Soriano to be Activated Tonight?

As you've certainly heard by now, Alfonso Soriano headed out to a minor league rehab stint with the rookies in the Arizona League. He lasted all of three at-bats against the AZL Padres in beautiful Peoria, Arizona going 0-2 with a walk, a strikeout and a run scored before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. Speculation arose on why he'd leave the game early and Will Carroll hinted that he might be activated for tonight's game.

Shae (Chicago): Will, there are rumors that Soriano might leave the rehab. game early and could even play tonight, what's the latest?

Will Carroll: That's what I'm hearing. I have someone at Sky Harbor watching ...

I'm not sure what that someone is watching at Sky Harbor since it's a 35 minute drive from Peoria, AZ to Phoenix, AZ, but don't be surprised if he's in the lineup tonight and (I would assume) Micah Hoffpauir gets sent down.

Well, there's only so much room on the active roster but that would be disappointing. Iowa Manager, Pat Listach said he thought Hoffpauir might stick with the Cubs this time.

Lemme find the link.

Micah's third trip: Iowa Cubs manager Pat Listach is hoping the third time is the charm for Micah Hoffpauir with Chicago

Umm.. I don't think he'll be driving to the exact intersection where mapquest says Phoenix is... Anyone know where the D-backs' ballpark actually is in the Phoenix area?

holy balls, just pointing out the distance from Peoria to Phoenix...it's not that big a city.

but just for you, I updated the link with the exact addresses and the extra 7 minutes.

It's just a 14 mile straight shot down W. Grand Avenue from Peoria to the Diamondbacks' stadium on E. Jefferson.

Thanks, Rob G!
...and for what it's worth, it actually looks like Chase field is pretty much exactly where mapquest says Phoenix is... It just turns out the the Peoria ballpark is in a different place... Yes, I AM bored at work...
...and what the hell is Will Carroll talking about when he says he has someone at Sky Harbor looking for him??? Maybe he thinks Soriano was playing in Peoria, IL??

CWTP/Navigator will be to hear...
that our Peoria is 21-5 (or something like that) over our last 26 games. They're 21-10 in the 2nd half(first place).

The AZL Cubs are 14-9 (2nd place), Boise is 20-13(2nd place), Daytona is 16-11 (in the 2nd half and in first place) and Tennessee is 18-12 (same as Daytona).

See our minors are awesome now...

That's Peoria, IL if Will Carroll is reading.

And you're right, they're 21-5 over their last 26 games.

soriano just wanted to beat the traffic and
have time to stop at one of the areas many
strip clubs to give his hand a workout
giving one dollar tips.

i say there is noway he is acivated and starts
today vs. randy johnson

Why not? It's 2008 Randy Johnson not 2001 Randy Johnson.

It's 14 miles to Chase Field, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

Levine was asked about this earlier today on ESPN 1k and he said that Soriano would not be playing tonight or tomorrow in a MLB game. BTW, The Brewers-Cardinals game is on ESPN at 6 CT for those without MLB.tv or EI.

I wonder what's the optimal Cubs outcome for this series. Cards are closer, but the Brewers seem the bigger threat on paper.

Maybe if the Cards take 2 of 3? Bonus if the Cubs sweep the Dbacks *fingers crossed*.

Brewers/Cards is a 4-game series...root for a split.

It's a four game series, and here's hoping the Cards sweep (they won't) while we take all three (we should) from Arizona.

Like you, nohit, I'm more worried about the Brewers momentum. It could use a good derailing. And we finish the season in their house.

Thanks guys. I actually did check that before posting, but Yahoo is misleading: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/preview?gid=280721124 (see their Series at a Glance inset). Of course, now I see they state "four" in the first sentence of the article itself. :-/

Glad to hear it's a four game series. Let them beat up on each other and both lose momentum.

update on mlb.com

nothing on why he was lifted early, didn't play in the field.

Claims he's still likely play 2 games with Iowa, which just happens to be in Tucson right now.

wow...i did not know he was 82. i thought he was in his 60s (seriously).

got a few of his books and co-authored books. 'baseball, chicago style' jumps to mind as one of his better ones.

Brewers

2b Weeks
SS Hardy
LF Braun
1b Son of Cecil
RF Hart
CF Cameron
C Kendall
P McClung (who platoon starts with Dave Bush now, McClung on the road, Bush at home)

Cards

RF Shoemaker
2b Miles
1b Pujols
CF Ankiel (an overated defensive CF, he flops more than a pro wrestler on some balls)
3b Glaus
LF Son of Dave
C Brother of Bengie and Jose (who by the way is NYY starting C now)
P Pinero
SS Nutpopper

if he is activated tonight (i dont think he will be) i would assume wood to the dl, not micah down...

maybe, but chifan noted above that they didn't want to put Wood on the DL yet since the bullpen is rested. Not to mention Eyre needs to come off the disabled list soon for someone.

I saw Holtzman at a press thing at the Cubs Convention, and he looked a little frail. I just assumed it was age-related. I wanted to introduce myself but didn't. RIP, Jerome.

  • Other than the NL East (Dusty!), not much cookin' on division races. I am fine with that.

  • You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out of the dugout. You know what that makes you? Larry!

  • Its too bad Warren didnt get to pitch. He would have saved us.

  • Whoa -- that Contreras play in the 8th looked too much like a "Schwarber" -- nearly crashed into the wall going full speed, with Heyward doing the same.

New rule: if you are a catcher playing LF, and find yourself sprinting after a fly ball in the gap -- stop, let the CF go after it and get ready to play it off the wall.

  • Cubs have no spark and no life. Pretty boring to watch these days.

  • I thought trips to Miami were supposed to be fun. This one sucked.

The bottom half of the bullpen now turns close games into blowout losses. Not good.

Once Fowler went to the DL, the team went into the tank. Wonder if he'll get any love this offseason? Probably not.

  • 6IP, 2ER. The last one scored because of another botched Zobrist DP turn.

And now, a bad throw by KB. Sloppy.

  • What is it with Hammel always starting well and sucking after a couple months?

  • Ahhh...sad. Lke a few of you here, I saw him play during the '69-'71 seasons. He was the "hot Zobrist" for the club in August/September of '69 while everyone else was fizzling out...

  • I predict: "They will play hard and if they give the same effort every day, they'll win a lot of games."

  • There's some BA is missing too, here's all signing bonus BA doesn't have some:

    -6 Hockin $241,000 (slot price), 7 Cruz $75,000 (saved $110,00), 8 Ridlings $120,000 (saved $53,800), 9 Robinson $30,000 (saved $132,300), so far the Cubs have saved an extra $297,100

  • Also -- despite losing 6 of their last 10, the Cubs picked up a game on both STL and PIT during that period. Weird, given that they swept PIT and were swept by STL.
