TCR '09 Contest

It's time for another TCR contest. 10 questions which you need to enter on this google spreadsheet. Just enter your name below the last entry and fill-in your response. It should auto-save as you enter your answers. I short-handed the questions on the spreadsheet, but here are the full questions (10 pts for each correct answer):

1) Total regular season wins for the team (10 pts for the correct answer, subtract 1 pt for each win you're off by)

2) First player on the original 25-man roster to the disabled list?

3) Most HR's by a Cub in 2009?

4) Most Stolen Bases by a Cub in 2009?

5) Which Cub will finish highest in the NL MVP Voting?

6) First player to be called up from the minor leagues?

7) Most wins by a Cubs pitcher?

8) Most plate appearances for the Cubs in the #2 spot in the lineup?

9) Most plate appearances for the Cubs in the #8 spot in the lineup?

10) Most innings pitched by a Cub?

Tie-break question) Innings pitched by Jeff Samardzija in the majors? (Closest wins)

I don't have a prize yet but I'll figure out something by the time this is complete after the NL MVP voting. Question #2 depends on the original 25-man roster, so if they put Rich Harden on before or as they announce the final roster, that doesn't count, so you might wait to answer that or go back and change it before the entry period closes. I assume I can trust everyone not to cheat and edit other people's entries. I will ask everyone to check their answers after I do close it which will be after the first pitch on Monday against the Astros.

Good luck.

Have been placed in google spreadsheet at the request of Capt. Rob

you guys need to put your answers on the google spreadsheet, I'm not doing the data entry this year.

Hi from Shanghai China Wittenmyer on twitter... Gaudin released. Guzman and Patton make final spots. Shark to Des Moines

Heilman better be ready to take over for Harden. And Samardzija better be ready in case Heilman can't cut it as a starter. I was all for the Harden and Gaudin trade when it looked like the Cubs might have both players for 09. Now Harden looks like his arm is messed up and Gaudin is injured and the Cubs are paying for them anyway. I want Gallagher and Donaldson back. Boo hoo.

1) 94 2) Harden 3) A-Ram 4) Gathright 5) Soto 6) Jose Ascaino 7) Zambrano 8) TheRiot 9) Miles 10) Dempster Tie-break question) 45

Clearly, the Cubs were hoping to trade Gaudin, but it annoys me a bit that they're releasing him now and eating $2M on his salary. They really should have dumped him before his money became guaranteed.

I had more fun screwing with the other guys trying to fill out the spreadsheet than anything else.

mine are: 1. 94 2. Fukudome (This was the toughest for me as I thought it could be Patton if he has a bad start maybe they would try stashing him there as long as possible. I think Fuku will suck at the beginning of the year and they will use a DL stint as a face saving excuse to option him to AAA to put it together. 3. Soto (Everyone picked Soriano or Aram so I wanted to pick someone else to get an advantage over everyone else if it is neither of them. I think Soto is more likely than Bradley and Lee because Bradley's fraility and Lee's power drainage will lead to Hoff taking AB's from them) 4. Soriano (only one on the team that will get plenty of SB attempts) 5. Soriano (likely 25/25 guy on first place team, that should be a top 5 lock) 6. Jake Fox (if Fuku is the first one to go down, Fox is the logical call-up as I think Reed would likely be the everyday guy at that point instead of a platoon with Gathright.) 7 and 10. Peavy (I think once Ricketts gets control of the team in May and deal will be done by the middle of June at the latest. I think they will treat Z and Harden with kid gloves knowing they got breathing room in the division and both had shoulder issues last year. After Lilly's spring I am only trusting him to give us 4th starter numbers. So if it is going to someone on this roster as of now I would say Dempster by default.) 8 and 9. Lee and Theriot (his power does not come back, Fuku struggles and Soto starts off hot, which leads to an "A" lineup throughout the year of: Sori, Dlee, Aram, Bradley, Soto, Fonty, Reed, Therot). 11. 129 (He is likely going to be the 6th starter which will get a good amount of IP this season)

129 innings pitched for Samardzija? Ouch. I guess that seems more likely if you don't see the Cubs giving Heilman a shot to start in the event of needing another pitcher for the rotation.

Can anyone answer this for me? What happened to the Civil Rights Game? (not that I watched either "classic" but it seemed like a good idea)

In reply to by SJS

Answer in detail: the game will be played in Cincinnati June 20th. Barack Obama is throwing out the first pitch. Look for the Brennamans (Thommy & Marty)to either call in sick or fight having to vomit during the broadcast. They don't likey the Dems in these parts. We have tickets but will be in full Cubs gear, honoring the late great civil rights leader, Herman Franks.

Haven't you been banned yet? I mean, for all the other ways that Rob demonstrates his hatred for Samardzija, I'd think banning you for your signature line would've been the next logical step after listing Someninja last in every list ever made.

I am glad my smear campaign against him worked. Pay back for what they did to Sosa.

I admit that I fudged some of my predictions to try to find a little "separation" from the rest of the pack: 1) Total regular season wins for the team: 102 (why not fudge high if it'll make me happy?) 2) First player on the disabled list: Guzman (I hope I don't win at Guz's expense, but he's got a history, and most of the obvious frontrunners already have a lot of support) 3) Most HR's by a Cub in 2009? ARam 4) Most Stolen Bases by a Cub in 2009? Theriot 5) Which Cub will finish highest in the NL MVP Voting? Soto (I figure that Soto and Bradley are the most likely to have the "look at me" type years that the voters love. Soto because he's young and a catcher, Bradley because of his baggage) 6) First player to be called up from the minor leagues? Smarj (Odds are it's gonna be a pitcher and he's #13 on the staff) 7) Most wins by a Cubs pitcher? Harden (If this is true, 102 wins might be low ...) 8) Most plate appearances for the Cubs in the #2 spot in the lineup? Fukudome (he's gonna be respectable this year) 9) Most plate appearances for the Cubs in the #8 spot in the lineup? FOntenot (Yeah I know Lou's got this lefty righty thing, but I'm betting on Theriot to have the better year and move aroung the lineup more.) 10) Most innings pitched by a Cub? Zambrano (even if I dream of Harden leading in wins I don't see anyone pitching more IP than Z). Tie-break question) Innings pitched by Jeff Samardzija: 67 (He'll yo yo all season between Iowa and Chicago as well as between SP and RP.)

1) Total wins: 90 wins 2) First player on DL: Rich Harden 3) Most HR's: Alfonso Soriano 4) Most Stolen Bases: Ryan Theriot 5) Highest in NL MVP Voting: Aramis Ramirez 6) First player called up: Jeff Smardzija 7) Most wins a pitcher: Carlos Zambrano 8) Most plate appearances in the #2 spot: Ryan Theriot 9) Most plate appearances in the #8 spot: Reed Johnson 10) Most innings pitched: Carlos Zambrano Tie-breaker, Innings pitched by Jeff Samardzija: 95

Hey Rob - You just want us to post our answers here, and you'll take the time to insert each answer, right? I was assumming that "link" was just to show off your internet prowess.

I posted my guesses, but are they saved? Here they are 90 Harden Ramirez Theriot Ramirez Samardzjia Zambrano Theriot Fukudome Dempster 45

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

    booooooooooo

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
