Game 150 Thread / Cubs @ Cards (4 of 4)

Game Chat : BR Preview : Game Notes Jason Marquis vs. Mark Mulder Lineups:
A. Soriano LF A. Miles 2B
M. DeRosa 2B R. Ankiel RF
D. Lee 1B A. Pujols 1B
A. Ramirez 3B J. Edmonds CF
M. Murton RF R. Ludwick LF
C. Monroe CF S. Spiezo 3B
G. Soto C Y. Molina C
R. Cedeno SS M. Mulder P
J. Marquis P B. Ryan 2B
Mulder is coming off two brutal starts following his return from the Disabled List. This past Tuesday, the Reds tagged him for seven hits and seven runs (two unearned) in just four innings...which was arguably better than his earlier start against the Pirates--eight hits and six runs allowed, also in four innings. Lifetime, the lefty is 2-3 against the Cubs, but has given up 54 hits in just 42 2/3 IP. Derrek Lee hasn't just hit Mulder hard, he has savaged him: 11-for-15 with a homer, five RBI and a 1.698 OPS. Cub starter Marquis, who has been better this year at Wrigley than on the road, is following a not-so-good no-decision against the Astros. Right before that, however, he had consecutive strong outings against Houston and the Dodgers. Marquis is 2-1 against his former teammates this season, including a sterling 7-inning, no-walk, no-runs-allowed start back in April. Jason, I think we'll take one of those, if you don't mind.

Well, there's real hope that Cincy can win today in Milwaukee. It's Belisle vs Vilanueva. Matt Belisle has been significantly better on the road (5-1 4.40 away) than at home while Vilanueva (4.96 ERA at home) has done better on the road. Of course most of Vilanueva's stats come from relief appearances. He's been much better in his three starts. So, it's really a question of which Vilanueva shows up today. Reds @ Brewers just about to start now. GO REDS!!

Oh yeah, a few minutes ago the Reds announcers said that Cincy BUSES the club up to Chicago. Is that right?? They don't fly? or were they just being flip.

Really, all the MLB teams bus between Milwaukee and Chicago? What's the mileage cutoff between flying and driving between cities?

Bases loaded, no outs = no runs. Why does it seem that the Cubs have the same killer instinct as PETA.

Agreed adrosen. That was a miserable performance by Ramirez who refused to walk. Soriano who just stood at third base watching the slow grounder. And Murton who went from a 3-0 count to hitting a double play ball to end the inning. Should have scored two at least.

it takes longer to deal with the airports and fly between Milwaukee and Chicago than to drive. It's a 90 minute drive.

3 for 3 so far CLEARLY--the Biggest mistake the Cubs have made this year was not bringing Soto up a couple months ago and letting him play. Instead we got a College of Catchers this year.

Brewers pouring it on in the fifth. 5-0 now. This game is now another one of those "must-wins" for the Cubs.

Marquis pitching in the 6th with very large stones. Those deep fouls to LF corner from Pujols warrant an underwear change Nice job. No runs.

CUBS WIN!!! CUBS WIN!!! Unfortunately, so did MIL. Still all tied up in the all important loss column and both team controls their own destiny with 14 days to go (or maybe 15 if things stay the same). Go Cubs!!!

it takes longer to deal with the airports and fly between Milwaukee and Chicago than to drive. It’s a 90 minute drive. I commute by air between Santa Barbara and Burbank.. 89 miles. It beats driving.

I commute by air between Santa Barbara and Burbank.. 89 miles. It beats driving. I believe most MLB teams do not fly from LA to San Diego either. cwtp...not sure what your point is. Apples and Orange Countys?

I commute by air between Santa Barbara and Burbank.. 89 miles. It beats driving. First off... the drive from Burbank to Santa Barbara is different than the drive from Chicago to Milwaukee. Second... there is a big difference between driving yourself 90 miles and taking a bus 90 miles where someone else drives.

never been to Santa Barbara airport but Burbank is a breeze to get in and out of... On the other hand, O'Hare is not.

Another reason to hate Roy Oswalt. From yahoo sports: Sep 17 Oswalt's scheduled start on Wednesday will be pushed back due to the pending birth of his second child, the Associated Press reports. Recommendation: He's tentatively slated to go on Saturday in St. Louis.

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.
