The Uncomfortable Reunion

(Hallway somewhere in Wrigley Field, two players emerge from the visiting team's clubhouse dressed to the nines in their gray road uniforms)

KW: Man, I sure miss this place...this city.

MD: Well, when you move to Cleveland, there's a good chance you'd miss living in Kazakhstan.

(They share a laugh as a portly gentleman comes towards them, head down, cell phone glued to ear)

JH: Yes, Andy...I'll be sure to pick up the dry cleaning, and pick-up dinner...glad you're flying in this weekend. How's Rich and Felix doing? They ever ask about me?

(Lost in conversation, the two parties bump into each other)
JH: Oh sorry, excuse me...

(He looks up, his heart stopping for a moment, he puts the phone away before finishing his conversation on the other line)

JH: I got to go Andy...

KW: Oh hey...

JH: Hey guys....wow, didn't expect to see you...figured you'd be busy visiting old friends and family and stuff.

MD: Um yeah, got the game today and all (gesturing towards the field).

JH: Right, right...yeah...so how are things going? I haven't been really able to keep up...you guys look great.

KW: Oh thanks...(forcing a compliment) you too.

JH: So are they treating you good in Cleveland?

MD: Sure, not the season we expected, but they've been good to us.

JH: Yeah, not the season we expected either, I can relate.

(they share an uncomfortable laugh...you can see KW and MD itching to say more but they resist...an uncomfortable silence fills the air...JH finally fakes like his cell phone is vibrating)

JH: Oh look at there, got a call, I got to take this...

KW: Oh, alright...well it was great to see you.

JH: You guys too...it was really great to see you..

(they slowly walk away in opposite directions, KW and MD towards the field, JH sulks to inner bowels of Wrigley...as he reaches the end of the corridor he looks back, hoping they look back to, trying to muster the courage to say something...a small tear wells up in his eye)

JH: (under his breath) I miss you guys...

KW & MD:  (walking onto the field, the buzz of the stadium making it too loud to hear JH) Jack-ass!

(END SCENE)

Listening to the Comcast interview with DeRosa just pisses me off all over again. When the trade was made I was willing to give Hendry the benefit of the the doubt-- though I hated to see him go. Now as things have turned out as of yet.... What a stupid move. Maybe those arms the Cubs got in the deal will pay off? Who knows. All I know is DeRosa's production and clubhouse presence would make a huge impact on this sad sack team.

I'd like to be on the Wrigley grounds crew. What a job. I imagine people asking, "Where do you work?". Wrigley. Wrigley Field. I don't think I'd ever get sick of it. My family would have to go on food stamps, but sacrifices have to be made sometimes.

They have that Groundskeeper for a Day contest. For my part, I couldn't imagine wanting to enter a contest where I had to go do somebody's job for a day. Especially at a Cubs game where I'd rather be watching the game. But it sounds like there are folks out there who would be interested. Might be right up your alley.

Cubs look like they don't belong on the same field as the Tribe -- and Cleveland is 10 games under .500. Big Mo!

Any suggestions for a team I can adopt for the rest of the summer? I'll still root for the Cubs, but I'd like to have some fun following baseball too.

his control is sketchy (hey, welcome to the Cubs), but nice movement on his fastball and a nice breaking pitch.

didn't beat it out, but was going full out on a grounder up the middle. Maybe time to try him in CF here and there and get Fox(0 for 3 vs. the lefty today) and Hoffpauir(not like he's hitting either) in there on occasion. Fox hasn't killed anyone behind the 1st base dugout today either...so there's some good news. I only saw one chance myself.

great scene, rob...only change I'd make would be KW & MD farting in unison w/ lifted legs instead of saying "jack-ass..."

I was a trade-hater from day one, yo. I don't even hate Bradley, or anything; the moment Aaron Miles was signed my blood began to boil.

“I respect his track record of what he’s accomplished,” Counsell said on Sunday morning. “And you go through these. He’s gone through -- maybe not this particular stretch -- but stretches where you’re not pitching the way you want to and struggling. And you figure it out.” -- Counsell on Hendricks

    fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

i respect his track record of no longer being in the rotation.  in 2016 he threw 2 innings out of the pen, his only work out of the pen.  the cubs won the world series that year.  let's repeat that magic.  the formula is obvious.  stats don't lie.  etc etc whatever...

small sample size and all, but how about this craziness...

"Entering Sunday, Hendricks had allowed an .843 OPS against hitters in their initial plate appearance, followed by a 1.056 OPS in a second meeting and a 2.449 OPS when seeing batters for a third time."

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

  • crunch (view)

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song.

In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.

Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

ooof...this is just as likely as anything.  professional organists are weird humans.

  • SheffieldCornelia (view)

Maybe it is only played when the hitter thus far in the game is "oh for two"-na at the plate?

  • crunch (view)

who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.
