A little off topic, but this bugs me enough to want to post about it. Over the past few years, it has become fashionable among baseball media guys to talk about how shameful it was that media and fans buried their heads in the sand and ignored the “obvious” steroid crisis in 1998 and beyond. They said we — the fans, the media, etc. — were all clueless, or worse: enablers. Yet, over the past couple of weeks — beginning around the All Star Game in SF — the media has been swept back up in the baseball hype machine and re-buried its collective heads in the sand. Everywhere you turn, you hear “but he was a Hall of Famer before any of the accusations” or “it wasn’t even against the rules at the time” (even though meth and wife beating and mass murder and child molestation weren’t either) or “he has never failed a drug test.” It’s as if baseball is finally realizing that the record is going to be broken, and needs to come to terms with that fact in its own disfunctional, rationalized way. Even Peter Gammons is part of it. It’s disgusting.

On topic: Wells has had like a 2.50 ERA over his last five starts.

According to the chicagosports.com poll, more than twice as many people give credit to Piniella for the success of the rotation over Rothschild. I wonder what crunch voted for.

hour until game time and there's been no complaining about the lineup yet. Do you guys want to win or what?

Dammit, did Lou draw these names out of a hat or what? Put a real team out there for chrissake!

That's a hell of a lineup. Ehhh... I mean... this lineup sucks. =) As for the Cards... why isn't Pujols the cleanup hitter yet?

What the hell is the point of calling up Cedeno to sit on the bench? Where is the Fontenaught? I can't tell, is right field the stud pasture or the holding pen at the glue factory?

well, when your average start is only 3 innings, what's the difference?

Apparently, Jake Fox is up to fetch LouPA coffee...carry the heavy bags to the hotel, and to baby sit Rich Hill...that, or he's on the Ryan Theriot plan from last season...

What kind of stinky ass lineup is this? Where the hell is godenot? Etc etc.

This is probably our best lineup if we keep Murton in AAA. I'm not so sure Theriot is better than Cedeno, but that's fine. I'm still not a face of Fonte. DeRosa's better.

I hate the Cardinals. My Dad taught me from the first time I watched George Altman play to root for the Cubs and whoever is playing the Cardinals. Their fans make me want to upchuck.

I hate these set lineups...and Z needs to bat 8th, at least he's a switch hitter...and why isn't Fox in the lineup? Bitch, bitch, bitch...

Lee bats third right away coming off his suspension? He's going to struggle to adjust to the five game layoff!

Hope he didn't break it. A-Ram also creamed himself w/a foul to his knee.

root for the Cubs and whoever is playing the Cardinals. -------------- Good words to live by. Though my head explodes when the cards play the white sox. Fortunately that only happens every few years.

meanwhile back in Peoria Fort Wayne Top 5th Pitcher Change: Mr. W replaces Michael Bartek. Michael Campbell grounds out, pitcher W to first baseman Russell Canzler. Jodam Rivera walks. Jesus Lopez grounds out, shortstop Darwin Barney to first baseman Russell Canzler. Jodam Rivera to 2nd. Matt Stocco flies out to center fielder Leon Johnson.

Ronny says that The Riot was safe on the steal of second. And I quote - ahem: "Oh no. He was SAFE! Aw jeez. He was in there. He was safe. Aw jeez. He was in there, this shot shows it." (as if he was a TV announcer) Gotta love Santo

Ha Jumbo. Heard another Ronny Classic (tm) recently: [Hughes] ...lifts a fly ball to right, Floyd coming on, and he [Santo] AW GAAH, GEEZ COME ON! [Hughes] front of him [Santo] AAAW, GEE! [Hughes] the play.

A-RAM

If you have HBO watch Bob Costas show skewering Selig who sounds like a complete assclown. Selig said something like his beliefs on steroids doesnt matter. Your the f'ing comissioner. Stunning

why the hell wasn't molina thrown out. tony larussa gets waaaay too much leeway. nice job derosa, i mean, cedeno

Looks like Ronnie's already forgetting how to field after getting back on the MLB team.

anyone hear santo's choice of words when describing how izturis was released? he used the compound verb "got rid of" instead of traded or whatever. now, i realize that ronnie is no wordsmith, nevertheless, i found the choice of words telling.

wow, neither scoreboard operators nor tv truck guys can count in st louis color me unsurprised. lee! glad to have you back big boy.

wow, neither scoreboard operators nor tv truck guys can count in st louis color me unsurprised. lee! glad to have you back big boy.

Cy Z, 13-7

scoreboard operator can count, he just can't if there are more balls than his two toes welcome back to the bigs our ronnie cedeno with the deer in the headlights look (oh yeah, and he did get a big RBI hit) I hate it when Len says Pujols is 0-4 (after his 7th inning at bat) I love Theriot when he draws a walk late in the game, DLee welcome back...driving in the 4th run was tremendous some things never change, like a Ryan Dempster save...somewhere up in heaven, Rod Beck is smiling

Ludwick singled to Soriano who bobled the ball letting the pinch runner Ryan score (he had been held up at 3rd by the coach initially. Fortunately the bobble didn't let Ludwick go to 2nd...then as Rob said, Pujols 4-3.

So gameday just screwed up. I saw "ball in play, out(s)" and thought the game was over. Scared the crap out of me when I looked back a couple minutes later and saw Pujols up with a 1-1 count. Good win tonight.

Zambrano mostly just made me nervous tonight. He's the NL leader with 13 wins, but he's only been dominating in a handful of starts. I really thought he should have looked a lot better than Wells, but he didn't. Well hell, I'm a Cubs fan, I should take my wins however I can get 'em.

That Ump was squeezing both pitchers tonight, even Brenley mentioned that. That being said, Dempster with ice in his veins against the Big Poo. One of my favorite Dempster saves ever was when he got a white-hot Pujols to ground into a double play a couple of years ago to end a game.

Rotoworld says Young has a strained oblique. I wonder if its from the aftereffects of his World championship bout with Lee last month or if he was having "aggressive negotions" with Barrett on pitch selection. Either way I am sure everyone here (except for Rob) is happy to here the news.

Welcome back Dempster, we needed you. Now maybe Howry and Marmol can rest occasionally.

Well Wuertz is our 4th righty out of the pen, and probably 5th when Woody comes back so he is expendable if KW wants him.

Only the thought that Dye is likely to be a Type A free agent can make me agree to Wuertz for Dye. By the end of the season Wuertz is likely to be our #1 get us out of trouble guy.

KW really no leverage in trade talks, because he keeps running his mouth about how he is going to make changes. He is going to look stupid if that roster looks the same on 8/1. He also does not have the option holding on to his guys and getting picks because their farm system is bottom 5 in MLB due to bad drafting and trades. So please Kenny just shut up stop asking for guys like Derrick Turnbow.

problem is Dye might agree to arbitration.... I think Dye would slide into the Type A since it's based off the last 2 years but they did raise the standards on the other hand. I'd prefer to send them Rocky Cherry if at all possible or Juan Mateo or both over Wuertz. I'm also not exactly sure how much Dye improves the team unless he is willing to split time 50/50 with Floyd.

Dye improves the team because: A. He is a better OF than Floyd B. He is slugging the ball better this year than Floyd has. C. He is getting out of his 1st half funk, and could be a top 10 NL outfielder the rest of the way if a deal can be made.

Dye may be willing to do that. By all reports he's slipped defensively in right, but he would still represent an upgrade over Floyd. Of course the best fit for a platoon right fielder is still Sammy. Maybe Fitzpatrcik (is that the president?) will tell Hendry to get over himself and send Petrick to Texas for Senor Sosa.

" Of course the best fit for a platoon right fielder is still Sammy." I feel so very vindicated. Thank you.

as long as he doesn't cost us somebody I really care about, than a deal for Dye is fine by me. He certainly not going to hurt us. Guess I'm holding out for something more impactful, say Ken Griffey Jr.

KGJ and Sammy Sosa. Then one day put Jr in CF and Sammy in right. Most homers in an outfield ever, right?

Then one day put Jr in CF and Sammy in right. Most homers in an outfield ever, right? And the worst defensive outfield ever.

I'd have no problem with Dye playing RF the rest of the season for the Cubs - here's the highest price I would pay: Murton and Mateo ( and I would really prefer someone like Roquet or Atkins instead of Mateo). No way I give the Sox anyone off the 25 man roster.

I'd prefer to give Mateo...he's already been injury prone, and isn't going to be in the rotation this year, or next. I still really wouldn't want Dye....until Cliff ruptures a hamstring jogging out to left field...

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
