Wood Kerrys On

For those of you not tired of reading about... Kerry Wood continued on his "Road to Wrigley" rehab odyssey this morning, throwing one inning (the top of the 1st) in the AZL Cubs versus the AZL Padres game at Fitch Park Field #3: 1.0 IP - 2 H - 1 R (1 ER) - 0 BB - 1 K - 1 WP 17 pitches (12 strikes, 5 balls) 1/1 GB/FB WOODY'S LOG: Jeudy Valdez batting Pitch 1: Ball One (fastball chin music high + inside) Pitch 2: Strike One - called Pitch 3: Strike Two - called Pitch 4: Strike Three - swinging foul tip One out Keoni Ruth batting Pitch 5: Strike One - foul Pitch 6: Strike Two - foul Pitch 7: Ball One (curve ball, low + outside) Pitch 8: Ball Two (curve ball, low + outside) Pitch 9: 6-3 ground out bouncer to shortstop Two outs Yefri Carvajal batting Pitch 10: Ball One (curve ball, high + inside) Pitch 11: Strike One - Foul Pitch 12: Long fly ball off left-centerfield fence. Double. Zachary Brown batting Pitch 13: Broken bat bloop single to CF, Carvajal scores from 2nd, throw home from CF cut-off by first-baseman. Edgar Garzon batting Pitch 14: Strike One - called Pitch 15: Strike Two - called Pitch 16: Ball One (curve in dirt) - WILD PITCH, Brown advances to 2nd Pitch 17: F-9 fly out to RF In his first rehab outing last Saturday, Woody threw 14 pitches while striking out the side. In both that outing and the one today, KW threw the ball free + easy with good velocity on his fastball. The only problem is he cannot seem to control his breaking ball.

AZ Phil, Was Darwin Barney playing today and how good did he look or did look if he spent any time in Mesa? Also was Mitch Canham playing for the Padres today, he looked like a better catching prospect than Donaldson coming out of college.

aaronb — July 17, 2007 @ 3:07 pm How soon until he moves up and does his Minor league tour? ========================= AARON B: Since he only needs to be able to throw one inning (or maybe occasionally two), I would say he is ready to start moving up the ladder very soon. His pitch count is up to 17, and he probably only needs to get it up to about 35 (tops). He could accomplish that in about another week to ten days. Once he gets command of his breaking ball, he should be ready to go, because his fastball has some definite zip on it right now, and he's throwing strikes. I don't know how his arm feels, but he sure isn't pitching like he has a sore shoulder, that's for dang sure.

Barney got promoted to Peoria. There's was a big shakeup in the Cubs system yesterday.

AZP: The only problem is he cannot seem to control his breaking ball. Wasn't that the problem in ST or am I thinking about MP?

Wasn’t that the problem in ST or am I thinking about MP? That is a pretty normal problem to have when a pitcher hasn't pitched in weeks/months.

chifan3887 — July 17, 2007 @ 3:08 pm AZ Phil, Was Darwin Barney playing today and how good did he look or did look if he spent any time in Mesa? Also was Mitch Canham playing for the Padres today, he looked like a better catching prospect than Donaldson coming out of college. ============================= CHIFAN: Mitch Canham isn't with the AZL Padres, he's playing for Eugene (NWL). As you probably know, the Cubs could have selected Canham, but opted to take Josh Donaldson instead. It will be interesting to see which one turns out to be the better choice. Donaldson hit five HR in his first ten games at Boise, so maybe the Cubs had the right idea. As for Darwin Barney, he got promoted from AZL Mesa to Peoria yesterday, and Tony Thomas got promoted to Boise. Jeffrey Rea was promoted from Mesa to Daytona on Sunday. Leon Johnson has also disappeared from Fitch Park, so I imagine he might have gotten promoted to Boise, Peoria, or Daytona, too, but they haven't announced anything yet.

tune in your internet radios: RYAN DEMPSTER starting tonight for IOWA. Scheduled to pitch one inning.

The first game going on for Iowa tonight is the suspended game from May 24th, which they are picking up in the 5th inning... This is interesting because several of these players that were in the game when it was suspended are no longer with the team... Fontenot and Hill are in the majors, and Chris Walker is in Tennessee, I guess as of yesterday... Anyone know how they deal with that?

Az. Phil- Leon Johnson sure looked ready to be promoted. Just going by stats, he was definitely a man among boys there. .433/.525/.701 13 SB in 14 attempts...

How is that too much information? "Three people (dead or alive) I would like to have dinner with: Tiger Woods, Jessica Simpson and Jesus" That's need-to-know shit!

Jace — July 17, 2007 @ 3:53 pm The first game going on for Iowa tonight is the suspended game from May 24th, which they are picking up in the 5th inning… This is interesting because several of these players that were in the game when it was suspended are no longer with the team… Fontenot and Hill are in the majors, and Chris Walker is in Tennessee, I guess as of yesterday… Anyone know how they deal with that? ======================= JACE: The players who are still on the Iowa roster who were in the lineup when the game was suspended take their own slots in the lineup, and the departed players can be replaced by anybody currently on the I-Cubs roster who is not already in the lineup for that game. Anybody who was in the game but was replaced (like via a pitching change) cannot be used.

Chris Walker was on first base when the game was suspended.... Obviously, you replace him with a PR, but does that count against your bench? How does that work?

Okay, thanks, Phil. So Cedeno probably replaces Fontenot, Kroeger probably takes Walker's spot and starts the game standing on first base, and, ummm... I don't klnow who replaces Hill... I can't even remember who the other catcher is in Iowa...

Jace — July 17, 2007 @ 3:57 pm Chris Walker was on first base when the game was suspended…. Obviously, you replace him with a PR, but does that count against your bench? How does that work? ======================= JACE: Yes. A player on the I-Cubs bench (somebody not already in the lineup or previously used in the game) will have to PR for Walker. I would guess Jorge Cortes or Matt Murton will be the PR, probably Cortes.

Hill has 2 doubles in this game... and he's not even here. It will become an official game today, so he'll get 2 doubles, 2 RBI's today, and he's not even there... This is fun!

Jace — July 17, 2007 @ 4:01 pm Okay, thanks, Phil. So Cedeno probably replaces Fontenot, Kroeger probably takes Walker’s spot and starts the game standing on first base, and, ummm… I don’t klnow who replaces Hill… I can’t even remember who the other catcher is in Iowa… ============================= JACE: Either Tony Richie or Chris Robinson can replace K. Hill.

Looks like they have put Bret Prinz as a PR for Walker, and Kroeger is PH for Webb...

Kroeger GIDP's to kill the longest rally I can remember... nearly 2 months long! They scored 5 runs in the top of the 5th...

JACE: Yes, that's really a long rally. I see they put 3rd stringer Mike Mahoney in as the catcher instead of Richie or Robinson.

OK. Here's evidence Geovany Soto is going down when Jason Kendall arrives. Chris Robinson has already been returned to AA. (INF Carlos Rojas gets promoted instead). "Hi, Chris! Welcome to Des Moines! Now go back to Tennessee."

Matt Murton's favorite TV show is "The Fresh Prince". that's a tough one to stomach, you can rot in Iowa for all I care now.

Now, that has got to be demoralizing... You'd think they would at least let him play today...

For those of you not tired of reading about… It's a lot easier when the Cubs have won 16 of the last 20.

Yeah, Rob... That is not the only thing that proved to be a little more information than I needed to know about him... Playing in Yankees Stadium??? He could have said literally anything else, and it would not have pissed (sorry E-man) me off more...

what's wrong with wanting to play in Yankee Stadium? it's a "baseball cathedral" (name the movie).

Gameday says that Cedeno is hitting .250, but his stats say he is hitting .364... Not sure what is going on there...

Jace — July 17, 2007 @ 4:29 pm Gameday says that Cedeno is hitting .250, but his stats say he is hitting .364… Not sure what is going on there… =========================== JACE: Would he have been hitting .250 back when the game was suspended?

Hi, Chris! Welcome to Des Moines! Now go back to Tennessee.” -------------------------------------------- He'll be using DHL....

Sorry, man. I love baseball, but I just despise all things Yankees... It really sticks in my craw when people talk about wanting to play there... Say Fenway... Say Wrigley (already done)... Say Olympic Stadium (yeah, right!)... just don't say f-ing Yankee's Stadium...

minor league standings: Iowa six games back of Nashville in the PCL American North (52-43) Tennessee a game back in the SL North (13-12) Daytona 3 games back in the FSL East (11-14) Peoria tied for first in the MID West (13-10) Boise in first in the NOR East (12-15) AZL Cubs 4 gmaes back (11-10) The Southern, Florida State and Midwest League have first and second half winners but no Cubs affiliates won their first halves.

Hard to believe the Hawks are in first with a 12-15 record... Now that they've been stocked a little more with 2007 draftees, they should be a bit better...

Rob G. — July 17, 2007 @ 4:40 pm minor league standings: Iowa six games back of Nashville in the PCL American North (52-43) Tennessee a game back in the SL North (13-12) Daytona 3 games back in the FSL East (11-14) Peoria tied for first in the MID West (13-10) Boise in first in the NOR East (12-15) AZL Cubs 4 gmaes back (11-10) ===================== ROB G: I was at the AZL Cubs gmae today.

That he lists Jessica Simpson before Jesus in a list of who he'd like to have dinner with is pretty funny. Not that I have any interest in having dinner with Jesus unless he's talking about my Latino neighbor who seems like a pretty nice guy.

Weather looks okay right now... AccuWeather.com is saying 40-50% of chance of rain this evening. Radar looks like we could get some rain, but it is not definitive.

Rob G. — July 17, 2007 @ 4:43 pm here’s a list of most of the moves over the last few days in the minors… http://cubs.scout.com/2/659222.html ============================= ROB G: Darwin Barwin obviously replaces Jonathan Mota at SS at Peoria, but the replacements for LF Alfred Joseph and CF Matt Camp (who got promoted to Daytona with Mota and Clevenger) would likely be Ty Wright (LF) and either Jonathan Wyatt or Leon Johnson (CF)--with Johnson going to Boise only if Wyatt goes to Peoria. Also not mentioned in the article is that Daytona LF Jesus Valdez has been released. (Valdez was a member of the FSL All-Star team just last month!). Why? He's a corner OF without speed or HR power and he has a below-average arm so he can only play LF. Ergo, a Class "A:" All-Star with zero future.

The tricky thing about having dinner with Jesus is that he's likely to speak Hebrew or Latin... alll you could really do is watch out for shady characters trying to poor him some wine. If it were '3 people you would like to have dinner on?', Simpson wouldn't make my list, but she may be a top 20 candidate. I think the Nelly costume almost makes up for the Fresh Prince... except that he probably really wanted to be Nelly.

The Real Neal — July 17, 2007 @ 4:57 pm The tricky thing about having dinner with Jesus is that he’s likely to speak Hebrew or Latin… alll you could really do is watch out for shady characters trying to poor him some wine. =========================== NEAL: Maybe he meant Jesus Reyes or Jesus Valdez. A lot of the younger players eat together during Spring Training.

The tricky thing about having dinner with Jesus is that he’s likely to speak Hebrew or Latin He almost assuredly did not speak Latin. And he probably also spoke Greek. Not that would help us too much.

|He’s a corner OF without speed or HR power and he has a below-average arm so he can only play LF. | I think you meant Matt Murton

Radar looks like we could get some rain, but it is not definitive. ---------------------------------------------------------------- I can hear Hughes now, "It's always nice to score early and have the lead in the 5th..."

Kendall at Wrigley and on the lineup card. Still don't know what # he's wearing. Theriot 6 Fontenot 4 Lee 3 Ramirez 5 Soriano 7 DeRosa 9 Kendall 2 Pagan 8 Marshall 1

"The tricky thing about having dinner with Jesus is that he’s likely to speak Hebrew or Latin…" I"m pretty sure he spoke Aramaic. "Passion of the Christ"?

Kendall waived no trade clause to come here. Has anyone refused trade to come here since McGriff? Dusty said on ESPN that he consulted with Aaron about going through the "stigma of being a black Cubs manager" and the racism that goes with it because of what he went through chasing Ruth. Just go away.

BTW, the outfielder Cubs Pacific Rim Scouting Coordinator Steve Wilson signed recently out of Taiwan (Chih-Hsiang Wen) who is now at AZL Mesa is probably one of the worst baseball players I have ever seen (and I am including every Little League team in my memory). He can't hit (he takes literally 95% of the pitches thrown to him, and whether they are balls or strikes, it doesn't matter), but he makes up for it by being unable to catch fly balls (he runs feverishly in circles, and then the ball drops twenty feet away in the opposite direction). If I didn't know better, I would say Steve Wilson has a really bizarre sense of humor.

Ill bet Jesus could speak English if he wanted. All those illegals can speak it if they want. They are just lazy.

Jesus Chad (again, no pun intended) do you not understand the difference between movies and reality? No don't answer, you've already proven that you don't. You probably think that Russian sub commanders speak English with a scottish accent. According to a web search, no one knows for sure what language Jesus spoke, but the the consensus is that he spoke Aramic, could understand Hebrew. He may have spoken Greek, but most likely understood Greek and Latin in a sort of merchants' lingo context. Either way, you're monkeys for arguing the point. If you want proof of the fact that Jesus was not the son of God, look no further than the fact that he couldn't master as many languages as the average Shawarma cook.

Neal an Atheist. Why am I not shocked? Also you're telling me that "The Passion" wasn't real? I'm pretty sure it was a documentary shot in real time. Or was that "Highlander"?

Yeah Mr. WHip they do. And they are the biggest most muscular ducks you have ever seen.

"Cubs Pacific Rim Scouting Coordinator Steve Wilson signed..." Is this the same Steve Wilson who pitched for the Cubs?

Ok here's the Jesus deal... Jesus' everyday language would have been Aramaic, which is very similar to Hebrew (both Semitic languages). He may have also understood Hebrew. When he was on the cross he quoted an Aramaic translation of a Psalm..."Eli Eli Lema Sabachtani" which means "My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me". In the Hebrew it would be "Eli Eli Lema Azavtani". (my transliteration). So there, Jesus spoke Aramaic. The Passion of the the Christ, on the other hand, was not based off of the bible, but off of a Medieval Catholic mystic's VISIONS of the crucifixion.

Tom C says: July 17th, 2007 at 11:25 pm Jesus spoke Armenian… ........................................................................................ He also was rumored to have trouble hitting off-speed breaking pitches

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

  • crunch (view)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.

The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!
