Cubs' Quotations of the Week

The Answer To Life, the Universe and Everything?
"That's a good question, really," - Lou Piniella on Milton Bradley not taking his 2-game suspension

A Massage from Chad?
"It feels real good."-  Angel Guzman(on his first win)

Cubs' Fans Have Been Waiting Even Longer for You
"Oh, finally, and the way that we won that game coming back from a deficit of 4-1 is good for the team, and I think it's going to give us a chance to start playing better baseball. Since 2006, waiting. Finally. I've got the ball in my locker. I'm going to give it to my mom." - Angel Guzman

It's Like Manny Being Manny, Just Not as Good
"Our bullpen situation is our bullpen situation." - Lou Piniella

Wes is Available
"[Saturday] was just ugly. They could've brought in anybody out of the stands to do what I did yesterday. It's one to forget about and move on."- Neal Cotts

There are Four Holes?
"He’s a well built guy and has an extremely muscular lower half. He’s susceptible to some tweaks and pulls. I think he’s OK. We’re being real cautious. I’m sure if it were late in the year he could’ve played this week. I’m certainly counting on him hitting in that four-hole most of the year. - Jim Hendry on Milton Bradley

What Happened to the Walk Everyone and Give Up a Big Hit Plan?
"I had a game plan. Every team I play on, I try to pay attention to my own hitters because you never know when you're going to face them. So I had an idea definitely of what I wanted to do, and I executed to the best of my ability today" - Jason Marquis after beating the Cubs

Beware of His Torture Techniques
"If I can get some secrets from them, yes, but I'm not giving any to them. I may sucker them into a couple things to say but they ain't getting nothing from me, that's for sure" - Aaron Miles on going out to dinner with former Cardinal teammates.

Feeling Too Good is Now an Excuse
"I think you just take something from the last start. I realize I might have felt too good and tried to do a little too much. I'll try to learn from that, learn to pace myself the next time and slow it down. That's one thing I've worked on the last couple of years." - Rich Harden

The Guy Getting the Rabies Shot Doesn't Agree
''I thought it was kind of funny when the cat bit the guy." - Derrek Lee

Try 2004-2006
''I don't really understand it. I don't know what he did to still be getting booed here.'' - Derrek Lee on the fans booing Dusty Baker

2004 Was a Really Good Team...Just Sayin'
''It wasn't his fault. I mean, nobody could manage that team we had in [2006]. We had guys coming from AA. [Carlos] Marmol was a starter. We had Juan Mateo -- you guys don't even remember him, probably. We just had a bad team, and it's not his fault. ''If you give Dusty a good team, I guarantee, he'll be in the playoffs, too.' - Aramis Ramirez on Dusty Baker

But Let's Be Clear, I'm Kind of Awesome
"You have to look at the sample size. That can fluctuate, go up and down pretty quickly with the few at-bats I have. So I'm not going to start pinching myself until I'm five or six years in, and if something like this is still going on, sure I'll look back and say 'Yeah, I've done a pretty good job.' "But not right now. I'm trying to stay as humble as possible and just go out and play as hard as I can." - Micah Hoffpauir

Don't Think About Peeing on Your Hands, No Matter the Weather
''I thought about it, but it was too cold.'' - Alfonso Soriano on thinking about throwing a tantrum on the foul ball in the Bartman seat

I Blame Sullivan
''Basically, for me, I talk to people I like. I don't particularly like the media, and the media doesn't like me. So let's not pretend we're buddies or you're trying to do anything for me. If anything, you hurt me more than help. So I don't see any benefit of really talking to the media. That's just how I feel. That's how I've always felt.'' - Milton Bradley

''I can see already I'm going to be that guy that since nothing else is going on in here, 'We're going to harp on Bradley all year and see if we can get him to snap. I'm not going to go for it. You can't get a good story if I don't talk to [the media]. You'll make something up, like you always do.''- Milton Bradley

All Those Problems Created by Making Millions and Millions of Dollars
"I never had a problem in my life until I started playing baseball. All of a sudden, there are all these things. I just want to be me. I just want to be that guy who plays baseball and enjoys his teammates and has a good time. That's what I do." - Milton Bradley

Short-Handed
''We got more infielders than we thought.'' - Lou Piniella on Koyie being the backup at 3b, Soriano at 2b and Fukudome at SS.

How Many of You Are Impressed that Lou Actually Knew it was Modesto?
''It's not easy with what we're asking him to do. ... But you can't walk people in front of Pujols. You might be able to do that in Modesto. But over here, I would suggest not.' - Lou Piniella on Patton's outing on Saturday

Interesting Definition of Try
"We said we'd try it and we did." - Lou Piniella on Soriano batting third for two games

Call me if you need me, Jim! I can do back-to-back walks with no outs and a 1 run lead for a LOT less than $1.1M. I also have an affinity for pink backpacks and giving up home runs. I'll fit right in!

''I thought it was kind of funny when the cat bit the guy." - Derrek Lee + ''I thought about it, but it was too cold.'' - Alfonso Soriano on thinking about throwing a tantrum on the foul ball in the Bartman seat = bwhahaha.

Serious question: Would D Lee consider waiving his no-trade clause to go "home" to the Giants or A's? And if he would, is it feasible for either team to want his contract? Would Hendry even have the balls to consider it? Both SF and Oakland need offense at 1B (badly), and the Cubs have Micah, who's a better power hitter than Lee at this point in his career. I think Hoffpauir is nearly as good with the glove at 1B to boot. That would shake up this team some! It would be nice if Hendry could swing a replacement for Fontenot in exchange, and push Fonty back to bench where he's a much better asset. I also strongly endorse Phil's plan for dumping Bradley at the earliest possible opportunity. It was a risky idea, it was a bad idea, and it will kill this team unless Hendry can cut the cord. I'd get Jimmy Ballgame on the horn and make sure he's getting himself into shape. I'm trying to re-build the 2008 team here as best I can. Why the hell did the Cubs feel the need to ruin a good thing? In the interest of being "more left-handed"?? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Yes, lets' bring back Edmonds, and while we're at it why not Clement, Sosa, Alou and Prior? Teams that try to bring back the same team that had a great run the previous year, almost always fail. You have to recognize when you get 'lightning in a bottle' like Edmonds. Then, you don't do the stupid thing like the Cards did after they won the WS and bring Edmonds back, paying him $9.5 million to slug .400 - you shake his hand and let him go, and realize you got lucky. You do realize that the Cardinals had to pay San Diego to take Edmonds off their hands, right?

DLee update from the sun-times: Lee said the injury is the result of a bulging disc that occasionally flares up on him, causing him to miss a week two seasons ago and a few days last season. ''It doesn't so much hurt as it just locked up on me again,'' said Lee, who hopes to play tonight. ''I just woke up funny. It's nothing serious.'' http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/1545402,CST-SPT-cub27.arti… ------- damn those StL hotels with crappy pillows...DLee implys that it was bothering him before the game started (I woke up funny...ta-da, boom)

$100 from me to Cubs charities if we see a Fuki to Sori to Lee DP this year. Pitching wins games. Based on what we've seen so far in MLB this year, who's ready for that KC v. PIT World Series?

For sure. This lineup isn’t exactly stacked as is, and subbing out a Cooper or even a Tauchman for Madrigal won’t do it any favors.

the ESPN bottom graphic taking up 1/8th of the screen sucks.

i only use ESPN during baseball season and i'm forced to watch a baseball broadcast designed to be broadcast in sports bars and betting parlors where the news/scores of other games is as important as what you're actually tuned in to watch.

morel triple to start the season....yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah

  • Arizona Phil (view)

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

  • crunch (view)

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

  • Eric S (view)

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

  • crunch (view)

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.
