On Rich Harden Debut Eve, the Cubs have made a roster move as they open a three-game set against the Giants.

Michael Wuertz, who allowed four runs in an inning-and-one-third against the Reds on Thursday, was sent down to Iowa. Kevin Hart, 2-1, 3.35 for the I-Cubs with 48 K's against 15 BB and a BAA of just .205, gets the call-up.

As for today's game, the Cubs hope to avenge last week's series split in San Francisco. (Normally, "avenge" would be too strong a word when you're coming off a split, but considering how miserably the Giants have played at home this year, I figured the Cubs were at least owed 3-of-4.)

The pitching matchup is a repeat of the pairing from the game played a week ago Tuesday, which the Giants won, 2-1. Marquis steadied himself after a bumpy first inning, allowing just four hits and two runs over 7 IP. Cain, however, was flat-out brilliant, shutting out the Cubs for 8 innings, while fanning 10 and allowing 2 piddly hits, which is one hit less than the Cubs collected in a ninth-inning rally against Giants closer Brian Wilson which fell just short.

In the ultimate test of his flyball-catching skills, Reed Johnson gets to play centerfield between Mark DeRosa and Daryle Ward, as Jim Edmonds and Kosuke Fukudome, who is hitting .238 since June 1st and striking out like a sonofagun, get to rest.

I wonder who would win a footrace between Soto and Ward? The play at the plate where Ward wheezed home last week and was tagged out, made me shake my head and roll the eyes.

Is Lou's idea to just keep playing Soto until he passes out behind the plate?. I know the kid's young and full of energy, but for Pete's sake, use your backup once a while. It's probably going to be over 100 degrees on the field by mid - game; sheesh.

I agree that Soto needs a bit more rest, but he has to be treated not just like a catcher, but a star of this team. If it was Paul Bako back there, I'm sure Blanco would be catching at least twice a week. Since it's not Paul Bako, but instead is a key part of our offense, Soto's going to get the vast majority of ABs. Geo might not be Ivan Rodriguez, but playing almost every day was ok with him: Pudge age 24: 153 games (career high) All Star, Silver Slugger Pudge age 25: 150 games All Star, Silver Slugger Pudge age 26: 145 games All Star, Silver Slugger Johnny Bench once played in 160 games. Holy shit.

So Wuertz is only being used once a week (shockingly, he'd doesn't perform well in his rusty state), the Cubs have 13 pitchers on the roster, and so they replaced him with another pitcher? Does this mean Hoffpauir the new Murton?

Len Kaspar just said, I think incorrectly, that Matt Murton is starting for the A's AAA franchise. Not so. EPatt was added to AAA Sacramento (and played 2B for the River Cats last night) but Matt Murton hasn't played for them and doesn't appear on their roster. Rumor is he may get a temporary assignment with the A's this weekend. As of the moment, Murt doesn't show up on any active roster I've looked at.

Buster Olney says MATT MURTON &/or HUSTON STREET may be on their way to the Rays (or Padres). Supposedly Street has cleaned out his locker and as I posted, Murt isn't on an active roster as I write.

If the opening bid is $300 a seat that is outrageous. Those seats are no better than those Dugout box seats they started last year that are $ 300 a seat and they want us to seat in the CBOE for that just to put a bid in! You would think with HDTV and surrond sound units the way they are now, ticket prices would drop because unless you have a seat within the first 10 rows of either behind home or the dugouts you have a better view on TV than you do sitting in the park.

Jon Lieber! Setting up! At 82 mph! Blogger in questions that Lieber should do it because Howry's on the downhill side of his career: "I think that, at 34, he's just not setup material anymore... At this point, his numbers land him in the 6th-7th inning" Yet Lieber, at age 38 IS setup material. Awesome stuff. Remarkable.

Although Aaron Cook ( a sinkerballer on 3-day rest) and Dan Haren (4-days rest) could also be considred candidates. Also Rothschild would prefer that Demp not pitch in the game, but he still wants to do it. Personally, I think they should just let Marshall pitch on Sunday since as odd as it might be to say, Tuesday's Exhibition game is a 100x more imporant to this team than Sunday's regular season game due to homefield advantage for the World Series being on the online in the ASG. Of course with the Weather projections of a 80% chance of rain tommorrow with strong T-storms throughout the day tomorrow it wouldn't be shocking if Harden is scratched for Marshall tomorrow and Harden goes on Sunday.

Lou would definitely use his backup catcher, if he had one who could hit. Wait till September, when Welington Castillo gets called up.

Also, keep an eye out for Blake Lalli.

Hey, cousin, how are you? I like Hill, as you know, and he seems to settle down a team when he catches--Iowa (.608) has a better winning pct. than Chicago (.602)--but I wouldn't describe him as a catcher who can hit, although he's been hitting lately. He's a lot like Blanco, except that he can step into the other batter's box. Castillo is in the all-star Futures game, tomorrow (Sunday) I think. A couple of other recent tidings about organizational catchers: last night, in the resumption of a game that had been suspended with Peoria down 6-1, the Chiefs tied the game in the 9th on a Luis Bautista HR and won in extras. And Blake Lalli doubled and drove in a run in a Smokies game where he pitched a scoreless ninth, with two Ks. When was the last time you saw DH-P after a hitter's name in a box score? Talk about a triple threat, he catches, too.

i also would agree that marshall should be pitching on sunday dempster pitched last tuesday give him a inning on tuesday then start him on the following sunday. i would think 13 pitchers even after lou said he would like another outfielder on team means it is time to showcase some one again by trading a pitcher for a hitter backup outfielder type . any ideas who?

    i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

    there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

    I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

    I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…


    Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

    They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

    I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

    Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error? 

     

    Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

     

    Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

    i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

    i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!
