affordable for what he brings to a team. Though with that said, his struggles this year have been quite odd, and a little worrisome.

and Bay has been dreadful this year, you can't give up too much for the fear he won't get any better.

Bay strikes out more than once every 4 ABs.... I would like to see the Cubs become MORE disciplines at the plate, not less.

me personally? Pie at the very least will be an average CF'er for the 5-6 years we have him with the potential to be a real superstar if his power shows up. So I'd prefer not to trade him unless it involves a player we'll have for a few years and you know will be good (Miguel Cabrera, Carl Crawford, etc.) Jason Bay doesn't fit that description to me. But what really matters is what the Cubs think of him and by all indications he's not going anywhere for anything.

I don't mind strikeouts if a guy walks. Bay has a .285 career average with a .380 career obp. I could deal with that out of our CF spot for the next 4 years!

I would like to see the Cubs become MORE disciplines at the plate, not less. Well... his career OBP is .380. I can handle a lot of strikeouts if he could rebound and get back to what he has done over the previous three years (.292/.389/.547), which is pretty damn good. Who knows... maybe Pitt is willing to trade Bay for nothing just like they did with A-Ram when he was struggling there.

If they the Pirates trade Bay for anything other than Murton + their favorite pitcher of ours, Hendry has my vote for President and the Pittsburg fans need to grab thier pitchforks and torches.

a lot of high strikeout guys take a lot of pitches and work the count. Bay is one of those guys although his BB rate has gone down this year for whatever reason and his strikeouts have gone up. But 95 and 102 bb's the 2 seasons prior and OBP of 402 and 396.

"Bay strikes out more than once every 4 ABs…. I would like to see the Cubs become MORE disciplines at the plate, not less." I think we disagree on what plate discipline means. Bay was 6th in walks in 2006 (102) and seventh in 2005 (95). His plate discipline is a great assuming this season is a fluke.

I could deal with that out of our CF spot for the next 4 years! I am not really sure that Bay is a ML CF. He more of a corner outfielder who can play CF if absolutely necessary.

Who knows… maybe Pitt is willing to trade Bay for nothing just like they did with A-Ram when he was struggling there. Dave, see comment #74 :)

that would be portillos in Buena Park, not portabellos um yeah, thnx. No idea where that came from..

But what really matters is what the Cubs think of him and by all indications he’s not going anywhere for anything. ......................................................................... Thing is, now that they have taken an extended look at him. We aren't certain what the organizational consensus is on him right now. He didnt play much the final month he was here. Obviously the organ-I-zation isnt going to slam him and kill his trade value. I just think that guys who don't control the strike zone have a MUCH higher flamout rate. And as we have all witnessed over the last few years. It's tough to score consistently as an offense. When you have a lineup full of guys who don't control the zone.

speaking of dreadful, bay batting 220/312/378 vs lefties this year top hitters vs lefties this year for the Pirates: Paulino 379/438/545 Nady 304/368/478 Sanchez 330/354/473 Wilson 277/364/462 Doumit 297/381/378 Nady wouldn't be bad, but if it's involving only Izturis, we're probably talking some scrub minor leaguer.

"It's an embarrassment for me to be wearing this (expletive deleted) uniform 'cause of the way I'm playing. There, that's it. Now go away," Bonds said at his locker. - That may be the first quote that made me like Bonds, ever. Z and I are still waiting for Bonds to teach Carlos some respect, by the way.

FYI, Tinhorn Flats is a Bears bar. Sure they are glad to have Cub fans or White Sox fans or Bulls Fans, but that is a place for DA BEARS! Also, Taste Chicago in Burbank is great for a Chicago style fix but they don't even have the Cubs games on there. For shame!!!!! They actually had a big to do when the Sox were in the Series and all these Johnny Come Latelys were there, like Bernie "The Jinx" Mac, Mishach "D list" Taylor and such. They even have white sox banners and such there. One day, I was really mad about it and I spoke the manager who is a good friend of Joe Mantegna's. I told her that stuff made it real hard for a cub fan to eat here anymore and that Joe should be ashamed of himself. She told me that she hated it too but they put it up there just cause it was a "Chicago" thing. I even said to here, "I mean Joe wrote Bleacher Bums!" They recently added a decent Chicago-style pizza there. Decent not good.

dave: Jack Wilson is very cool. He might be very cool. But he isn’t very good. He has a career line of: .264/.306/.367 Christ, not this again. This is the guy I see on the "web gems" on a weekly basis. But god, no his numbers don't pass the fantasy baseball acid test... he must suck. Tiring. Annoying. Simplistic. And Bay would be dreamy. But word of caution... with the Buc's he's a cleanup hitter, on any other team he's a #5 or #6 batter.

We aren’t certain what the organizational consensus is on him right now. Unless Lou said something crazy like he'll never amount to anything, I doubt much has changed. The kid's coachable, great D, nice swing, will probably develop some power and I think his plate discipline will be passable. He'll never walk 100 times but 50-60 a year won't be too bad. The K's will always be there though.

Rob, with all this Pie love, I had to go back and make sure he wasn't still on your fantasy team. He's not, so I believe your sincerity. Sorry for doubting you. I love Pie, but I would definitely trade his potential for Bay's.

yeah, Carlos made me do it too. He was suppose to deal me Billy Butler but backed out and Butler was supposed to go for Willingham.

Bay has played LF and DH this year. He is not a CF'er. I don't think he is much of an improvement over Jones/Floyd/Murton. That would just create even more of a logjam of LF's trying to play RF... I see no point.

Well it depends who we give up. Maybe we send them an OF'er from our stockpile as well as prospects. Like it's going to happen anyway...

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.
