Is Today the Day?

The day that will forever be branded into our memories like a Rick Sutcliffe fastball blown by a helpless Joe Orsulak - followed by a leaping Jim Frey as he rushed onto the field tucking his cap into those classic 1984 away pullover jerseys. Maybe it'll be like 1989, with the tying run less than 90 feet away, the Wild Thing saves the day yet again in dramatic fashion versus an overmatched Mike Fitzgerald. And while the play-in game in 1998 was tense enough, there stands a good chance that if we do clinch tonight it'll be similar to waiting around for Neifi Perez to beat the Giants in game 162 rather than a glorious Cubs victory being the defining moment. And the last 3 games for the Northsiders were certainly an unfortunate bump in what will hopefully be an ever-growing road to the promised land, but the Cubs played 156 games before the Marlins series that put them in the position to sustain a pothole or two. And the Cubs might just back into a Central crown or they may win the next 3 games by a combined score of 35-3, just as long as they're playing on Wednesday. Random ranting after the jump.... - For the most part I think Lou has done a bang-up job as manager this year and I do my best not to get too nit-picky about each and every decision. The job of a manager is a series of scenarios where the majority of decisions are choosing between heads or tails and then being roasted for choosing heads although it was clear to the thousand of armchair managers that tails was going to win out this time. It takes a long history of buffoonery before I get too uptight about the manager but yesterday's decision to start Steve Trachsel has got me riled up. Rich Hill had pitched Saturday and could have easily gone on his normal 4 days rest, instead he's being pushed back until Saturday. For a manager who has managed all season like there's no tomorrow and that one win now means one less win needed later, the decision is essentially mind-boggling. You throw your best available pitcher and worry about Saturday when Saturday arrives. We very well could have clinched by that point making a Tracshel or Marshall start utterly meaningless. - You think the Cubs were bad the last 3 games, how about 5 errors in possibly the most crucial game of the year? On top of that, one of the guys you traded away to help fix your bullpen mess, gets your best hitter out representing the winning run at the time, while your bullpen continues to be a mess. And your manager was suspended for a possible bean-ball Code Red the day before? We might have Cubbery, what would you call the Brewers the last few days? (I guess Brewery) - For those worried about the Cubs "backing into the playoffs", let's not forget the 2005 White Sox and 2006 Cardinals. Just get to the dance and see what happens. The Cubs still hold one of the best records in the majors since June 1st(61-46) with only the Yankees, Rockies and Phils I believe doing any better. Yes, it's pretty much an arbitrary cutoff, but it does indicate some good baseball over a sustained period of time.

Never mind, you're just talking about Ward out through Sunday, not off the playoff roster. It's more an opportunity for Pie and Fuld to pinch hit early and Fontenot later.

With Ward out for the weekend, once again there will be enough left for the rookies to get some of the clubhouse spread. Let the kids build up some strength for the playoffs... We like the strat- e- gery, Lou.

1998...When we all loved Neifi. Lets get it done tonight- From espn.com- "Aaron Harang, who starts Saturday for Cincinnati, has a career record of 8-2 against the Cubs. Padres starter Greg Maddux, who pitches Friday night in Milwaukee, is 14-6 against the Brewers"

yeah, ward's 1-3ab's will be much appreciated by the cubs non-playing youth...well, fontenot at least...

What do you mean, that video is relevant, Rob G. It has the Cubs are tied with the Astros 4-4. And the Mets lost to the Braves...Was there something else about it aside from the scrolling scores in the video that I should have been paying attention to? Because the scroll is about the only thing I watch now.

I saw that news video this morning, Rob. Really terrific stuff, that one. Don't worry Mr./Ms. Director, the angry phone call is not far away.

Ward gets injured breathing if he has to be on the field. Incredible. Fucking A. Such a good PH. No one talks about him much as a good JH signing, for $1MM. I hope Murton (yeah, alright, he's playing pretty well) gets all of the starts over Capt. Do-Nothing Monroe.

Such a good PH. No one talks about him much as a good JH signing, for $1MM. Yea... forgot him on the "good things Hendry has done" list. But Murton/Monroe's playing time has little/nothing to do with Ward's injury. Ward plays against RHP, Muton/Monroe play against LHP (for the most part).

There's a joke lurking somewhere in the request that I only give postdictions......

"breakdown of potential tie-break scenarios" Great for migraine triggers.

Just getting ready to post that Rob. The funny part was that MLB had to do a whole bunch of coin flips Thursday just in case some "unforeseen scenarios" happen.

ROB G: I have an advanced Editing student this semester (Avid/Final Cut) who is taking my sound editing class. HE really wants to apprentice up to work for a company editing trailers, if you can believe this. He has Cub everything on when he comes into lab. Should I tell him that LA embraces hard-working Chicagoans? Or, to just forget it and get a real job?

MANNY: "The funny part was that MLB had to do a whole bunch of coin flips Thursday just in case some “unforeseen scenarios” happen." It is pretty comical now, MANNY! Geez! I can't wait to see where all this stuff is on Monday! Let's HOPE that the Cubs are out of ALL the tie-breaker stuff. PLEASE!

The Cubs will clinch tonight... mainly because i'm sitting on the edge of my chair in the office ready to high-tail my way 4 blocks to GABP. Anyone who wants to join me in dumping beer on each other to celebrate can find me in the rightfield corner sundeck in a ratty blue Cubs had and sweatshirt...

Let’s HOPE that the Cubs are out of ALL the tie-breaker stuff. PLEASE! You didn't wish that on a monkey's paw, did you? Because you have to be reeeeal specific with a monkey's paw.

Should I tell him that LA embraces hard-working Chicagoans? Or, to just forget it and get a real job? Oh lord, I hope you tell all of your students to take a shot at the job they want. (okay, well all the good ones) Yeah plenty of work for the hard-working and non-stupid people in this town. Plenty of work for the stupid and lazy people actually too.

Thanks. Really great to hear that. In fact, I tell them about the LA nepotism, and that many people who have industry jobs there may not be as qualified or smart enough to do them (I have heard this too many times from my ex-patriot Chi-town folks). I do encourage them to give it a shot and let them know that if they carry teir work ethic to the West, they'll find a gig (as you say - the good ones). I have a former student just started at New Line, last week doing archiving, for example.

Hey, what can I say? ... Chicks dig the long ball. That's why I jack 'em out. Yesterday, if that was another stadium... I'd have another one.

Rob we all watch Entourage, we know Cameron quit Aquaman after the first one. That's one of the big reasons why Vinny Chase quit too.

he's coming back for Aquaman 3, hated what Michael Bay did with Aquaman 2, trying to restore the franchise. I get the seasons in advance remember.

too bad Miggy is a poor excuse for a SS anymore otherwise I'd love that deal.

sure

tejada's SS days should be numbered. he's too tall, too slow, and his range has shunk severely. i bet he'll make a nice 3rd baseman for one of the LA teams...hell, he'd make a nice 3rd for yanks/bos depending on the arod/lowell situations, but BAL making a trade of that scale with NYY/BOS? hmm...

I think it's weird that he's seen such a dramatic dropoff in his range. It's not like he's old now. Baseball Cube has him at 31. Not nearly as old as I thought. I guess he is little bigger than he used to be.

I gave up on the Cubs in early June like I never had in my adult life. It was at the point that I honestly stopped checking the scoreboard, I just didn't care...honestly, I felt relieved that I wouldn't have to waste another summer watching day, by day, by day, hanging on each of 250 pitches a game. I thought to myself "It's just not worth it, it's just a game that I have no control over" It took thi September to remind me again why this is oh so worth it. There is nothing like this that brings a city and community together...even when they live 3,000 miles away away from each other. We get to share these moments forever. We will never forget '84, '89, '98, '03 and now '07. Sure, we want even more wonderful memories and the ultimate goal is yet to be had. But, we won't forget this, we won't forget this summer. Thanks to all of you for providing a place to share the fun despite living in Los Angeles where few share our joy. Thanks for reminding me what being a Cubs fan, through good times, and bad times means.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.
