Game 3 Recap: Cubs 11, Astros 6

W - Ted Lilly (1-0)
L - Brian Moehler (0-1)

Box Score

In the spirit of Passover, we begin tonight's recap by asking, why is this night different from all other nights?

The answer:

Tonight the Cubs sent nine men to the plate in each of the first two innings, building a lead so large, it allowed Ted Lilly to throw his own personal game of Home Run Derby and still win his first game of the season.

Details after the jump.

The Good:

  • The hits just kept on coming—Fukudome had four safeties (including a 2B and HR); Ramirez had four (including a 2B); and Soriano, Fontenot, and Theriot had two each
  • Did I mention that Kosuke "First Pitch" Fukudome had four hits? The first three all resulted from first-pitch swings, an interesting shift in approach from a guy who ranked second in the NL last season in pitches seen per plate appearance (4.29)
  • Anthony Michael Hall lookalike David Patton made his Major League debut and after serving up a home run ball to Hunter Pence, the 23-year-old Patton mowed down six Astros in a row, including Lance Berkman on a three-pitch strikeout that featured a 95 mph fastball, an 82-mph breaking ball, and an 85-mph curveball for the kill
  • Still looking for his first Cub hit, Milton Bradley nonetheless managed to reach base four times, via 3 walks and an HBP
  • Carlos Marmol and Angel Guzman each delivered another strong inning in relief

The Bad:

  • Lilly gave up 4 HR in just 5 IP; this spring he gave up 5 HR in just 11 IP. Yes, the wind was howling to centerfield tonight and Arizona has thin air, but that's a damn lot of home runs
  • Derrek Lee went 1-for-6 with three strikeouts
  • Alfonso Soriano got thrown out at first on a play in which Miguel Tejada double-clutched not once, but twice (four clutches total); somebody's wheels just aren't what they used to be
  • The Cubs will not get to hit against Brian Moehler and Russ Ortiz every night for the rest of the season

Any chance anyone has decent tickets for the April 19th Sunday night game against the Cardinals? I am profoundly sorry if I am violating protocol, but I have come up with bupkus in all my other attempts to get tix.

It will be part of my Honeymoon, and I am hoping to secure some tickets before I get to Chicago.

Thanks for tolerating this post.

Don't have tix for you but others have posted requests before, so it shouldn't be any problem for you to ask.

Milton Bradley is going for the Guiness Book of World Records for most runs scored by a guy with a .000 batting average.

Did Houston move to Arizona and I missed it? :D

(He's talking about Spring Training games as well as last night's game in Houston.)

Anyone happen to hear Bruce Miles on The Score this morning? Wondered if he had any Soto update?

I did.

He had nothing except it might be a trip to the dl or day to day. He said the Cubs can survive Hill for awhile and it's still early.

Looking at the picture of Milo, I want to punch him in his face.

It is early and the division is weak and the Cubs have good offensive support around him, but hope we don't have to live with Hill for very long. I think by the end of the year, we will be hoping for the days of having a backup catcher as "good" as Paul Bako. I hope the Cubs are cautious with Soto and maybe sit him out the 3 games in MIL this weekend, but just don't make this a thing where he is out for a month due to pushing him.

hill will be lucky to get 200-250ab. if that hurts the team in any way hill would have to run into an unreal stretch of bad luck.

and what can bako do that hill cant...maybe hit a couple more homers or a few more doubles?

Completely agree. I looked for a while and this was the most punchable shot I could come up with.

Man, as much of a cockgobbler as he is, I just can't even imagine myself punching a frail old man in the face. He looks like he would just shatter like he was frozen in liquid nitrogen or something.

I have 4 for 4/19, upper deck box. I'm going Saturday. Let me know!

I wish would get the kinks out. I only caught the last half of the game last night and wanted to catch the highlights from the first part, but the links to the archived game and the video highlights bring you to nothing. I opened gameday and tried to watch the video highlights in that and the only one they have is, get this, Pence's home run. Just dumb.

It's pretty tough to deliver archived games, condensed games, and highlights when whole innings are missing from the video streams. I wonder how much of these problems are due to lack of cooperation from Microsoft. switched their media streaming contract from Silverlight to Flash and now I understand both sides are in court.

3 seasons in a row it has been that way. First 2 weeks or so they work the new stuff in, with all the new subscribers jamming the servers as well. I had a 85% good view last night. I figured the requirements would be higher so I bought a new computer to watch the games, and the picture quality is already 100% better/bigger than last year. But the jumping at times and freezing, just have to be patient while the nerd herd works on it since this is the first year almost everything is available high def. Len and Bob were good!

Normally I'm blacked out from all Astros games (doesn't bother me unless they play the Cubs) but for some reason they let me watch. Also surprised they didn't raise the price of MLB TV. All in all, a good deal since I get to watch our division opponents as well and "scout."

I am using a 6 yr old laptop, and was able to follow the Cards/Pirates game while in Parachat with no problems. Are those of you having trouble watching multiple games?

I have been completely fine in games so far. I have a fast internet connection and new laptop. I've also been able to select the away feed for games even though I haven't paid for premium. My only problems are the day after the games, I can't access any highlights or archived games on the website.

If I remember correctly, is run by a former Golden BADgers are going to get a good experience (insert villainous laughter)

most cable/sat providers are running the free MLB package this week so if you can't get online to watch there you go.

Loved the pop off Aramis' bat. Loved seeing Fukudome being aggressive in his zone, patient outside it. Loved Bradley contributing despite not getting a hit.

Boy - lots of new faces coming here. Wondering if the rainbows and roses at Al's site is just too much to take? Oh, and the constant chatter of non-baseball-related crap.

Not sure if I'm among the perceived new faces, but I've been lurking these parts since before MVP, John Hill, Alec and the all-baseball days. Back when Ruz got excited about baseball again.

Anyway, I like to only chime in when I can improve on the current conversation. Though I'm not usually successful at that. : )

I think I'm just a little excited as I've started paying for my television service for the first time in many years. So I can actually see all the games now. Crazy. I'll miss the radio guys, but I can't deny my enthusiasm.

Sad news the Angels SP Nick Adenhart was killed in a car crash hours after he pitched.

Nick Adenhart killed in car crash after game.

He was 22.

This is truly sad...

Utter fucking waste. What a downer.

There were two other people in the car with Adenhart that are also dead. I hope for the sake of the Angels it's no one else associated with the team.

Who else would he be hanging out with after a game, though? How many people can he know in Orange County in his very short time there?

Fingers crossed.

Very, very sad news for the Angels and the Adenhart family.

This article has a picture of the car, completely fucked up.

And not surprising, fucking drunk driver who was driving with a suspended license for driving drunk before.

what the hell...oh man.

dude was a 14th round pick who OMG'd his way up the system. this spring he showed enough command over his stuff to break with the team as a starter...the 2 injuries helped a bit, too.

just wow...

is harden actually starting tomorrow? I thought they were going to wait a while

On pace for...

Theriot - .615 BA
Bradley - 0 hits, 216 BB
Ramirez - 270 RBI
Soriano - 108 HR, 108 RBI
Lilly - 32 - 0, 9.00 ERA, 130 HR

It seemed to me that Moehler actually had decent stuff, at least in the first inning.

Silverlight is a hideous technology.

  • "MLB announces #Cubs Minor League RHP Tanner Griggs receives 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for amphetamine"

    2014 12th rounder...

it's hard to know who to blame...on one hand he's a baseball player, on the other he sells cars in the offseason...either job leads to amphetamine abuse. =p

  • Thanks PHIL! I thought only the Cubs had control until the last day of the MLB 2015 Season.

  • that's awesome...makes me look forward to hearing theo talk some more about how the team needs to be creative with finances because money is tight.

  • See What The Cubs Are Building This Off-Season For Wrigley Plaza, Clubhouse

  • CUBBIES-4-EVER: It's not unusual for a PTBNL to be chosen after the Rule 5 Draft from the list of Rule 5 eligible players who were not selected. That way, a club gets a player they like (perhaps somebody like OF Jeffrey Baez) without the cumbersome Rule 5 roster restrictions that go with a Rule 5 Draft pick.

  • Clayton Richard is absolutely, positively NOT a free-agent. He is under club control through the 2016 season.

  • Haren was 4-2 with a 4.01 ERA with the Cubs. Seems like he worked out just as expected.

  • Did they ever say or who the PTBNL or cash decision on Rodney was or who was the PTBNL in the Austin Jackson deal was yet? Neither was worth whatever they gave up. Cahill and Richard were the only two good "deadline" deals they made. Hunter (given Lake was the odd man out by far and taking up a roster spot) and Haren weren't worth it.

  • says he is, site says he's a Cub, great cooperation between the 2 sites, weird

  • The drafting of Shea at #1 was a sign of things to come -- an undersized white linebacker who's not particularly fast; lets make him an NFL defensive end! Just idiotic. When the best thing you can say about your #1 pick is that he has a "high motor", that's a problem...that's what you should say about late-round picks.

  • Not AZ PHIL but after being DFA'd by the Cubs (after they got him from the Pirates in the "I get a chance in the Majors clause"), the Cubs re-signed him for the remainder of the season. I do not believe service time is an issue for him, so he is eligible to opt for Major League Free Agency - which he is doing and the Cubs or someone else will sign him to an MLB deal. AZ PHIL please correct this if you see fit - but that is the most current info that I'm aware of.

  • To also be fair to Emery, wtf do you draft Shea McLellin as a #1, Jonathan Bostic in the same draft, let Peppers go in lieu of signing Jared Shit-Head, Brandon Hardin, Evan Rodriguez, Isiah Frey, on and on...

I will give him credit for Kyle Long - who is like my favorite player (what does THAT say about the team - but he did throw in the 90's as a former pitcher), and Jeffrey.

  • Geo Soto leaves the WSux and signs with the Angels who lost Chris Ianetta to the Mariners.

Freed... The Angels also promoted Bobby Scales from director of player development to special assistant

  • AZ PHIL- Is Clayton Richard a free agent or not? One site I see he is, on another no. MLB has him listed as a free agent, Cot's contracts says he is a FA, baseball-reference says he's not, but Cubs have him on active roster. I know that he is just short of MLB 6 years service by just like 15 days, but that doesn't always matter.

  • Except that he gave up Russell and McKinney for a half-season of Hammel...

  • Beane cam at least point and laugh at Hammel.
