Cubs Lineup If They Play (Maybe They Shouldn't)

Update: First pitch now set for 2pm.

Update: Well, tomorrow's forecast is no bargain either--50% chance of precipitation--which is consistent with the latest from Paul Sullivan that the Cubs are determined to get today's game in. Sullivan also quotes Bob Brenly, who said on WSCR this morning that it seemed like an obvious move to slide Aramis Ramirez into the third spot and drop Derrek Lee (2-for-25) down into the fifth spot. Obviously not an issue today with Ramirez and Milton Bradley both out of the starting lineup.

Update: Yes, this would not only be Fontenot's first-ever start at 3B, it would be the first time he has ever played the position in the majors. From what I can tell, he played some third in '05 at Iowa, but other than that, it has been all shortstop and second base.

Gordon Witternmyer tweets that, according to Lou Piniella, Milton Bradley is feeling better, but Aramis Ramirez has a sore back and is not in the starting lineup:

Soriano, lf
Theriot, ss
Fukudome, rf
Lee, 1b
Fontenot, 3b
Johnson, cf
Miles, 2b
Hill, c
Lilly, p

SWEET: TheRiot in the 2 hole!

You prefer Theriot in your 2 hole?

I figured that would be the comeback de jour.

Well, the 2-hole joke might be a bit played out. Nevertheless, I am immature and always find it funny.

I'm sure over the course of the season, you'll have plenty of opportunities to call me out on my manlove for TheRiot

OMG, Aramis Ramirez is not playing! I can't believe Hendry gave him that guaranteed contract with no games played clauses! It's probably the end of the world.

Fukudome in the 3 hole? I know he's been hot, but WTF?

Kind of surprised that he put Johnson given that Jimenez in his career has held RHB to a .228 BA. Given no Bradley, Ram, or Soto it would seem prudent to sacrifice some defense and put Hoffpauir in RF, even with Lilly pitching today.

This lineup sucks. Like, f'reals.

Luckily, a rainout looks imminent. Can't believe I just typed that.

I'm supposed to go to this game, but given the lineup and the weather I'm really hoping for an early call on a rainout.

Why does Lou hate HoffPOWER?

where is the Ted Lilly fan club predictation ?

we also finally got Lee out of the three hole, only if we could move him down two more spots next game

100% our fault. After too many early morning Sanka/Bud Extra cocktails, we decided to have a fun-run in the rain. Well, that didn't end so well for us or the TLFC Super Computer (hint: rain and electronics are a bad match).

BUT--we dried, de-lubed and re-lubed the TLFCSC: 6 IP, 5K, 1 ER, 2 walks and free lifetime memories for Cubs faithful in attendance

Hopefully Ted does better against Rockies at home then he did last May.

He did.

Good on you, TL (and TLFC).

~tip of cap~ to Ted Lilly.

TLFC- you know I was just teasing.

Interesting that Piniella would rather break up the Theriot/Fontenot DP combo and start Fontenot at 3rd. Miles hasn't played there much, but he has played there some (15 games, 26 chances, no errors).

Interesting is one word for it. I would have probably gone with 'stupid'.

I would bet that this lineup is right, except that Miles is playing 3b, with Fonty playing 2b...

That's what I was thinking, too, except that Wittenmyer posted a separate message indicating that Fontenot was going to play third. You could be right. We'll see.

scrap, crap.

Since it's backup day, I'd really like to see He-Man get the start over Lee.

It wasn't really backup day. It was 'Oh shit, who is going to play!?!' day.

Did anyone else literally laugh out loud when they saw the lineup? I did.

Radar looks like things should be clearing up in 30 minutes or so... It'll be a cold, wet one, but it looks like it might be playable...

Harry Kalas dead at age 73. Loved his voice!!

This lineup kicks ass like whoazies.

Troy Glaus, Scott Schoenweis, Todd Greene and Ismael Valdez linked to steroids.

Glaus should serve a ban retroactively if he ever plays again.

I know Glaus was not on Cardinals in 2003, but those guys seem to flock to Larussa at some point in their careers.

Anyone who thinks Pujols is clean is deluding themselves.

And the truth will come out long after Pujols is done making gobs of money and everyone will gasp and be horrified.

Eff it.

Pujols, steroids and Cardinal or not, will always get a pass in my book for marrying a lady who's got a kid with Down Syndrome.

Is the game starting or what? My Gamecast window still says it is delayed... It was supposedly going to start 10 minutes ago...

Lineups being announced now.

Very bummed about Harry Kalas; a great announcer. Another special baseball announcer gone. My condolences to the Philly fans-it sucks to lose your cool grandpa announcer. Plus, he did the Puppy Bowl, which was very kickass of him to do. Godspeed, Harry.

Is this game going to worrth it today? Methinks meh. oh well, Go CUBS!!!!! Woooooooo!

I knew the name was familiar - he did NFL films as well, seems like forever.

No Aramis, No DL Bradley, and No Geo, I would have gone with a lineup closer to this:

I know it's the home opener and all but this would have been a good time to move Fonzie into the heart of the order. FWIW Kosuke has never hit third in MLB.

Did I see correctly that Brandon Guyer is on the bench for the Cubs? CBSSports GameCenter shows Guyer on the bench for today's game. Did I miss something? I hope this isn't 3/44 and I get run out of here!!

CBS missed something...they seem to think he's on the roster and a backup OF'r for a few days now.

Hide your 4 lb pretzel here comes Gledon Rusch.

He's looking slim. He no longer looks like Tweedle Dum...well, not as much.

Oh man, I wanted to see Glendon "Hendry's Buffett Partner" Rusch. I am sure he and Hendry will be hitting the town tonight.

Way to stay classy, Manny.

HA HA!! That is tame compared to some of the stuff that has been said on here...:) Heck,it is nicer than the two comments above mine. Guess we have a whole bunch of "classy" people on TCR.

Don't include me in the non-classiness. I was complimenting Tubby. He always looked like Tweedle Dum. Now, not so much. Joe, class personified.

And my family of 5 and I enjoyed the 4 lb pretzel.

CNN reporting now that Mark "The Bird" Fidrych has been found dead at his home at 54 years of age.

WTF is going on today!?!?!

I know!! I heard that right after the game ended Ron Santo lost another leg!

It looks like, barring a disaster, the Cubs will win this one, with the help of a great effort from Lilly. However, leaving 12 runners on base signals a continuing problem.

Yeah, it almost seems like maybe they could use a few more established MLB bats...
Oh, wait! Three of their starting main-RBI guys are sitting out today! Go figure...

Actually... it just means that the Cubs had a lot of base runners. Most good offenses strand a lot of runners.

Did Guzman just bat for himself in the bottom of the 7th with 2 out and no one on, and then get replaced in the top of the 8th? I understand we're playing with 22 guys today, but couldn't they have sent Soto or Hoffpauir up to PH there? There hasn't been a single bench player used yet, right?

CUBS WIN!!! CBS WIN!!! 4-0 shutout at the Home Opener for the Cubs vs. COL. Move the Cubbies to 5-2 currently ties with STL for the division lead.

Didn't get to see the game today as I was at work and had to "watch" it on CBS GameCenter.

- Lilly. Took a no-no into the 7th inning in a dominating performance.
- Hill. The back-up C did admirably holding the line while Soto was out. Hopefully these extra AB's will help keep him ready to go for the occasional spot start down the road.
- Lee. Went 2-3 today and hopefully showing signs of breaking out of his slump.

- Men LOB. The Cubs offense continues to leave a ton of guys on base. The had 9 BB's and 9 hits today and only scored 4 runs.

- The Weather. From the pictures and the last inning I saw it was not pretty out there. I am sure that went a long way helping with the low scoring of both teams.

Great start to the homestand and now we got an offday tomorrow. Come back on Wednesday afternoon with Harden on the mound vs. Jason Marquis. Hopefully it is payback time to the heartache he caused some of us Cubs fans.

That's not the first time Lilly took a no-no late into a game. Great performance.

Nice game that probably coud have gone the other way. They probably could have scored alot more runs but Jimenez is actually a pretty good pitcher so its not like he's easy to get big hits off of, the walks really helped us obviously.

Lilly looked great, maybe I'm a goof but Len and Bob did such a good job of not talking about the no-hitter that I didn't even realize it was going on.

The bullpen still looked iffy even though they got the job done. Marmol is the only one I truly trust at this point and I think Lou might be in the same boat.

Wednesday vs Marquis, no way will he beat Harden, write it down!

Gregg looked iffy while striking out the side?

Gregg still threw a lot of balls? I'm not convinced he's lights out all the sudden. Believe me I am a Gregg supporter he's just off to a slow start.

Wouldn't say iffy, but he did walk a guy and one of the K's was a full count the the third strike was clearly a ball. I think the umps just wanted to get thw hell outta there.

Watched the whole game. There were a ton of 3-2 counts. Reynolds got a lot of looks from both sides as he was very inconsistent, he was fooled more than the Rockies on a lot of Ted's curveballs. I'll bet Hurdle was ejected for complaining to the crew chief.

One highlite was Sutcliffe leaving Len and Bob in an 8th inning hurry (after they held him over from the 7th), he said things were going bad on the field (a BB) and excused himself. They could have asked Jody to sit down but they didn't. Good anti-curse moment.

from the department of 'clear as mud' at ESPN...

milton bradley out 3-5 days...

Apparently hammy and groin mean the same thing at ESPN.

Was just listening to WGN radio tonight and they said this morning Chicago Police found a severed goat head on Harry Caray's statue outside Wrigley. Police say it was a prank.

About 10% funny and cool, but mostly 90% just sick.

"Police say it was a prank."

What were the other options, Voodoo ritual?

Yeah, I kind of just assumed it was a prank, too. Of course, Little Nate Lewis's fantasy ball team in our league is "Kill the Goat". Suppose he had something to do with it?

At least they didn't do it looks like you can buy goat heads around Chicago...

Perhaps this is "Scott Eyre is broke" and 3/44 territory, but ESPN has launched its first city specific site and its for Chicago; pretty good coverage of the Cubs (along with the Sox, unfortunately).

Second time it's happened, and it was more than a head. It was a carcass. As if Cubs fans didn't already have a reputation (to a lot of people, anyway) as being douchebags, this doesn't help.

Ryno - I'm "The Slump Busters"..... but I do hate goats.

Apologies! The team Kill the Goat is actually the elusive TCR poster: "Q"

Sorry about that.

  • Oh what do you know, Cubster? Go back to your day job.

--- Ducks, puts on Cardinals cap, runs.

  • Russell had a severe hamstring last year while with the A's system, forcing him to miss the first half of 2014. I've even wondered if his injury last year was a component of Billy Beane putting him on the trade market. He was quoted saying that last year's injury was a 10 out of 10 when it happened. Last night he said his hamstring soreness was a 1/1.5 out of 10. Hamstring injuries are tricky though, so I'd expect the medical team to be overly cautious here.

  • ...I want to reinforce the observation that there was no sea of red in the crowd. The usual Cardinal fans roaming the stadium were few and far between.

Also, almost every 2 strike pitch brought the fans to their feet. Good for those in knee rehab.

  • "1st team hit hit 6HR in a game in the postseason." rises above obvious...i checked it with the official fact-finding commission of Douche, Douche, and Douchestein. they agreed with you, but they're a bunch of f'n douches so who cares?

btw, the cubs are 2-1 in the post-season series.

  • I should be able to watch the game on the NFL replay app, whatever that thing is called. I've got it on my iPad. This is the first year I haven't forced myself to somehow watch every game - no I take that back, last year was - in quite some time. Last year was so unbearable, no pun intended.

You make some good points about Cutler, and I was a holdout defender of Cutler for a long time. I gave up on him a bit after one too many dumb interceptions, but last year doesn't count. Trestman was the worst coach in Bears history.

  • Nice little reportage there!. I think you're older than me. Considerably older. Maybe several generations. Working out is so essential, especially as age kicks in, isn't it? I still lift weights, and so I'm confident that when I get to be at the hip breaking age, mine won't be a statistic. But I have a ways to go for that to be a concern.

  • What was impressive to me is that the Cubs won despite poor base running, several defensive miscues, Russell leaving due to injury, Arrieta having an off game and getting knocked out early, and Rondon giving up 2 runs in the 9th. If they can win a game like that...

  • I was there too. The crowd was absolutely electric. People were standing for every big and semi-big moment, from the first inning on. It felt incredibly strange and exhilarating to see the Cubs (the Chicago bleepin' Cubs!) score playoff insurance runs on the Cardinals. What a game. One to remember.

  • 14 in attendance. What's the record for attendance in the fall? I guess I should ask what the record attendance listed is in one of your recaps.

  • I was there too, with my grown son. This is my miracle year-- I rose to the top of the season ticket list after eight years, completely unexpectedly, and my wonderful wife agreed to put the ticket fee on the emergency credit card. The whole point of course was that the Cubs were going to be good this year, and then for a while, so to get season tickets with the guaranteed shot at the postseason was incredible timing. We got to the remote lot at 4:10 after stopping at Nhu Lan for our usual banh mi sandwiches, only to find the lot full, way earlier than normal.

  • Wrigley was electric tonite
    Not many card fans
Video board was great, they played "there goes my hero" by foos over ryno highlights before he came out. Spectacular

Good times hopefully they win tomorrow but think Lester will beat poopy pants on Wednesday.

Happy 4th anniversary of Theo's signing

    Go Cubs !

  • Yeah. "Goodbye!" is a lame HR call.

I miss Len and JD -- although, driving home from a friend's, WBBM played all 6 HR calls in a row -- and Len got to call the Bryant/Rizzo back-to-back. Very fun.

  • Lackey has been a beast against us. His stats on 3 days rest, however, not as nice. There is plenty of hope.

  • And, no dreadlocks grown yet.

  • Captain Obvious Strikes Again!!!

  • Amen, brother.
