Marshall is the Man; Koskie Victimized by TCR Curse

Paul Sullivan reports in the Tribune that Sean Marshall has been officially anointed the Cubs' 5th starter.

Says Manager Lou:

"Marshall is going to be the fifth starter, and [Aaron] Heilman is going to pitch in that seventh-eighth inning role."

Less positive news on Corey Koskie, subject of our earlier post. Koskie came out of today's win over the Mariners in the third inning.

"I think when he dove for [a grounder] it caused him some problems,"
Piniella said. "He mentioned he wasn't feeling well, so we just took
him out."

Cubnut, I expect you to personally be sending Koskie a check while he's unable to get a contract. Jackass...

Already sent. I couldn't be more ashamed of myself.

Can you do a story about Miles?

solid...

Screw that, what about Joey Gathright?

he's gonna miss time when he finally decides to get his root canal.

piece on Koyie Hill by Muskat. The decision to keep Bako (or not) is coming soon, possibly tomorrow as AZ Phil has previously said March 20th was the date where Bako will cost the team $$ if he's not released.

(no mention that KHill adds 5 mph to each pitcher's fastball)

in case anyone wants to see a closeup's on Koyie's gnarly hand...

here's a picture:

this was from 2/24 by AZ Phil:

It also appears that Paul Bako and Koyie Hill will be engaged in a fight to the death for the back-up catcher gig. Or at least there should be a spirited competition for the job, until the Cubs are faced with Bako's contract becoming guaranteed if he doesn't get released (probably around March 20th). Both Bako and Hill are in good physical shape, and either of the two could win the job.

Gordon Edes on K.Hill...adding to the love-fest...both good articles, imo.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AoOmI6teU5BH...

Not a good article for those of us with a weak stomach for gross stuff.

Only a couple weeks until Cubs baseball...and before then we get a teaser with the Cubs playing the Yanks pre-season at the new Yankee Stadium.

I am so f'n ready.

Since TCR apparently has "curse power" now, could we curse our division rivals?

Scott Eyre is broke.

Yeah, and I think Chad might be gay...

Anyone else notice that Fukudome didn't even play last night for Japan? His OBP is still great - .435 - but that's due to 6 walks, he's only had 4 singles in 17 at-bats so far.

A .435 OBP in the 2009 WBC is nothing great.

http://web.worldbaseballclassic.com/stats/index.js...

Thanks for the link to the stats page, where do you think I found the .435?

Most of those guys on the list don't have shit for ABs. On Japan, Iwamura at .444 is the only one on the team with more at-bats and a higher OBP. Only Dunn has a higher OBP on team USA. For the most part, the only guys ahead of Fukudome with a comparable number of at-bats are guys like Delgado, Pudge, Beltran, Dunn, etc. So he is still doing very well OBP-wise, but my main point was that despite that he hasn't hit worth shit and it appears he as benched.

possibly benched due to a left-handed starter for korea?

  • Whoops. Maddon must have been reading TCR (for his daily crunch) and got confused.

  • kuhl is a righty, not a lefty.

i think maddon might think kuhl is a lefty, too. i wonder what the reasoning is for baez leading off vs a rightie.

  • "trout's one of the best, and at this point should probably win over donaldson (and should have more MVPs in the past, too), but the defensive aspect of valuing WAR still needs more tweaking...imo."

that's from my 1st post. there's no suck involved in that. maybe with a few less posts about bullshit that point would have jumped out more.

  • crunch - you do know that, taking defense out of the equation, Trout has led the AL in wRC+ each of those years, right?

And, if you want to complain about position adjustment (which would be serious #crunchsplaining), he's been in the top 3 in the AL in WC (not park/league/position adjusted). And the only players ahead of him (if there were any players ahead of him) in any of those years have been DHs or 1B that play lousy defense.

But sure - Trout sucks (or at least isn't as good as WAR says). Because it factors in defense and position.

  • early tim tebow stuff rolling in...

ran a 6.7 60yd (above average)...shagging flies in RF and showed off a rather impressive arm a few times, but average-at best on most of his throws...hit a few over the fence (both fields), fouled or weak contact a few...he's got a touch of power

it'll be interesting to see who bites on this project, if anyone. he probably projected himself out of RF and into LF/1st because of his arm, but unless he can make that power work on a steady basis it'll be hard for him to play himself up anyone's system.

  • LHP Clayton Richard (released by the Cubs earlier this month) is pitching very well as a starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres and could be a good candidate to get traded to a contender looking for a veteran SP before tomorrow night's post-season roster eligibility deadline.

Because they released him, the Cubs are paying most of Richard's 2016 salary (the Cubs are on the hooks for $2M, minus the pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum salary that is paid by the Padres).

  • it is honestly awesome (for real) that anyone would even have a strong opinion on AZL playoffs. i guess if you invest enough time watching it, you want to see a fair/just playoff structure.

    plus, the kids deserve it.

  • The AZL team with the best record over the course of the full 2016 AZL season and the only AZL team to play .600 ball (the AZL Dodgers) did not qualify for the AZL playoffs, and the AZL East Division team with the best record over the course of the full season (the AZL Athletics) did not qualify for the AZL playoffs, either.

That's because of the ridiculous "split season" schedule most of the minor leagues now play, a stupid system that rewards mediocrity at the expense of the worthy.

  • Despite good movement on his fastball, I think location kept him from getting Ks. Left some pitches up and away that got hammered up and away. Then of course Travis Wood gave up the 2-run double in the 7th, but both runs counted against Arrieta.
