Cashner Right On the Money at Fitch

Cubs 2008 #1 draft pick RHP Andrew Cashner (TCU) made his professional debut today, as the AZL Cubs edged the AZL A's 6-5 this morning at Fitch Park Field #3.

Cashner got the start and threw one inning, allowing one broken-bat opposite field single and one unearned run (the runner who reached base on the single came around to score on a stolen base, a passed ball, and an opposite field sac fly).

Cashner mixed a high-octane heater and biting slider in his one inning of work, striking out the first hitter he faced (looking) on an unhittable slider that crossed the outside corner, and the last hitter in the inning (swinging) on high heat. None of the A's hitters could get around on his pitches. They were behind on every swing. 

All in all and probably not too surprisingly, I would say Cashner acquitted himself quite well in his pro debut (to say the least), and he is probably not too long for Fitch Park. He should be in Boise in very short order.

He looks to be every bit as good as advertised. He reminds me somewhat of Max Scherzer, although Scherzer is more advanced at this point. . 

Offensively, the AZL Cubs juggernaut continued their offensive onslaught, as John Contreras, Nelson Perez, and Sean Hoorelbeke slammed back-to-back-to back solo home runs in the bottom of the 2nd, giving the Cubs a lead they would not relinquish. 

In their next ABs, both Contreras and Perez were plunked in the back with pitches (apparently A's starter Anvioris Ramirez was none too pleased about the AZL Cubs three long flies the first time up)  Fortunately the Cubs pitchers kept their cool and did not retaliate (at least not today...).

And so why do I call the AZL Cubs lineup a :"juggernaut"? I don't know. Maybe it's because Hoorelbeke, Perez, Contreras, and fellow AZL Cub Jericho Jones are now 1-2-3-4 in the AZL in OPS, Perez, Contreras, Hoorelbeke, and Jones are 1-2-3-4 in SLG %, Jones (hitting .409) and Hoorelbeke (hitting .403) are 1-2 in the AZL in BA, Perez and Contreras are tied for the AZL lead in HR with eight, Hoorelebeke is tied for 3rd with five, and Jones is tied for 5th with four, Perez and Contreras are 1-2 in RBI (Perez has 30 in 24 games played and Contreras has 25 in 23 games), Contreras leads the AZL in runs scored with 27, and Perez leads the AZL in triples with eight (in just 24 games!) and fellow AZL Cub Junior Lake is tied for 3rd in triples with four. 

As a team, the AZL Cubs lead the league in HR with 30 (the second best team has 15 HR), BA, SLG, OPS, runs scored, and hits, and the team is second in the league in doubles, triples, and OBP.

Other than that, the AZL Cubs offense just plain sucks.

teflon tim? that's for people that only care about the in-your-face cubs problems (of which there are at least 10,000,000...most of them elderly men). if you're only going to pay attention to the obvious, you guys are obviously pretty ignorant fans. the REAL cubs problem is the community affairs liaison coordinator Michael Lufrano. THAT'S RIGHT MIKE...I'M CALLING YOUR PUNK ASS OUT. if you idiots would get your heads out your computer geek asses you'd see how obvious it is. i don't know why i share space with you stupid people. geez...

Fantastic, I was hoping you were there for Cashner's debut. Thanks for the report! How has Larry Suarez looked, he's got 3 short appearances now in the AZL in the last week or so and his numbers look good. Do you think Suarez, Kitt Kopach or Cedric Redmond could be called up to Boise later this season or will they be in rehab mode the rest of the summer?

From looking at the Boise Hawks stats, Jones is the only of those four hitters that seems to have an "easy way", in my opinion, to Boise, since Kyler Burke is the RF in Boise, hitting .186 in 97 AB. As you mentioned before, sending him down to AZL could be the tip he needs to convert to pitcher, and show us what he's got there... Contreras has Vitters above him in Boise, and he's doing well up there. Perez has Rundle above him, who is hitting well, but was demoted from Peoria earlier in the season, after stinking it up up there. Hoorelbeke has Keedy above him, and he's not doing badly... not great, but not bad... There seem to be quite a few players that Cashner could replace pretty readily on the pitching staff...

RAISIN: Larry Suarez has looked really good, mainly because he's throwing strikes, which is somewhat unusual for a TJS rehabber just getting back into game action. His breaking ball and change-up are looking very good, and he is throwing his fastball for strikes. (The weird thing is, I don't remember him having particularly good control prior to the injury).

Kitt Kopach pitched again today and struggled with his command. He looks to be really laboring out there. He doesn't seem to be throwing very hard.

Cedric Redmond, though, has been outstanding. While he hung one and got tagged for a HR today (the first run he has allowed so far in six AZL games and 7+ IP), his fastball (with movement) & screwball combo make him a good candidate to join John Muller (who may have the best slider in the organization, IMO) and Dan McDaniel as the late innings guys at Boise.

BTW, Tennessee catcher Mark Reed is at Fitch Park rehabbing from a broken hand or finger (I'm not sure which).

Hi Phil, first time poster. On daytona's roster MiLB.com lists Billy Petrick as suspended. He'd been on the DL for weeks. Is he really suspended, and is he is why?

HOOK: I'm not exactly sure, but I can tell you that when a player is placed on his club's "Suspended List," it means he either refused to see a club doctor for a physical examination, or refused to engage in required rehab work, or refused to take the field when so ordered, or otherwise was patently insubordinate.

If the player is on a 40-man roster at the time he is placed on the Suspended List (as is the case with Petrick), he does continue to count against his club's 40-man roster. So when a player on a 40-man roster is placed on the Suspended List, he usally doesn't stay there for long. Either the problem is "resolved," or the player gets traded, released, or outrighted to the minors

The MLB "Suspended List" is a completely different list, and it is used for players who are suspended for violation of the prohibited substance ban, or as the result of an on-field incident (usually a fight). A player on a 25-man roster who is placed on the MLB Suspended List for any reason OTHER THAN a violation of the ban on prohibited substances cannot be replaced on his club's 25-man roster by another player and must remain on his club's active roster throughout the length of the suspension.

When a player on a 40-man roster is suspended by MLB for violation of the ban on prohibited substances, the player can be placed on his club's "Restricted List," which basically means the player has taken a club-approved Leave of Absence, usually without pay.

Players on the Restricted List do not count against the club's 40-man roster. A player can also be placed on the Restricted List when the player is attending school, or needs to attend to a pressing legal matter or family situation (not related to death or illness) during the season, as well as when a player fails to return a signed contract for the following season, or fails to report for Spring Training by the mandatory reporting date or to a minor league assignment within the required period.

If a player leaves his club during the season because of a death in the family or family illness, the player can be placed on his club's Bereavement List for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days. A player on the Bereavement List continues to get paid but does not count against his club's 25-man roster.

If a player on Bereavement Leave needs more time away beyond seven days (as happened with Cliff Floyd last season), the player can (with club approval) be transferred from the Bereavement List to the Restricted List, but then the club has the option to not pay the player for the period of time the player spends on the Restricted List.

Cashner & Hoorelbeke were promoted to Boise,and Julio Castillo was demoted to AZL Cubs ( I don't think he'll even see Mesa from the air when he eventually gets deported).

    For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

    That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.

    The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
    But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
    I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
    Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
    I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
    Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
    With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

    My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
    It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
    I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
    We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
    But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!

    Totally depends on the team and the player involved. If your team’s philosophy is to pay huge dollars to bet on the future performance of past stars in order to win championships then, yes, all of the factors you mentioned are important.

    If on the other hand, if the team’s primary focus is to identify and develop future stars in an effort to win a championship, and you’re a young player looking to establish yourself as a star, that’s a fit too. Otherwise your buried within your own organization.

    Your comment about bringing up Canario for the purposes of sitting him illustrates perfectly the dangers of rewarding a non-performing, highly paid player over a hungry young prospect, like Canario, who is perpetually without a roster spot except as an insurance call up, but too good to trade. Totally disincentivizing the performance of the prospect and likely diminishing it.

    Sticking it to your prospects and providing lousy baseball to your fans, the consumers and source of revenue for your sport, solely so that the next free agent gamble finds your team to be a comfortable landing spot even if he sucks? I suppose  that makes sense to some teams but it’s definitely not the way I want to see my team run.

    Once again, DJL, our differences in philosophy emerge!

    That’s just kinda how it works though, for every team. No team plays their best guys all the time. No team is comprising of their best 26 even removing injuries.

    When baseball became a business, like REALLY a business, it became important to keep some of the vets happy, which in turn keeps agents happy and keeps the team with a good reputation among players and agents. No one wants to play for a team that has a bad reputation in the same way no one wants to work for a company that has a bad rep.

    Don’t get me wrong, I hate it too. But there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

    On that topic, I find it silly the Cubs brought up Canario to sit as much as he has. He’s going to get Velazquez’d, and it’s a shame.

    Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.  

     

    At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.
