Cubs have $10,556,500 in draft pool money (and if they don't mind paying a a 75% tax on $527,825, they can go up to $11,084,325).
Players in bold have allegedly signed. Anyone after the 10th round signed for over $100K counts against their draft money.
If the player has yet to sign or there's no media report on the bonus, the third column is the recommened slot money.

CHARLIE: If a club exceeds it's Signing Bonus Pool by 5%, it loses a draft pick. So the Cubs can spend about $578K above its assigned SBP ($10,556M) and not lose a draft pick.
The #2 overall SBP valus is worth about $6.7M, so the Cubs could offer Bryant well over $7M and still not lose a draft pick if they were inclined to do so (presuming they did not go over their SBP in other rounds).
If the Cubs don't feel they are getting fair value offered back, they can always just hang onto Garza and Feldman and make them Qualifying Offers post-2013.
lovely, put up a post on potential trade candidates for Feldman and Garza and it hate the bulk of the text much like it does with some of the comments...sigh.
I don't know the numbers as they spent a quite a bit to land the 12th round pick Clifton (allegedly 3rd round money which is 500 to 750K) and anything over $100K counts against the cap.
But Boras represents Bryant and Appel and I doubt he'd let Bryant sign for more than Appel who got $6.35M and Bryant's slot # is $6.7M. So chances are Cubs are getting him under (rumors is around $5.6M). Gray signed for $4.8M which was $800K less than slot as well.
rosscup may not have impeccable control, and injuries have slowed him, but he's recently turned 25 and needs to get out of AA.
his numbers are nice, but it's hard to get excited about them when he's feasting on 21-24 year olds.
i'm a rosscup fan, and i'm ready for him to be challenged.
And Chris Rusin is probably the #1 LHSP in the PCL right now. He is #1 among all SP (LHP & RHP) in WHIP, and he is 5th among SP in ERA (behind LHPs Brad Mills and Will Smith and RHPs Johnny Hellweg and Sonny Gray). He has been a real workhorse, too, leading the PCL in IP. and he has allowed only 5 HR in 97 IP (pretty good for a SP in the PCL). And he's hitting 222 and hasn't struck out in 18 PA (he was a DH at the U. of Kentucky on days he wasn't pitching), so he would fit right into the Cubs starting rotation.
one problem is going to be a glut in available SP.
josh johnson and r.nolasco are strong candidates most likely to be available...along with a slew of others not so strong...then there's garza/feldman in the mix on the strong side.
teams like CIN, DET, and ATL are most likely not even going to be looking SP.
So, how much do we think they can spend on the 1st-rounder before they give up a draft pick then?
Rosscup and Burke--gotta figure at least one of them makes the 40. Lefties that through like that don't grow on trees. It'd be nice to see Burke developing a bit faster as a pitcher, though, and Rosscup being pushed a bit more.
LHP Zac Rosscup missed most of last season with biceps tendinitis, but once he got back into action he looked very good (his fastball was clocked at 94 MPH in his last appearance with the AZL Cubs before he was moved-up to Tennessee),
Rosscup, SS Arismendy Alcantara, OF Jae-Hoon Ha, and LHP (ex-OF) Kyler Burke are the Cubs minor leaguers most-likely to be added to the 40-man roster post-2013 (Rosscup, Alcantara, and Ha will be Rule 5 eligible, and Burke can be a minor league FA), although Rosscup, Burke, and Ha might have to show something in the AFL
If the other option is to get nothing for Feldman, then sure, talk with him about an extension. But if they can find a way to get a Maholm-esque return on him, I say pull the trigger.
I'm curious to see whether opposing GM's are still willing to part with any quality prospects for Garza after he missed nearly a year due to injuries. To me, you could make a stronger argument there that the Cubs might be better off extending than trading.
heh, I can't imagine a world where the Orioles would consider trading them both. I'm not sure they'd be willing to trade either of them unless they got a guy for more than a half a season.
rizzo sits tonight.
TEX has called up chirinininos today...
archer has had issues with control to the tune of barely being able to go 5 innings without throwing more than 100 pitches...AAA and especially majors where he's had a couple of 4ip outings. this season in the minors he's only gone over 5ip twice...both 6ip.
I'd probably hit that, but I don't love Gausman and the injury stuff with Bundy is definitely disheartening.
I got only 6. Sad considering I'm the commissioner of our local Pony league, and study the rulebook every year.

Crane Kenney nuggets in Sun Times
on Sat, 03/08/2008 - 12:36pm Permalink
Not available on the web but in today's paper:
-ISFA will make offer next week for Wrigley Field. Kenny hopes to have "framework for a transaction" by opening day.
-This would allow major renovation paid by trib, naming rights owner, new team owner and city. Which means Cub would be homeless for part of a season or whole season. They would play at US Cellular, although Sox not notified tough shit, ISFA owns that park too.
-Advantage of ISFA owning Cubs, more night games. Closer to league average of 54.
-Kenney does not expect Cubs sale to stretch into 2009, but the CUbs books have not been provided to approved potential buyers yet.
-Movie production of Cubs season will be filmed throughout the year. "We Believe;Chicago and its Cubs" should be ready for Sundance next year.
-Whatever the new name of stadium or renovation, Kenney said "we are not going to touch the existing scoreboard".\
jacos- But in Trib he mentioned they could change name on marquee in front due "to first ammendment"
-Two concerts this summer at Wrigley
And for Carlos-
Cubs plan on putting games on radio in Spanish though no deal through radio station has been made.
This from Gordon Wiitenmyer in todays' Sun times.

I was under the impression that the Cubs have always tried to play more night games but the city won't allow it.

That is true Chad, it has nothing to do with who owns the stadium, it has to do with Wrigeyville. I still haven't heard one good reason for the city to own Wrigley except it guarantees the team to stay there for 30 years since they are going to stronghold new owner into a 30 year lease.

That 'First Amendment' crap is nonsense. And apologies to all, but it's so horribly misused and misunderstood that it bugs me.
Cliff Notes: It's a FEDERAL issue. I don't think washington dc is going after the wrigley marquee (marquis?) - so the 1st amend. has nothing to do with anything.
It's your sign. You CAN do whatever you want with it, but the real question is SHOULD you?

Gibbon:
"It's your sign. You CAN do whatever you want with it, but the real question is SHOULD you?"
It isn't totally theirs. I think it is one of the things that is under historical status and thus needs approval from someone else, not sure if it is the City/State/Federal governments, to make changes.
The more Crane Kenney talks and acts like the new face of the Cubs, the more reason I see why the Trib was doing so bad.
Re: Marquee

you cant replace a doorknob at wrigley without the proper paperwork.
every tax advantage they take requires the proper paperwork. they're the ones that wanted the landmark status.
Re: Marquee
on Sat, 03/08/2008 - 5:16pm Permalink
That's exactly my point.
The advantages for landmark status demand cooperating with state agencies and restrictions inherent in the designation, but to claim some overarching federal mandate like 'free speech' is being impeded is the height of absurdity.
And I wasn't all that clear in my comments earlier - what I mean is, yes, they own the marquee and can do with it what they want (not entirely true I know as there are governmental issues) but should they (do they really want to set into motion the governmental dominoes that have to fall to alter signage?)
Re: Marquee

Kenney should just shut up and leave the 1st amendment interpretation to the lawyers. Oh wait. Aren't they the ones who misused it in the first place?

loober delivering with the 82-86mph HEAT!!!
great location for him early...impressive even if the velocity is (hopefully) still working its way up.
added bonus...he was throwing his sinker. he had almost abandoned it the past couple years. his sinker was at 82-84mph, though...

loober works 4 today...a little wild up in the inning, but got it done.
couldnt ARZ field some legit regulars today? wtf...
judging loober by things you should judge him by this early in spring...his slider and location...both are there and pretty advanced for this time of year. his velocity is working the low-mid 80s, though. as mentioned above he's breaking out his splitfinger...the first batter of the game got almost nothing but splitters.

Man, I hope he continues his success through the Spring. He had a real good performance again today 3.0 IP, 2 hits, 2 K, 0 BB, 0 ER. I hope Lou doesn't just give it to a "veteran" and push Marshall to the pen or AAA like he did last year. Marshall deserves a legit shot.

Early in the game Len or Bob mentioned Dempster was the #3 starter followed by Rich Hill at #4 with Lieber, Marshall, Marquis in a battle for the 5th.
Dont ask me how they came to that conclusion.

Bob also seems to be pretty sure howry isn't going to move out of his setup role. He did mention that howry is still in the competition for the mix, though.

Re:Crane Kenney nuggets in Sun Times

I posted this a couple of days ago but it makes more sense in this thread.
There's an interesting short piece on the state buying Wrigley Field in The Reader that came out today. Ben Joravsky, who has written a lot on Chicago's TIF (tax increment financing) says-
"Under the plan the state would issue bonds to pay for rebuilding Wrigley... Here's the tricky part: sales taxes going to the city would be frozen and any increase in revenues spurred by the renovation (including extra seats) would go to the state to repay the loans. 'The city would have to give up their share of the sales tax increment for the next 30 years,' Jim Thompson said."
A Joravsky correctly points out later in the article - money spent to refurbish Wrigley Field is money that can't be spent elsewhere. It's tied up in the park and will be slowly paid back from now until the year 2038. The needs of things like schools and parks will have to be payed for with money found elsewhere - probably through service cuts and tax hikes.
It's the same as so many companies these days who are supposedly free market concerns - they socialize their risk by using government dough. Nice work if you can get it...
