Ten Extra-Base Hits Do the Trick for Cubs at Fitch Park

Dwayne Kemp had three hits (including two triples) and drove in four runs, Chris Weimer slugged three doubles and drove-in three runs, Logan Watkins had three hits and two RBI, and Kevin Soto had three hits and an outfield assist, leading the EXST Cubs to a 12-3 drubbing of the EXST Angels at Fitch Park Field #3 this morning in hot & sunny Mesa.

A native of Rotterdam, Kemp was the second player signed by the Cubs out of the MLB European Baseball Academy (Italian RHP Alessandro Maestri was the first) and was a member of the Team Netherlands provisional roster for the WBC, and like Cubs 2B Mike Fontenot, the 5'8 might-mite really packs some punch. Both of Kempy's triples today were opposite field shots slammed off the right-centerfield fence.

20-year old Venezuelan RHP Robert Hernandez, who is at EXST rehabbing from a sprained ankle suffered in a game at Papago Park the last week of Minor League Camp, pitched two innings today and showed no ill effects. Several of his family and friends were at the game today, and he looks to be about ready to move up to Daytona.

And LHP Chris Siegfried, who was left at Fitch Park at the end of Minor League Camp to work on his mechanics and revamp his delivery, has been promoted to Peoria.

Here is today's abridged box score (Cubs players only):

AZ Phil....It looks like these guys wore themselves out running the bases today in that heat. Even though some of these players were disappointed at not being assigned to a team at the break of spring training in March, it looks like they are working very hard at getting out of Mesa. Thanks for your reports and keep them coming !

Thanks, Phil!

A question I'd love for you to chew on (out loud, mouth open) for us...

Have you seen an appreciable difference in talent at Mesa and in the minors since Wilken and his people took over?

And/or with Fleita's leadership?

(and how much do people like Hendry, Fleita, and Wilken coordinate their efforts?)

I know it's a little early to tell still, and I don't know if it's just because I'm more knowledgeable about the Cubs minor leaguers than I was several years ago, but it seems like there is more talent up and down the farm system than in years past.

AZ Phil -

A lot of us in Boise are excited to see how Casey Kopitzke is doing as a first-year manager. How is he handling the team during the Extended Games?

Keep up the great work

he got so close yet too far away...damn lack of power.

didn't even know he was part of the coaching/managing staff now. sweet.

Hey Phil -

Thanks for the reports. I was wondering if you could post a roster of the players at EST? There are some players who haven't played in the last few games that you have posted that I am wondering if they are in Arizona, have been released, or sent to the Dominican, etc. Also, are any of the injured players close to being ready to be activated by their clubs (Robert Hernandez, etc.)? Thanks!!!

Good to see Dwayne Kemp had a good day - it'll be interesting to see how he handles Boise this season. How did he look defensively?

FALCON: Justin Bristow and Chris Siegfried were promoted to Peoria, Jake Opitz, Francisco Guzman, and Ryan Keedy have been promoted to Daytona, and Dumas Garcia was traded to Toronto.

Interesting.

So Keedy jumps Ridling? Was this expected?

Keedy jumped Ridling and Guzman jumped Jones.......it's tough to figure out what goes through the minds of the powers that be. Kurt Calvert got so frustrated with their moves he hung up his spikes and left the team.

  • Also -- despite losing 6 of their last 10, the Cubs picked up a game on both STL and PIT during that period. Weird, given that they swept PIT and were swept by STL.

  • Also, I'd like to know if there are numbers to back up my suspicion that there are a lot more fast starts than late June romps. This seems like a time where everybody not named Willson Contreras is looking a little tired and/or banged up a bit.

For once, the Cubs got off to a fast start. Seems like I've been waiting for that for 50 years.Everybody is really gunning for this team, too. It's their playoffs.

  • He reminds me of a little of a young guy currently on the Cubs' DL, who is also tank-like in appearance.

  • Yep...sort of. Matheny says Rosenthal will no longer pitch the 9th, and they will mix/match Oh, Siegrist and Broxton.

  • Duane Underwood now 0-5 with a 5.44 ERA for Tenn. Urp. Warren not sharp at Iowa tonight. When will Cease and Hudson be ready?

On a positive note, Jiminez with his 10th HR tonight. He has a .924 OPS -- the only player in the league with an OPS over .900. Leads the lead in 2B, SLG and OPS, tied for the league lead in HR and 3rd in Avg. Nice!

  • - The pressure of going for the regular-season wins record is now gone.
    - Joe will come up with more wacky dress-up ideas for the team to wear after they lose their next get-away game.
    - There is more clarity on Spencer Patton.
    - We play the Reds next. They aren't very good.
    - We'll have at least a 9 game lead after today.
EDIT: - Contreras looks like the real deal.

Other than that, not much -- nasty stretch. Two ugly losses in the last 4 games.
Ugh -- give Lackey a 4-1 lead, you hope for better.
