TCR Friday Notes

So little to talk about.... - The Denver Post gives more credence to the Kaz Matsui rumors, saying the Cubs might go three years on a contract and covet Kaz's speed and (pardon my insensitivity here) Japanese-ness. As reader "The Joe" pointed out, signing Kaz might help sway other Japanese players to sign with the Cubs, most notably Fukudome. The same blurb suggest the Rockies might look at Michael Barrett for catching duties if Torrealba walks. -  The Cubs sale inches along ever so slowly and nothing is expected to be finalized until sometime in 2008. Besides the FCC issues, Trib and Zell haven't decided whether Wrigley will be part of the deal or not. The article does say only five groups have even been approved by MLB to view Trib's books and they are: John Canning, Mark Cuban, the Ricketts Family of Ohio, and two groups I hadn't even heard of: a partnership of attorney Thomas Mandler and businessman Jim Anixter and a group headed by MVC Capital Chairman Michael Tokarz. - Yahoo Japan is supposedly reporting that lefty reliever Hitoki Iwase has received both a one year and multi-years offers from his current Japanese team, the Chunichi Dragos. Iwase was on the the three Japanese ballplayer that the Cubs apparently covet but like Fukudome has yet to apply for free agency in the States. That article could actually be telling us that Godzilla is planning to attack New York in the next week for all I know, but that's what mlbtraderumors.com got out of the translation. And sadly, that's all the news that's fit to print...

Sounds like Matsui would be playing Jack Haley to Fukudome's Dennis Rodman. Of course, the Bulls never actually had to let Haley get into a game. Regarding the ownership groups, Jim Anixter and his family were hot for the Cubs back when Wrigley sold to the Trib. I have seen him listed as an interested party previously. Sounds like he and Mandler are pooling resources.

Wasting time, effort and money trying to land the dubious Fuku-sui duo...... bleh!

stop it with this matsui joke already....we all know hendry likes weak hitting 2Bs, but this one has to be made up. please?

"Of course, the Bulls never actually had to let Haley get into a game." I saw him in one game, in-person. A cheer went up in a comical way.

its not like hendry has a lot to do...almost all of the team is set aside from a few deck chairs that need rearranging and a RF'r....maybe a replacement arm for k.wood if he doesnt sign. i guess hendry could just throw 12+m at guillen from seattle, 4-5m to wood, and call it an offseason in november.

what a boring week sports week in general...here I am waiting to take a peek at TCR's Friday Notes and there's nothing to get excited about... couldn't you guys make up some minor rumor just to stir the pot?

...on a contract and covet Kaz’s speed and (pardon my insensitivity here) Japanese-ness. ======= Can't we just bring back Yosh Kawano to get the same "impact" without hurting the roster?

The last pro Chicago team with a Matsui won a championship. Of course, back then, it was just spelled Matt Suey.

*its not like hendry has a lot to do…almost all of the team is set aside from a few deck chairs that need rearranging and a RF’r….maybe a replacement arm for k.wood if he doesnt sign.* Thus approached, the Cubs chances depend on Lee returning to his pre-injury form [not likely], Lilly having another near-year, Soto somehow staying producing at a near impossible rate, Murton somehow learning how to hit, Ward not ballooning into a 400 lb pinch-hitter, Theriot continuing to put up Kaz Matsui-ish numbers for far less money and A-Ram continuing to hit his usual 30/100? All while hoping the rest of the NL Central continues to stink? Nice plan. *i guess hendry could just throw 12+m at guillen from seattle, 4-5m to wood, and call it an offseason in november. * Guillen? And some people think A-Rod is a clubhouse cancer? At least A-Rod's not yet been linked to 'roids.

"...then, it was just spelled Matt Suey." Didn't you run this by us before, or am I thinking of someone else? I wish the Bears had Suhey now, in his prime.

evidently my "plan" of staying put..which i never advocated...was torn down. followed by the tearing down of the following statement which was a proposal of a plan that doesnt involve staying put being torn down... i cant win, huh? *picks up hey in his car* we're far off course, dude...check out the map, to get to the point i was making we got a long drive in the other direction. pack a snack.

evidently, unless i live in a dream world where advocating arod/cabrerra are positives, even if not realistic, i'm "on the outside." excuse me for talking about things with a probability of actually happening rather than lamenting why the cubs dont wanna get rid of their 30HR 3rd baseman making 1/2 the pay arod will to get an extra couple dozen walks and 10-20 more homers. and yeah...cabrerra is still fat, lazy, and not much of an option for RF no matter how many warm fuzzies anyone gets from thinking about him. sorry...this team doesnt have a 150m payroll and my expectations of moves fit the notion that this team has 20-ish million to spend at best. also, i dont think the team is gonna somehow dump 20-30m in contracts like some videogame. this is just the world im working with, here and the same one a lotta others are working with, too.

I don't recall ever making that Matsui joke, sorry if I have. Murton can't hit? Huh? He hits fine by me when he gets regular PAs. More power would be nice but I could say that about a lot of Cubs.

Me and someone named . G3ekGir1 got the 44th best score of the day on the google pics. That's when I got bored. Guillen's a particularly bad idea. May as well just bring back Floyd. The Yankees sports writers think that Tejada can be had pretty cheaply. Hopefully McPhail is high on some of our prospects and we can swing that trade without really hurting the ML roster.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7424366 some info on the potential Japanese imports... scouting report on Fukudome.. "Smooth line-drive swing, no hitches, squares up on the ball really good, great eye at the plate. He doesn't have the natural loft to hit home runs in American parks, but he's got plenty of gap-to-gap power. He'll hit a lot of doubles and get on base. He's definitely going to be an asset." Says he can play all 3 OF positions but best suited for the corner spots.. on Kuroda... An international scout tells us that Kuroda throws four pitches for strikes and is good at working low in the zone. However, he has the tendency to rely too much on his fastball, and that will need to change if he's to survive in the States. Our scout says he can be "a capable fourth starter but not much more than that." Still, plenty of teams can use help at the back of the rotation, and one team's fourth starter could be another's ace. Kuroda already said he'd prefer to play on the West Coast as well...

Just so long as he can catch the ball. Matsui made a shit load of errors at short in 2004. Arod, who can't play short anymore, only made 8 his last year at short, 2003. Matsui gets really good range numbers at both positions according to BP. Tejada can't play short anymore according to BP, but Theriot never could.

Silver Slugger Awards announced, no Cubs... AL Ortiz Posada Pena Polanco Arod Jeter Vlad Ordonez Ichiro NL Martin Fielder Utley Wright Rollins Holliday Beltran C. Lee M. Owings

Ramirez robbed again. outslugged Wright and nearly matched his counting stats in 30 less games.

Rob G- How is Fukudome's speed? Otherwise he sounds like a Japanese Mark Grace. Which would be good for this lineup.

and damn Chad, what are you looking at? Wright +41 Runs Scored Wright +4 Homers Wright +6 RBI's Wright +34 SB's Wright +15 pts of BA Wright +49 pts of OBP Wright -3 pts of SLG in a friendlier pitcher's park In year-end awards, staying healthy should not be a demerit.

Wright +41 Runs Scored - Got me here. But 30 more games for Aram and that number would even out a bit. Wright +4 Homers - 30 less games Wright +6 RBI’s - 30 less games Wright +34 SB’s - Sliver Slugger award Wright +15 pts of BA - Not a counting stat Wright +49 pts of OBP - Not a counting stat Wright -3 pts of SLG in a friendlier pitcher’s park - friendlier pitchers....yawn But, hey, if you want to say Chipper or Cabrera deserved it more, fine. I wouldn't complain about those guys.

"nearly matched his counting stats" I'm sorry. Too broad of a generalization. I should have said nearly matched homers and RBIs.

well not that I care about stolen bases but Rollins and Ichiro won if you didn't notice, stolen bases are generally considered part of the offensive game. And as I said, you shouldn't get rewarded for missing games or knocked for playing the whole season. If you're using counting stats, then stick with counting games as well.

re: Arod and SS... yeah right. k, im done. let's see what the rest of MLB does with it.

ichiro winning a SECOND silver slugger speaks enough about the thinking that goes into that award.

crunch breaking out the Chadian logic... The rest of baseball thinks that a team with Arod at short will win more games than another team with identicle talent but Matt Suhey at short. Even Billy Beane will tell you that.

Matsui still hasn't figured out how to backhand grounders yet and he might be at SS? Something about that doesn't smell fresh.

John DeWan's stat of the week covers how good Soriano's throwing arm is...(what a great term: baserunner kills; a runner thrown out without a relay) http://actasports.com/sows.php in 2006: 15 baserunner kills lead the majors (next was CMonroe and Ibanez with 10) in 2007: 19 baserunner kills (next was JBay with 7) I didn't know Monroe had a throwing arm...did we ever see it this year?

"The rest of baseball thinks that a team with Arod at short will..." who is even looking at the 32 year old 6'4" arod to move back to SS? im yet to hear a single word from any team's talk (aside from local sportswriters musing out loud) targeting Arod for SS. in fact, ive heard a lot more about teams pursuing him kicking around the logistics of moving their incumbent players to make room for Arod at 3rd. hell, the angels...who have like...2-3 "name brand" 3rd prospects arent making much noise about putting Arod at SS where they are actually weak.

"Arod at SS where they are actually weak." Their SS won a gold glove, and has a big contract and they have no real third basemen. Dodgers - Shortstop no third basemen Angels - Shorstop no third basemen Red Sox - No shortstop or third basemen, rumors of him playing short for them, I can find you a link if you need Cubs - Rumors of him playing short, no rumors of him replacign Aram, unless you count your own Giants - Third basemen and shortstop, no mention of what position they're looking at Arod for Mets - Third basemen and shortstop Marlins - Shorstop no third basemen, if they trade fatboy The guy is one of the top handful of athletes in the world. If Ripken can play a decent shorstop until he was 36, what makes you think that Arod can't?

I forgot Detroit. They had no SS when they were rumored to be interested in Aram, but had a 3rd basemen.

"identicle" Spelling does not count and I am not call you out for this. But this misspelling was so funny for, what i believe, should be obvious reasons.

Yeah, once again when looking at whether to go after A-Rod, I really feel it should be a "sign him and figure it out later" philosophy. That's it.

"If Ripken can play a decent shorstop until he was 36, what makes you think that Arod can’t?" it dont matter what ripken did or what i think. the market is making no noise about anyone wanting arod as a SS solution. and looking at how slowed on reaction arod has been the past couple years at 3rd i personally doubt a move back to SS where he'd have a lot more motion to put together plays would be something pretty. of course, there are worse SS's out there who hit less than he does...but they dont come with 26-30m 5-10 year contracts.

the problem with signing someone and figuring it out later is this...how do you sell a contract to a player/agent with "we just want you around, we'll figure out where you play later." throw enough money at it and you'd get arod, though. okay...cubs did that, they got arod. the world rejoices and he's gonna play SS. sweet. arod for a number of reasons cant play SS...not a candidate for 2nd cuz its not gonna be his arm that's the problem if there is one... now you gotta figure out who's gonna get displaced...and chances are anyone Arod would displace would also require the person he displaced to have to find another player to replace. you can only sign so many of these "find out later" types and when you're paying high-end IF'r money for it that's another consideration. a chunk of his value goes beyond his bat. if he was a LF'r/1st no one would be talking 30m contracts most likely.

my guess, fwiw, Arod 8/200 or he goes back to the Yanks for one year and arbitration.

I agree crunch. But, in negotiating, you feel him out about his feelings about different positions, the go from there. There is only one best player in the game right now. It is A-Rod. You are not making a habit of this. You are just signing the best player in baseball. You don't pass it up because you are unsure of what to do with him if you get him.

my big hangup on the "sign him and play him" pretty much is based on the money for arod. i mean, if we were talking 5m, 10m, whatever... its just the scale of devotion taking on arod means. even at its best you're talking 1/4th of the cubs payroll. for a lot of other teams it could be up to or nearly 1/3rd of their current payrolls. they took the position with soriano last year...i still think he should be in RF with his arm, but whatever. its their call.

"the market is making no noise about anyone wanting arod as a SS solution." I hadn't realized you sat in so many of the teams' organizational meetings over the last month, my mistake.

There's all kinds of reason for not signing Arod to $30 million over 8-10 years, but I'm gonna have a hard time remembering any of them if I'm staring at Kaz Matsui as our 2008-2010 SS.

"I hadn’t realized you sat in so many of the teams’ organizational meetings over the last month, my mistake." no, but i can read a newspaper online and read quotes from players and GMs. its mostly the players tipping the info. david wright's opened up a can of worms talking about scenerios he's played out with management in an "if" role. angels have linked him to 3rd. im not hearing any SS talk. granted, not everything is out in the open.

"but I’m gonna have a hard time remembering any of them if I’m staring at Kaz Matsui as our 2008-2010 SS" feel better if it was kaz/f.cordero/10-12m RF'r coming onboard? there's 30 teams that would love to have arod, but there's just so much $ on the table to do it.

well of course the Angels are talking about Arod at 3b, they have Cabrera at SS, Wood (okay third or SS) and Aybar at SS. It seems out of the teams that can afford him, only RSox and Cubs would have SS open for him and that's only if Lowell resigns. I'm a bit surprised that I haven't heard the Astros at all... They need a 3B and usually are willing to create a splash. Granted they need pitching more... It also seems to me that there's a team out there that's keeping its interest low key but will emerge as a contender. Basically, it's a little too quiet right now...

im surprised the dodgers are staying away, but so far they seem publicaly put off by the whole arod thing (though not expressively out, expressing interests in other areas)...maybe they dont want to set themselves up for a bidding war only to lose to their in-city "rival".

feel better if it was kaz/f.cordero/10-12m RF’r coming onboard? Not at all... Honestly, there's not much the Cubs HAVE to add and there's nothing on the FA market really worth having besides Arod. If there was a time to blow your wad on one player, this is the year for the Cubs. Sign Arod (I doubt he'll be a disaster at SS, Jeter still plays that position last time I checked and the Yanks are doing okay) Let Murton/JJ handle RF Pie/Fuld can handle CF, we know they can do it defensively and any offense will be considered a plus. Worst case scenario, JJ back to center and Murton or (gasp) Ward in RF. mid-season upgrade if necessary. You still have to resign Kerry somehow in there, but while I'd like an upgrade at starting pitching, unless Johann or Bedard actually do get moved, there's no one really worth upgrading too.

funny thing is I'm starting to think Arod is going to be the booby prize for whoever loses out on trading for Miguel Cabrera. I'm also wouldn't be surprised to find out that Boras/Arod overplayed their hand, but then of course I just have to remember Barry Zito to realize Boras always gets his money.

I say we throw caution to the wind. Sign Arod. Put Soriano create the greatest home run hitting infield EVER! This has nothing to do with winning or defense, just a crazy ass powerful infield.

It seems from some reports that Hendry will have 15 mil to spend this off-season so if signing Fukudome and Wood cost 12 mil, I dont have an issue throwing the extra 3 mil on Kaz because he is an upgrade over Cedeno as a utilty infielder and is equal to Theriot at SS. Maybe Hendry then while talking to Ricchardi can work out a 3 way deal where JJ goes to the 3rd team, Tor gets Cedeno, Gallagher, Dempster, Epat, and C+ level prospect from the 3rd team and we get Burnett.

Rob, Regardless if its 15 or 30 million they can afford to overpay a guy like Matsui if they are comitted to having a top 5 payroll. If it helps get Fukudome here then do it, because Either is probably the only trade candidate I would be interested in over him and I am not that big on Fukudome.

id like to see that milwaukee closer (cordero) sign with cubs nothing like screwing your top competition after dustys team not.

Whoever signs Cordero is going to regret it. That guy is jekyll or hyde and you shouldnt pay 10 million+ for that.

given what colorado was supposedly offering the whole payroll question of matsui is in the 2-3m range...of course that was all before this "the cubs pursuing him" stuff through the media. still, cant imagine him getting more than 3-4...find out just how bad whoever wants him if it does.

apparently my idea was lost in translation.... Spend the money on Arod don't spend it on Kaz/Fukodome/Cordero...

A-Rod "can't" play short anymore? Because his "reactions" are too "slow" at 3rd? Uhhh, okay. I always heard that you need faster reactions at 3rd, so this logic doesn't hold water. Can A-Rod play CF? Hahaha. No seriously, send Pie and another slew of no-talent AAA pitching for Cabrera and play A-Rod in CF. It worked for Robin Yount, yo.

well uh...if they're slow at 3rd...uh...they'll probably be slow at SS, too...uh...which doesnt make it...uh...any better cuz once you field the...uh...ball...you gotta do a lot more stuff with it. the point wasnt Arod cant play SS cuz he's lost a step...its just one minus in a string of things about the prospect of him moving back to SS after taking so many years off. you're totally blowing over the part where i said he would probably be a better fielding SS than some other regulars. WOAAAAAAAAAAAH?!?!?!?! HOW CAN THAT BE!?!?!? YOU GOTTA PICK A SIDE AND DEFEND IT!!!! GRRRR!!!! =p seriously, you're a smart guy...try to keep up. you also seem to think anyone not talking about arod or cabrerra is wasting their time while pretty much ignoring the fact the cubs arent thought to be in the market for either. go figure out how productive that line of reasoning is.

"and looking at how slowed on reaction arod has been the past couple years at 3rd i personally doubt a move back to SS where he’d have a lot more motion to put together plays would be something pretty." ...from my post eariler get interpreted as... "A-Rod “can’t” play short anymore? Because his “reactions” are too “slow” at 3rd? weaaaaaaaaak. WEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK. i should ♣ you, but you know i just ♥ you.

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet - sorry if I missed it. A couple years ago the Cubs re-signed Neifi in part, it was said, because he was pals with Furcal and it would help them land him. I can't say if Matsui would be any good or not, but I sincerely hope this is not the reason the Cubs give him a roster spot and dough.

I had a dream last night that my brother worked in the Cubs organization. I found out he'd been trying to work out a deal for A-Rod, and the Yankees wanted a straight-up trade for a Cubs minor league third baseman I'd never heard of. My brother told them to go screw themselves.

Also, ARod probably could play SS, but he'd have to lose some weight, so then you figure out whether the increased D is worth the decreased power.

Rob even mentioned meeeeee! Rob loves me more! Man... you should see how often Johann's mom yells like that...

Also, ARod probably could play SS, but he’d have to lose some weight, so then you figure out whether the increased D is worth the decreased power. Well... 2 things. 1 - weight doesn't equal power. 2 - A-Rod's power has remained remarkably consistent, having similar power numbers regardless of his weight.

Pittsburgh papers reporting that while Pirates won't exercise $5.85 mil option on Izturis, they do have interest in bringing him back at a lower price. What is the deadline for naming the PTBNL?

From Bruce Levine: For those of you interested, Bruce Levine is reporting that Season Ticket prices will raise 20%-25% in 2008. We'll be second only to the Red Sox in ticket prices. His sources are telling him that the extra money - $25MM - will go directly into payroll!

My take is that McDonough is at heart a marketing guy. That said, I think the appeal of the Japanese players is very high. Chicago is an International city and the appeal of global markets will be attractive to new owners. I'll bet they sign Fukodome.

No seriously, send Pie and another slew ... Can't you read, Chad said leave the slews out of this.

Sorry if this is 3/44 but Carrie says... Cubs outfielder Sam Fuld climbed up the Arizona Fall League's hitting headboard and ranked third in the circuit with a .400 average through Thursday. Fuld hit .486 (18-for-37) in 10 games from Oct. 24-Nov. 8, with six doubles, a triple, a home run and six RBIs for the Mesa Solar Sox. He had two hits in five consecutive games entering Mesa's showdown Friday with first-place Phoenix.

"i should ♣ you, but you know i just ♥ you." Crunch wins Three Internetz. Wheres da butan?!

btw heard on XM radio that Fukudome received an offer from the Giants....Tokyo Giants that is.

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.
