Re: 3 Days Rest, Other Notes

• About the business of our pitchers starting on three days rest: Z was right--except for taking the mound August 23rd against the Giants right after the 8/19 rainout against the Cardinals, he has never done it. Lilly has done it once in his career (4 1/3 IP, 7H, 2 ER). And Trachsel has done it five times (1-3, 6.04, 6 HR allowed in 28 1/3 innings), but not since 2000, when he was 29-year-old Steve Trachsel. • In his MLB Power Rankings published Monday, the Tribune’s Phil Rogers had the Cubs 9th among all MLB teams—six spots in front of the Brewers and seven spots ahead of the Dodgers—though heading into Monday’s game, the Cubs had the 9th best record in the National League. • Though the Cub defense has been a bit wobbly lately, for the season the Cubs and Mets are solidly atop the rest of the National League in Defensive Efficiency (turning batted balls into outs). I know there are more relevant things to be talking about just now, but in case things don't go well over the next 19 games, I'm going to need something to cling to. • Your wife may be mad at you, your kids may not respect you, and your boss may wonder why you're still on the payroll, but take heart. John McDonough is very proud of you.

Never mind 3 Million, how in the name of God can the Yankees not get 4 Million ? They should be able get 4.6 Million with their capacity (57,000+). Also, if the Red Sox sold out all of their games like Red Sox Nation allegedly claims then they would be in the 3 Million club as well. I ain't sayin', I'm just sayin'...

John McDonough should be proud of me. I have much better hair than he does.

And because my 1 chin is better looking than any of Jim Hendry's

Uncle Wink: "Also, if the Red Sox sold out all of their games like Red Sox Nation allegedly claims then they would be in the 3 Million club as well." Fenway seats 35,692 (day games) or 36,108 (night games). They have had 70 home games, so how should they be over 3,000,000? In fact, even if they had all night games and sold every game out they would only get to 2,924,748.

"Fenway seats 35,692 (day games) or 36,108 (night games)." I'm sure you're right on this one, but explain...

If I remember correctly, Fenway has a relatively large standing room only area and I believe that the fire code limits how many folks they can pack in there based on the time of day. But I couldn't find any confirmation of that anywhere online.

Fenway's capacity is over 38,000. Closer to 39,000 for nightgames.

Hello? That means they can sell more than 3,000,000 seats.

The current capacity of Fenway Park is 36,108 for night games and 35,692 for day games.

aaronb- CWTP knows the capacity of Fenway better than the Red Sox do, don't question him....:)

"If I remember correctly, Fenway has a relatively large standing room only area and I believe that the fire code limits how many folks they can pack in there based on the time of day. But I couldn’t find any confirmation of that anywhere online." This may 100% true. I have no reason to doubt this. HOWEVER, this is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You're telling me that time of day makes for a greater/lesser fire risk?

Little known fact: there is a giant concave mirror in the right-field seats at Fenway. It seats just over 300 people, but it's not used for day games because the focused beam of sunlight it creates would fry everyone sitting there.

It may have something to do with the 85% of the world that works during the day. The other 15 muth#%@uc*ing percent come out to day baseball. The Changes in the Red Sox organization are MULTI-FOLD. Take that down town. AND PRINT IT!!!

Are they not counting the club seats for some reason? Very strange. The Boston Globe reported that capacity was increasing to around 38,808 this April.

with all the talk of wrigley needing a new home, im surprised they keep dumping loot into that rat-infested disease hole in boston. yes, the bathrooms in wrigley are WELL beyond any upgrade you can think of and the ladies' room...well...im glad i'm not one when im at wrigley. still, they've crammed just about every inch of space at fenway into a conglomerate of uncomfortable seats in every free inch of space they can find over the past many years. cubs started their "squeeze" at wrigley...got a needed new bleacher outta it and destroyed some of the foul ground (pitchers hated that). fenway's run outta space to exploit, though. time to get a new stadium in rsox land...some modern concessions, too. wrigley bought itself a couple decades (maybe) with its expansion.

aaronb- CWTP knows the capacity of Fenway better than the Red Sox do, don’t question him….:) What a jerkoff remark from TCR's biggest crybaby whiner. VERY CLASSY as you would say. I'm going to be generous. Your/the confusion seems to be over the definition of SEATING versus capacity. This article says the Red Sox can sell up to 38,805 tickets. "Sox make more upgrades are made at Fenway Source: Boston Globe | Date: Jan 25, 2007 | By: Gordon Edes ...long-suffering class of Fenway occupants -- the ushers...help one understand why some Fenway ushers were more likely to...Sox to increase the legal capacity of the ballpark (not the same as seating capacity) to 38,805, with the..." Yes, how stupid it is not to believe what's written on the Red Sox own site, mannytrillo. News 2007 returned 13 result(s) • | April 04, 2007 | Sox set to unveil Fenway renovations attention. Senior vice president of planning and development Janet Marie Smith said that by Tuesday, paperwork certifying Fenway Park for a capacity of 38,805 this season, up from 37,654 in 2006, should be in place."If all goes as planned, next year will be the last set of [seating] http://mlb.mlb.com/searchGlobalSearchServlet?club=bos&search_mode=1&sea…

its hard being a misunderstood victim surrounded by dumbasses, eh cwtp? just how to you put up with all of us incompetent people? someone get this guy a commemorative plaque or a medal or something. cheer up dude, this may be your Vietnam, but you'll get your parade dammit.

I am all for a Wrigley renovation. I went to St. Louis' new park and could get used to creature comforts like....... elbow room that a new or updated Wrigley would provide.

In light of some comments made by some posters concerning an increase in Cub fans since 2003, I would like to suggest two nicknames for those types of fans 1. Bartfans This is obviously a reference to Steve Bartman and since being a nuevo fan is generally looked down upon, these two thing s go hand in hand. or 2. 5 outers This if yet another obvious reference to the 2003 NLCS as that's how close we were to the World Series. it is also a play on poker jargon. Thoughts?

DAMMIT! I make a fun post that I wanted feedback from and it goes to moderation!!! THIS BLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!

CWTP: "Hello? That means they (Red Sox) can sell more than 3,000,000 seats." "Your/the confusion seems to be over the definition of SEATING versus capacity. This article says the Red Sox can sell up to 38,805 tickets." You didn't say tickets or capacity in the first comment in post #10 you said "seats". Maybe you are the one confused.

Red Sox fans are just imitation Cubs fans.

And my thoughts Chad are that both are lame...

"They don’t make them like they used to." I get your point, but notwithstanding the fact that any person who can throw a baseball at 100 mph is a genetic freak by definition, Ryan was a genuine freak of nature all the same. Aside from Clemens, when was the last pitcher able to throw in the mid to upper 90's like Ryan could, even into his 40's, and for more than 7 innings per start?

Wasn't Bartman a season ticket holder? He was keeping score of the game and listening to it on the radio, hardly a "nuevo fan" who I would charactize as drunk guy trying to get on tv and/or picking up girls.

Agree with Rob. Chad - those are quite lame.

jacos, the point was not that Steve Bartman was a bandwagon fan. The point is that he was the center of negativity during the period of time in which this new style fan was formed.

neifi perez would be proud...tor gives j.mcdonald 2yr/3.8m extension.

You should name them after the guy who ran on the field to punch Randy Meyers. And he's the same guy who does the "It Gonna Happen" signs. Two strikes against him right there.

Wow, how can a person, after reading this: "Also, if the Red Sox sold out all of their games like Red Sox Nation allegedly claims then they would be in the 3 Million club as well." write this: "Fenway seats 35,692 (day games) or 36,108 (night games). They have had 70 home games, so how should they be over 3,000,000? In fact, even if they had all night games and sold every game out they would only get to 2,924,748." & this: "CWTP knows the capacity of Fenway better than the Red Sox do, don’t question him….:)" Get proven wrong with this: "April 04, 2007 | Sox set to unveil Fenway renovations attention. Senior vice president of planning and development Janet Marie Smith said that by Tuesday, paperwork certifying Fenway Park for a capacity of 38,805 this season, up from 37,654 in 2006, should be in place.”If all goes as planned, next year will be the last set of [seating]" And finally retreat to this: "You didn’t say tickets or capacity in the first comment in post #10 you said “seats”. Maybe you are the one confused." ????? Only Manny Trillo. Wow. God is that the weakest retreat I've ever seen: "Oh, uh, I thought we were talking about seats and not capacity." Unbelievable. I want to assure the others here that I'm not "CWTP".

Well that excellent move by the master of GM's (JP Ricciardi) almost rivals his non-signs of Delgado, Carpenter and Escobar which didnt return a drop of a pee!! He's still got his job, how bout that.

just how to you(sic) put up with all of us incompetent people? I don't recall addressing a post to you in this thread. What incompetent people are you talking about crunch, besides yourself?

#42 Please kill me now.....I was praying he was getting canned after this year, or midway through next year. I don't know if I can take much more of that overrated blowhard

Only Manny Trillo. Wow. God is that the weakest retreat I’ve ever seen ----------------------------- Definitely very lame.... but of course, a simple "looks like I may have been wrong" is completely out of the question.

What incompetent people are you talking about crunch, besides yourself? Said by the same guy who thought Bowen came from the Iowa Cubs... Just saying...

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

  • crunch (view)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.
