Cubs' Non-Baseball Business is Booming

"...Elton John's going to help us win some ballgames."

So says Crane Kenney in explaining how the extra revenue the Cubs will realize from three Wrigley Field concerts this summer, including the Elton John/Billy Joel event in late July, will translate into additional payroll flexibility.

More from Kenney:

"The CBOE [seat] auction last year paid for Rich Harden. The 'Road to Wrigley' game sponsored our Asian scouting operation. That's the way, from the business end, we look at these things. All these elements really help our business move forward. My view is if you're a Cub fan, you should enjoy the concerts whether you're an Elton John fan or not."

The Trib's Dave van Dyck also reports that the Cubs will be opening a new, year-round, 7,000-square-foot sports bar at Addison & Sheffield in time for the home opener on April 13th. The Harry Caray's Restaurant group will run the place, which will replace the Friendly Confines Cafe and be accessible to fans whether or not they hold a ticket to the game.

"We need to compete with all the other bars and restaurants in town," Kenney said.

Indeed. We can't have our baseball team not competing with all of the city's bars and restaurants.

\m/>.<\m/ It's getting late have you seen my mates Ma tell me when the boys get here It's seven o'clock and I want to rock Want to get a belly full of beer My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys And my old lady she don't care My sister looks cute in her braces and boots A handful of grease in her hair Don't give us none of your aggravation We had it with your discipline Saturday night's alright for fighting Get a little action in Get about as oiled as a diesel train Gonna set this dance alight `Cause Saturday night's the night I like Saturday night's alright alright alright Well they're packed pretty tight in here tonight I'm looking for a dolly who'll see me right I may use a little muscle to get what I need I may sink a little drink and shout out "She's with me!" A couple of the sound that I really like Are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike I'm a juvenile product of the working class Whose best friend floats in the bottom of a glass

US loses 10-6. Guthrie gave up 6 in the 2nd inning. US was able to cut it to 7-6, but then LaTroy gave up a 3 run bomb. Sounds about right. Still haven't figured out who the US will play in the semis. They still have to sort out the seeding between the Koreans & Japan/Cuba.

Thanks for the replies in the previous thread about tickets - i will try and upgrade my tickets from ebay or stubhub. one quickie, if the tickets are to be printed at home, and they forward the email onto me, what is to stop them selling the seats again and forwarding on the same email to someone else??? sorry never used stubhub, and print at home tickets have only just caught on over here - i especially like it when they charge the same amount as if they have to post to you...

"forward the email onto me, what is to stop them selling the seats again and forwarding on the same email to someone else???" You just have to rely on their honesty. If you get to the game and they don't work ebay has a process to get a refund (but that's a pain in the ass). That's why I always go with hard tickets. I don't mess with the print at home tickets. Stubhub I believe only sends hard tickets, and their prices aren't too bad. You can just get more of a deal on ebay I think if you catch the right auction. But I'd only bid on auctions that have tickets in hand, or are hard tickets.

Since Stubhub is affiliated with MLB, they have an eDelivery option which allows the seller to enter the bar code of the tickets. Stubhub then contacts the Cubs which invalidates that bar code and issues tickets with new bar codes to you. At least this is how I understand how it works. This wouldn't apply to eBay.

Just noticed: The Houston Astros are emphasizing speed and "manufacturing" runs this spring. They lead the major leagues in triples with 11 and have stolen 18 bases while being caught only once. They also have a total of (1) win which must be some kind of record.

Manufacturing in this country is not in a good position right now. Neither are the Astros.

I wonder if this new sports bar is going to charge $6 for an Old Style so you really feel like you're at the game? Also, I kind of like their Fund Accounting approach. I'd like my bar tabs at this new Wrigley Field sports bar to go towards a top flight free agent starting pitcher next year.

That’s just kinda how it works though, for every team. No team plays their best guys all the time. No team is comprising of their best 26 even removing injuries.

When baseball became a business, like REALLY a business, it became important to keep some of the vets happy, which in turn keeps agents happy and keeps the team with a good reputation among players and agents. No one wants to play for a team that has a bad reputation in the same way no one wants to work for a company that has a bad rep.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate it too. But there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

On that topic, I find it silly the Cubs brought up Canario to sit as much as he has. He’s going to get Velazquez’d, and it’s a shame.

Of course, McKinstry runs circles around $25 million man Javier Baez on that Tigers team. Guess who gets more playing time?

    But I digress…

Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.

At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.
