Gameday Open Thread/A's @ Cubs

As a service to our readers, I will avoid the obligatory double Sean puns for today's starters - Marshall vs. Gallagher. Here's the lineup from Muskat:

LF Alfonso Soriano, SS Ryan Theriot, 3B Aramis Ramirez, 1B Jake Fox, RF Richie Robnett, CF Reed Johnson, C Paul Bako, 2B Andres Blanco, P Sean Marshall.

You can listen to this one on the radio if you have the means.

Someone needs to sit Hendry down and explain to him that we don't need DH's in the National League. It's really hard for some of us to even care that MB is on the Cubs, much less be excited about it. We had a left handed hitting RF back in 2005 who scored 84 runs, drove in 87, and hit 24 HRs. We were so impressed with him we didn't bother to bring him back in 2006. But, correct me if I'm wrong, all three of those stats would be career highs for Milton Bradley.

I know it's too late at this point. However count me in the camp that thinks it might be a good idea to trade for Nick Swisher right now while the Yanks have visions of Manny. Maybe a Kevin Gregg for Nick Swisher swap could be mutually beneficial?

I doubt the Yanks would accept a Swisher-for-Gregg trade straight up, but yes, I like Swisher on the team very much. I'll probably get blasted by the batting average-obsessed crowd, but o well, I don't really give a shyte about batting average.

I'd do Reed Johnson and Kevin Gregg for Swisher. Then we can let Kfuk and Swisher compete for the Cf job. Then the loser can start the other 90 games that Milton Bradley misses! (ducks down and crawles out the door)

manny will sign with LA... ...as soon as ST is closer to done. as far as manny being manny goes he knows he'll get his loot...he also knows he's not up at 7am to go play stretch and run while it's settling out.

IMO Bradley should be benched until he's fit to play baseball. Getting a quad injury on the first day of Spring Training? C'mon, the guy's not in shape, let him work out until his body is ready to go.

Aramis just hit a 3 run homer. Bottom of the 4th 6-0 Cubs ah, I see above that this game is being well-covered by TCR readers.

On a side note: Is anyone a bit worried that this massive push for DH'ing in spring training might lead to the DH being implemented in the NL? I know pitchers aren't going to hit well, but weren't the Cubs all about giving their pitchers plenty of ABs last spring? Weren't the Cubs all talking about making sure that the pitchers were ready to hit at the beginning of last season? Why the change this year?

Stanton is blowing chunks. This is our lefty "backup"? And now 2-run single w/bases juiced. 6-2 Good luck Stanton...

Randy Bush on the radio...says Cubs will probably play Team Japan on March 11th, could be another team in the Asia bracket of WBC though.

Theriot with a bare-handed grab and throw to get Giambi, high hop off the mound and some top spin to make the play...

Picked up my copy of MLB 2K9 this morning. I think it's got some potential to be a fantastic game, but I've got to work with the AI sliders a little bit first. The pitching mechanic in itself is fantastic from a realism standpoint, I think. One of the best ever. The lone problem is that the computer swings at everything in the strike zone. Z threw a 48 pitch complete game this morning against the Cardinals. If I get that tweaked a little bit, I think I'll have a fantastic game here. Hitting is nice and difficult, although I hit too many homers when I make contact. Franchise mode appears very deep, able to access all the way down to single A. I'll have more when I play it some more.

was wondering when the first "panic and cut" thread would pop up during spring games. i think we got it here. 30+ days of armchair manager to go...

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
