5th Inning Funny Business Afoot at Fitch

Just missing a grand slam HR, 18-year old Korean OF Jae-Hoon Ha clubbed a bases-loaded triple high off the left-centerfield fence to cap a five-run 5th, and fellow 18-year old Korean Hak-Ju Lee (presently rehabbing from 2008 TJS at Fitch Park) doubled twice and drove-in two runs, as the EXST Cubs outlasted the EXST A's 10-7 at Fitch Park Field #3 this morning in hot & sunny Mesa, AZ.

19-year old RHP Tarlandus Mitchell had the most-impressive outing of the four Cubs pitchers who worked today, tossing 2.2 IP of hitless ball. Mitchell may be only 5''8, but his mid-90's fastball really packs a wallop. The young Texan was an all-state football player (QB/DB) as well as a two-way star baseball player (P/OF) at Alto HS before getting drafted by the Cubs in the 22nd round of the 2008 Rule 4 Draft. He fell to the 22nd round only because he was considered a "tough sign" who was more-likely to play college football than pro baseball, but the Cubs are no doubt glad he chose a career in baseball.

Converted 3B Josh Lansford (son of Carney Lansford) also got an inning of work today and looked good, retiring the side 1-2-3 with one strikeout. Although his father and uncles were MLB third-basemen, his brother is a pitcher in the A's organization, and so maybe it's not surprising that Josh looks like a natural on the mound.

Here is today's abridged box score (Cubs players only):

LINEUP:
1. Francisco Guzman, DH #1:  2-4 (L-5, K, 1B, BB, 2B - 1 R)
2. Jose Valdez, CF: 1-4 (F-8, BB, 1B, K, L-6 - 2 R)
3a. Matt Cerda, C: 1-1 (BB, 1B, BB - 2 R, SB)
3b. Juan Medina, C: 0-2 (L-8, 4-3)
4. Ryan Keedy, 1B: 1-3 (1B, BB, BB, 4-3, 1-3 - 1 R, 1 RBI)
5. Logan Watkins, 2B: 0-3 (K, FC, BB, F-9 - 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SB, 1 CS)
6. Jesus Morelli, RF: 0-4 (6-3, 6-3, K, F-9)
7. Jae-Hoon Ha, LF: 1-3 (HBP, 6-3, 3B, 5-3 - 1 R, 3 RBI)
8. George Matheus, 3B: 1-4 (F-9, 1B, K, 6-3 - 1 R)
9. Robert Bautista, SS: 1-3 (1B, F-8 SF, K, 4-3 - 1 R, 1 RBI)
10. Hak-Ju Lee, DH #2: 2-4 (2B, K, 2B, 4-3 - 2 RBI)

PITCHERS:
1. Jon Nagel - 3.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 0 K, 2 GIDP, 1 WP, 1 PO, 5/3 GO/FO
2. Josh Lansford - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 1/1 GO/FO
3. Tarlandus Mitchell - 2.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 3 K, 3 WP, 1/4 GO/FO
4. Eduardo Figueroa: 1.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R (4 ER), 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP, 1/2 GO/FO
NOTE: Figueroa's innings in both 8th & 9th were stopped before three outs after he reached the maximum pitch count for that inning ("roll it!").

ERRORS: NONE

I don't even remember Mitchell being drafted. Signability issues aside any idea where he would have gone (3rd or 4th?).

5'8" and throwing mid90s at age 19.

ha. neat.

sori, riot, fuky, rami, hoff, milt, font, soto, lilly.

REAL NEAL: Supposedly somewhere in the Top 10 rounds.

Wow, lot of x's on the bullpen usage chart for Marmol & Gregg. Only off day was Lou's faux off day Tuesday.

they pitched 5 out of 6 days in a row for 100-120 pitches...got a 7th day off, marched out on day 8.

it's weird how they're both being used together to me. i wonder if they hold hands on the bench.

Let's hope they are not holding hands on the DL in September when their arms are falling off from overuse.

Speaking of arms falling off after tonight's performance I am guessing two more appearences until Fox's arm falls off again. Not pretty!!

Russ Ortiz is old. And sucks.

russ ortiz is old and sucks but he also looks like he has lost alot of weight if i remember he was definatly heavier
before some of his injurie problems hmmmmmmmmmmm

juice=injuries=weight loss?

Well well well fellas. This is a little more like it. I'm not the stats hound most of you are but I bet the walk ratio is creeping up a bit. A little more patience at the plate, and you can start teeing off. Nice.

Right now the team has 2 issues that they need to work on:

1. The last few spots in the bullpen. I've got a feeling we are going to see just about everyone from Iowa or free agents before this thing is settled.

2. Hitting with runners in scoring position. I don't know the numbers but they can't be very good. It seems like we have more bases loaded walks than hits. Part of this will work itself out when Bradley and Soto get going.

Tomorrow it will be interesting to see Wells, but the expectations are low.

The relief on Bradley's face when he got that single with runners on was painfully apparent. Now if he will just relax and quit trying to jerk everything out of the park, maybe he'll get going.

I assume he's just pressing, but for a guy with great patience, he's been hacking at everything lately.

The spring training/first week Bradley needs to come back.

so i guess the question is what is the roster move friday?

lee to dl
gathright to iowa
scales to iowa
fox to surgeon

I don't believe Gath would take an Iowa assignment.

He is bad, though.

Fox - I like the other one. Happy to return this one.

Keep Scales.

I think Jim Hendry has to finally let Chad go on his merry way.

Enough.

Fox had good stuff tonight. Was throwing 94 and the slider looked good. I think he was just really amped up. He was overthrowing everything very badly.

Gotta at least give him more than one outing. Would have helped if Gathright hadn't cost him about 5 bases with two bad plays.

Marmol was nice, too tonight, although what do I know I didn't pitch anywhere like you did. But I noticed he was pretty much delivering where Soto was spotting him. Of course, when he's really on the ball dives but Soto is so fucking good at bringing the mitt up that I sometimes wonder if he was why Cubs minor league pitchers had such a good rep for years. I mean, shit, the dude can pick a downward facing slider that's heading for the dirt and push it up and make it look like a strike? That's fucking art.

I was watching on Gameday so I didn't see the plays in CF. But I was wondering if these were plays that shoulda/coulda been made.

Seems like Fox didn't have the same benefit as Lilly, who (again, according to Gameday) looks like his ass was SAVED by some well-placed moon shots that landed 435 feet away, but still in the park.

(please look past the poor syntax of that last sentence).

Who wants donuts?

Yeah, Fukudome made those catches, Gathright was afraid of the wall and pulled up on one (which then put him too close to the wall, letting it bounce off for a triple) and then didn't call it and pulled up for fear of running into Soriano and let the ball drop between them. Not good.

I've seen Scales for two years now in spring training and he just looks like a baseball player. Got a nice even, and pretty quick swing (on Scoriano scale where Scoriano is 10 I would say a 6) and has range and a decent arm. I have no opinion on Gathright cuz he just hasn't exposed himself that much to me. LOL.

The Fox slider was a thing of beauty, magnificent to behold - swg

I really like the way this Mitchell guy plays. He's definitely short but that doesn't mean he can't toss the ball. Baseball suit him well.

  • "Like the Chapman deal for Cubs from on-field POV, wish I didn't now have to feel lousy following an otherwise likable Cubs team." @jonahkeri

pretty much sums up my feelings

  • You mean Yankees?

  • Cards lose!

  • You do have a point. The TheoJed certainly would need to address this in a transparent way. Milton Bradley was no help to the team.

The E-Man 23 min 13 sec ago view
  • FWIW, the Cubs would get a compensation draft pick between the 1st & 2nd rounds (around #35) if they extend a Qualifying Offer to Chapman post-2016 (probably about $17M), Chapman declines, and then he signs with another MLB club before next year's draft.

  • This all assumes Chapman doesn't want to be a free agent and possibly sign a $20MM+/year deal. We all know free agents get overpaid, sometimes dramatically (Hello, JayHey!). Not sure why Chapman would agree to the extension. If i'm is agent, I would tell him I could get I'm a $100M deal as a FA.

  • I'll root for the uniform and imagine it's left-handed Rod Beck or Randy Myers out there I suppose.

  • Amen to this. I guess it's gonna happen and I'm gonna have to suck it up but I really despise domestic abusers with every bone in my body and cannot stand them on any team I root for.

  • I just prefer they don't  acquire players that choke their wives/girlfriends.

Rob G. 1 hour 12 min ago view
  • So you'd rather go with Blown Save guy, when you can trade a prospect who is blocked for one piece that could get you over the top to the Big Dance? That is pretty old thinking. This is not a move that they cannot recover from if it goes south. But the upside is potentially historic.

The E-Man 1 hour 21 min ago view
  • I'd prefer it not happen too.

Rob G. 1 hour 48 min ago view
  • it's a hell of a blockbuster, but it's for a guy who pitches 1/3rd of a season at an extreme premium considering the guy being traded and if the early extension $$$ rumors are true.

it's one of those things that is bringing a guy at the top his game, but something is nagging me that this trade piece could have been put to better use.

a huge part of me is all "hell yeah, top of the line producer"...another part of me is "hmm, that for that?"

  • Still don't want. Kinda hope they can't work out the extension.

Charlie 2 hours 3 min ago view
  • obviously not, and I'm sure they did their homework...just hope they have some better answers than the Yankees

Rob G. 2 hours 3 min ago view
  • Chapman 12+ Career WAR. Currently 4.7:1 k-BB. With Rondon/Chapman/Strop/Nathan/Montgomery/Wood...Its the best pen I can recall other than Sutter or Lee Smith handling things themselves.

Its gonna suck if he gets injured, and it appears he's not the greatest of characters.

But, he'll have another Cuban to hang out with on the team.

The E-Man 2 hours 25 min ago view
  • I agree with the names you mention but there are lots of names being tossed around still and there's that small matter of Chapman agreeing to the extension.
