Pick the nickname

Below are the sixteen finalists from last week's Name That Double Play Combo contest.  If your submission is not on the list, it likely:

  • was too vulgar
  • was too copyrighted-ish/derivative
  • was too inside-jokey
  • was too stupid.

In all seriousness, there were a ton of good ideas.  I really didn't know what sort of response this would get, and I'm blown away by your collective creative efforts.  My "short" list started at thirty-six entries.  I originally planned on limiting the poll to a final eight.

If I have set this up this right, you should be able to rank your preferences in order, which should provide a better sense of our preferences than if you could only pick one.  We'll keep the voting open through next Sunday, and I'll announce the results on Monday.  I have removed names of the people who proposed the contributions, but don't worry, I know who you are!

You rank your top preference 1st, and keep going as far down as you want, all the way to 16th if you prefer.

(And yes, I made a couple uncharacteristic spelling errors in the entries.  Vote as if they were spelled correctly, it was my late-night rushed mistake.)

Sweet, it appears to be working.  Congrats again on all the fine ideas, my apologies to any and all snubs.

Just curious Trans. What was the reason for changing "Derrek and the Dominots" to "deux men ots" ?
At the very least "deux" "men" is redundant since (Tinkers to Evers to Chance) double play combinations consist of three players and "dominots" is plural.

And "Domino" is already French it doesn't need any help. The "ot" ending makes it Louisiana French as that spelling is regional. Domino is a type of "mask" in French, referring to the hooded capes and eye masks that were common at masked balls during celebrations like mardis gras. Dominoes are also playing pieces in a game, of course, which seems quite appropriate.

See the original thread.  Someone took your suggestion, modified it, and the modifications received some compliments.  One of the main factors I used in selecting the 16 was the presence or absense of nominations and positive feedback on the message board.  There are several nominations up there that are some sort of collaboration between an original idea by one poster and a refinement by a second poster.  I promise you'll share in the glory and fame if Derek/Derrek awins.

lame...

where's my submission?

The midget balling 2-of-7 Dwarves 3/44 take my wife, please!

this crap is fixed.

You misunderstand. That's the name they've already chosen. We're voting on runner up.

'Derek' is spelled incorrectly. All but 1, 10 and 12 would tend to create a discriminatory work environment for Theriot and the Fontenaught.

Whoops. Pretend it is a correct spelling. If it come in second place by one vote, you may pillory me.

If we're not going to go with Dingo and the Baby, then Scrap Pack is it.

Good work, Trans.

Thanks Trans. Something fun on an off-day.

Thanks guys, but again, most all of it is your work, just put into an organized form.  I didn't even double check the spelling on "Derrek," heh.

Results come next week.  Again, upon pain of death or pirates tickets, whichever is worse, we're obligated to use our new nickname for the rest of the season.  And it wouldn't be bad if we could make TCR and the winner some dough in the process, but I'll leave that issue up to the marketing geniuses behind TCR.  (Hint, Not Me.)

tabasco for entry 4, trans.

Dagnabbit!  Uncharacteristic sloppiness from me.  As with Derek/Derrek, assume that the spelling is corrected, before voting.

Bah. I'm still going to call them The Battin' Deluge.

I'll probably just continue to call them "Riot" and "Fontegod". It seems like those names stuck pretty well.

Failure to abide by new TCR approved nickname will result in shunning at parachat and a bi monthly visit from Chad at your place of residense and/or business.

Wait, gay Chad?

Dude. He already told you. Bi monthly.

Do I win some sort of prize if my nickname is chosen? A pat on the back? Rob puts me back in charge of parachat?

An of unusually hot prostitute is sent to an address of my choosing?

yes, yes, no, no

Thank you for your prompt response.

part of my hiatus was at the TCR Corporate Retreat at Wisconsin Dells where we focused on efficiency...and improving our gay Chad jokes.

Guess my e-vite got lost somewhere in the internets...

Weird.

everyone knows c-los should be in charge of parachat...he's immune from FBI prosecution that's inevitable from the links given in the chat.

Please, not Scrap Pack...

Don't you need more than 2 for a 'pack' anyway?

2Pac will bumrush your house, fool.

The two-pack of 55 gallon drums of honey I just picked up at Sam's Club think you're full of shit.

Clearly, I opened some wounds.

Scrap pack is just very... with the grain. I've come to expect more wit and creativity from this crowd.

it's too common!

Hey, anytime you want to stop critizing my creative genius would be fucking fantastic.

it's not my entry ok, but you gotta vote for it. i mean cmon, how can you vote for something that does NOT have a bit of french in it. that's like spelling jacques jones as jock. it's hideous. plus how can you not love a scooby doo reference? it's both american and french and funny all in one.

btw Trans, what's your scoring algorithm? 16 points for 1st, 1 for 16th?

The scoring algorithm is whatever the default setting is on the poll.  But yes, I would guess that you've got it exactly right there.

Anything with Scrap in it has got to go.

Peppy Le Two!

I didnt even post my idea: The Fingercuffs.

Its just fun to say.

"Cajun Shrimp" was my entry but I liked "Oui Men" and "Hammerin' Hobbits"

Since we're lobbying, I'll profess I'm in Omar's camp, with a little Ot Boys action thrown in there.

They're all pretty terrible except for Ry-not

That's constructive.

going to be our regular 2B for the whole season? He is starting to look overmatched. Would be a shame if we get a good nickname (Tiger Cubs is my choice) while Fontenot hits .230 with a marginal OBP and SLP and 100+ Ks.

Sample size alert!!!

but I am worried that the Fontenot/Miles combo isn't ready for full-time play. Hope I am wrong and Fontenot comes through as many expect.

Fontenot hasn't gotten that much to hit. Note his high walk rate. He's still got a .364 OBP, with which I am pretty happy. I think his bat will come around.

Baseball America reported that the Cubs released TeWayne Willis and Bubba O'Donnell, our 28th and 34th round picks from last year. Willis didn't appear to be much of a hitter (.196 avg, .205 slg at AZL) but did walk alot (.342 OBP) and was fast (10 SBs). Willis would turn 25 in October.

O'Donnell just turned 23 and was at Boise last season, where he was 6-3 3.97 with 2 svs (45.1 IP/49 H 20BB/36K).

I could understand Willis perhaps, but O'Donnell is surprising. Does anyone have any insight on these players and why they were released?

More than likely at that age, he was released do to injury. I remember Bobby Deeb (who had the most hits in the history of Brown University) was released after injury without hesitation.

Was there mention of the feat that Harden pulled off in his last start - retiring 9 batters without a ball-in-play out? 8K's and a baserunning put-out. Apparently, (with some restrictions in place) it had never been done in any game the past 55 years.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/hardens-o...

it was previously mentioned...a dubious feat indeed.

  • Manny Rondon faced 13 batters ... and got 10 to K. Not a bad day's work.

  • With several other Cubs hitters bailing out on curves today I think overall it wasn't being seen well. It for sure looked silly but a good breaking pitch coming at you and then breaking down isn't the easiest thing to see and has made many hitters look silly. Also Soler should have more walks this year but for quite a few called strikes that were actual balls and even the called strike he bailed on was borderline.

  • it's not like we're talking about a guy who's never had issues with pitch selection and seeing the ball over here. we're talking about a guy who has some rather legendary swing-and-misses at breaking stuff who's been exploited low. going forward it's worth paying attention to seeing if he can be exploited inside, too. he seriously bailed out of the box on a called strike. sure it was a good curve, but he obviously didn't see that well at all.

  • It would seem like he is figuring it out now and it's really coming together. Really happy for him. Joe was really protecting him from the 3rd time through the order, but as you allude to, he is earning trust to go deeper.

Wondering if has potential to become a #3 pitcher? His current stats certainly support it.

  • That doesn't count b/c CRUNCH didn't see it on his 60" HDTV 5 times in replay.

I have seen many players "bail out" when the ball looked like it was gonna hit them.

Especially with the advent of the splitter and pitchers that can really get the ball to dance. Marmol, Sutter, Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Derek Lowe, Smoltz, Arrietta...

These guys have made the best bail out only for the ball to come over the plate and be called a strike.

No shame in that. The same way players whiff hard enough to cause them to drill a hole in the ground from spinning.

  • a 60" TV with slow-motion replay and multiple looks on that replay helps...a lot...

it's one thing to shy away like he did the 2nd time, it's another to bail out of the box on a called strike. that happened in the 1st one he pulled away from. he misjudged that one by a foot or so...

  • Good Hendricks sure is fun to watch. He was hitting all his corners today and the Phillies couldn't do anything with his changeup.

johann 6 hours 6 min ago view
  • Bryant and I believe Zobrist both did that too.

  • Soler BB acumen and plate awareness is excellent. Not unusual for even the best players to react as if they were about to hit them, "even though they weren't that close" from your vantage point sitting on your deck, or wherever.

  • soler vs inside breaking balls is scary.

he's had 2 inside curve balls today where he reacted as if they were about to hit him even though they weren't that close...one he bailed out of the box on, it was a called strike.

  • j.urias optioned back to AAA...guess we wont be seeing him in the LAD series.

crunch 6 hours 51 min ago view
  • so is him actually getting 2 hits in a game (2 doubles!)...first time he's even been on base 2 times in a game since 9 games ago on his 3/4, 1bb day.

im ready for him to at least look like a 2-slot hitter since he's gonna be slotted there no matter what he does.

crunch 7 hours 47 min ago view
  • That Heyward move to avoid Bryant's ball hit at him was a thing of beauty too.

  • 9 pitches in and this game already rules.

HR, double...bryant's turn (who came out to a Kris Kross song for some horrible, horrible reason).

    ...2 run inning...zoobrest hitting streak at 14.

  • First time I saw Herrera was yesterday. He took like 100 pitches, fouled off a ton off Lester.

Very nice young player and perfect leadoff guy.

  • Obviously not Phil. But he mentioned this on Wednesday.

"Dominican Summer League (DSL) Opening Day is Saturday June 4th, so probably about 8-10 pitchers and position players presently at EXST in Mesa will be sent to the Cubs Dominican Academy (probably sometime this week) and be assigned to either DSL Cubs #1 or DSL Cubs #2."
