Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

(Yeah, that headline really happened)

The Sun-Times is reporting that Jim Hendry has been working the phones the last month with Billy Beane and the A's to try and pry Rich Harden from them. Of course, the A's are just four games back in the wild card and six back in the AL West and have one of the better run differentials in the league. So being a seller isn't necessarily a foregone conclusion, and don't be surprised if this rumor lasts until July 31st.

No names were mentioned, but you'd have to imagine that Beane would like somthing similar to the six for two swap he pulled for Dan Haren.

The article also states the Cubs are looking for a lefty for the bullpen with Eyre spending more time on the disabled list than the roster to this point and Neal Cotts being Neal Cotts.

Damn... I would love to see Harden on this team. I worry about the injuries, but the guy is one of the best in the game.

Of course... he is already coming close to his allotted annual innings, so we shall see.

I see the Cubs going for Marte on Pirates.

How long would Cubs have control of Harden's contract?

I see Hendry wanting to trade for Harden so they can hold onto him so they won't have to pay for Dempster this off season.

How long would Cubs have control of Harden's contract?

Thru 2009.
===============
Rich Harden 04/02/05: Signed four-year, $9 million contact w/2009 option ($1 million signing bonus). 2008: $4.5 million, 2009: $7 million club option (Arb. Eligible if declined), 2010: Free Agent

Rich Harden? Just say NO. Didn't the Wood-Prior years teach us anything?

of course it's a huge injury risk, but at least you have him for 1+ years and he's definitely the most talented pitcher that might be available.

But good chance it would cost 2 of Hill, Gallagher and  Marhsall plus some extra parts in the Epat, Murton, Donaldson, Veal type players.

Why do the Cubs keep these guys? To get to the world series some day, right? Pull the trigger, make it happen.

There are only a few I'd like to definitely see the Cubs hang on to: Veal, Samardjiza, Gallagher, and Pie; But you gotta give up something to get something. Murton? Please, take him so I can stop hearing about how Murton "isn't getting a fair shake" ugh.

If the Brewers CC deal happens you have to start wondering if a rotation upgrade is just a nice idea or necessity.

the Brewers deal happened, there was a press conference and everything.

On a side note, since Murton was mentioned, I'm sure happy we didn't trade Murton and a pitching prospect (and the Rangers insisted on) for Marlon Byrd this off season. Byrd is .238, .326, .371 this year in 52 games (151 ABs). And it would have surely prevented us from getting Reed Johnson when he became available.

I agree, but that says more about Marlon Byrd than it does Matt Murton.

Harden injured his shoulder April 15 of 2007. Then this year Joe Stiglich (InsideBayArea.com) said he had an injury to his right subscapularis muscle, located at the underside of the shoulder blade and stretching to the upper arm. It was so bad at first that he couldn't throw a ball at all.

Hendry better make sure he comes with a stack of towels.

so you're saying Rich Harden is an injury risk? Holy shit, who knew? Damn, hope someone tells Hendry.

fwiw, when pitching this year, Harden has a 2.34 ERA with a 10.75 K/9. And he's pretty much going with a 2-pitch repetoire right now of fastball/change with a very occassional slider thrown in...at least the starts I've watched.

yeezus, why do you insist on putting words in my mouth???

I must have missed the references here to his subscap injury which is different from his previous should problems. Sorry for being 3/44.

Oh, and thanks for the insider info on his ERA.

Who knew?

what's ERA?

Equal Rights Amendment?

Who knew Harden was socially active 85 years ago?!

I like your joke, but the Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in the 1970's and ultimately defeated in 1982. 85 years ago would be approximately the time of the 19th Amendment (passed in 1920 -- 88 years ago), which gave women the right to vote in the U.S.

I majored in History in college. Couldn't help myself.

Well... it was actually proposed in 1923 (source).

:)

True enough. I withdraw my objection and move it be stricken from the record.
~sheepish grin~

So that means Harden will make a great closer someday?

Or he will be a vagina :)

I'd have no problems trading away a bunch of our young talent to get Harden. Might take a pretty serious package of our farm guys to get him, though. He's about as good as it gets. I worry about the injuries, but if he just gets me through the '08 playoffs, that'd be unbelieveable.

We'd have the best 1, 2, 3 punch of any of the contenders currently going. Thinking about Z, him, and Dempster in a playoff series is giving ME a Harden. (see what I did there, Rob? OMFG! I JUST PWN3D!!! LOLLERSKATES!1!one!1!!!! 1!1 ROFLCOPTER!1!!eleven!!)

well-played sir, well-played

may I inquire about Lollerskates?

is this an original or something sweeping the Internet nation?

Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

*groan* lol Nice one, Robg.

Will Hendry be all randy for Wolf next week?

Any news on the Brian Roberts trade?

How about the bidding for Jason Schmidt while we're at it?

I know it's not spring, but how about Adam Dunn?

If Murton gets traded, Dr. Aaron B will be mired in a lengthy depression...

Prozac in his future?

Oh well. he is cheaper than Marquis...

The Churchill referred to there runs prospectinsider.com and was all over the Bedard deal, so it's not completely from left field....maybe right.

Pull out all the stops as far as trading the farm for Harden or even Tim Hudson if ATL puts him on the market....

One untouchable...Josh Vitters. Other than him, trade whoever they want.

I keep hearing that Toronto will listen to offers for Halladay, though they aren't actively shopping him.

depends where you heard it and from whom. if i heard it from my mother. i would laugh it off.

cant believe that we got harden so quickly, but i wanted to keep gallagher though

It's done

  • Please do not discuss War here. I think the Cub Reporter should be politics free.

But yes, whether you support War or Peace...Mike Trout is ridiculously consistent and good.

  • "According to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi, Tim Tebow's baseball workout Tuesday in Los Angeles will be attended by scouts from "roughly half" of the 30 major league teams."

"One scout told ESPN.com last week that Tebow's swing is so long it might "take out the front row." That's not a good thing."

  • CF WAR is ridiculous...billy hamilton is pulling a 3.0 WAR somehow...and managed a 2.0 WAR last year (even though he missed a month of the season)...and a 3.7 WAR in 2014.

yeah, a lot depends on how one is doing relative to others at a given position, but WAR is common used (right or wrong) as a blanket comparing all kinds of players.

trout's one of the best, and at this point should probably win over donaldson (and should have more MVPs in the past, too), but the defensive aspect of valuing WAR still needs more tweaking...imo.

  • 2nd in defensive WAR, NL.

    6th in NL in RBI

Go complain about something else, like, "they never play good against the good teams", or some other shit.

  • Addy really has trouble breaking through .250 BA -- after his hot streak got him to .251, he has gone 1-for-17.

  • There seems to be a direct correlation with overconfidence in the Cubs offense against mediocre/young pitchers and really poor offense against mediocre/young pitchers. So, let's fear the Pirate pitchers!

  • Rough 8th inning all around -- HBP, Cahill error, Javy's poor decision.

Oh well - given that the Cubs didn't look like they were going to score, it's better to lose in 9 innings, save the bullpen and get changed for the PJ trip home.

  • heyward with his 3rd multi-hit game since the all-star break (all in august)...2nd in the past 3 games during his 7 game hitting streak.

he's gone from flirting with a sub-.300 ob% to nearing .310 ob% in 3 games (1 game was just a 1 for 1 pinch hit appearance). all 5 hits in the past 3 games have come in a row...neat.
