Father's Day: Darren Baker asks the question...and Dusty has no answers

Roster Update: Angel Guzman to the DL with a right triceps strain, Kevin Hart called up from Iowa.

Happy Father's Day everyone.

I've mostly been shoulder shrugging since the story came out that Sammy Sosa was on the positive test list for PED's that the MLB Players Association didn't destroy. To me it was old news. After the "Steroid Era" cloud passes and everyone in it washs off the stink, I wonder what will be the impact on what baseball should consider one of it's most important assets, the kids who fall in love with the game because of their father's (or mom's, but today is father's day) love of the game.

On this father's day, one of the things I treasure most is that my son is a Cubs fan and a Baseball fan. So when I read this brief Fred Mitchell article in the Tribune, it made more impact on me than when the Sammy news was leaked in the NY Times.

"The worst part for me is that I don't know what to tell my son [Darren]," the Reds manager said after Saturday's Civil Rights Game luncheon at the Duke Energy Center. "He asks me, 'Dad, are there any good hitters not on something?' I just tell him that everyone is under suspicion. I will just be glad when it's all over."

From the previous era of baseball scandal, when gambling almost ruined the game, Shoeless Joe Jackson, supposedly was asked by  a young fan who's hero was involved in the throwing of the 1919 World Series, leading to the now infamous quote:  "say it ain't so, Joe."

So when Dusty Baker was asked the modern day version of this question, he answers with questions:

"Who knows if it's real or not," Baker said. "And if it is real, still, what do you say?"

Before Sosa, manager Baker's tenure in San Francisco was clouded by the most obvious player with body shape changes,  it seems that if he was paying attention, he should have had a clue as to what was going on with Sammy.

Asked if he was aware of Sosa's alleged steroid use with the Cubs, Baker replied:

"I had no way of telling because I had never seen it. They asked me the same thing in San Francisco. I don't think any manager knows."

Tough Questions. Unsatisfying answers. It brings to mind the proverb attributed to the 3 wise monkeys, See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. From now on, I'll just file that proverb in the outhouse with Monkey see, Monkey do.

Angel Guzman finally makes it back to the DL (right triceps strain). Kevin Hart called up.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_relea...

SHIT! SHIT!

He is finally having his best MLB year, and he goes on the DL! UGH!!

Heal Fast, dude!

I don't think that's a big deal because it sounds like he basically pitched through it yesterday. While we were blowing our lead in the 7th, Len said he wasn't available due to some soreness, then he came in and pitched 2 innings later.

Especially going into AL ballparks, you'd like to have your bullpen at full strength, so I think this move makes a lot of sense if he was going to be down for a week or so anyways.

I hope so, WES.

"I had no way of telling because I had never seen it. They asked me the same thing in San Francisco. I don't think any manager knows."

Nice answer Dusty, it's pretty much a set answer for him.

Why do you burn out young arms?
Why can't you win with best team in league?
Why can't you control your players?

BTW - Lineups???

Dusty's no different than LaRussa in this regard - last time a reporter had the temerity to wonder aloud to LaRussa's face how he could have possibly missed McGuire's steroid use, he angrily walked away. They're not going to ever face up to their parts in the whole charade, we might as well get used to it.

Soriano Theriot Bradley Lee Soto Fox(3B) Fukudome Blanco Wells
v.
Carroll DeRosa Martinez Choo Peralta Valbuena Gimenez(1B) Francisco Sowers

Reed Johnson not playing vs lefty Sowers, his back "locked up" on him. He does have a history of lumbar (lower) back surgery in 2007, so it acts up on occaision

1 game out of 2nd place...still 2.5 back out of first.

Wow, Jake Fox apparently a baseball geek. I like it.

This is going to annoy me. Lou just said he was going to rest some people tomorrow. I really don't understand why you disturb things after winning 4 in a row. Ride it out, then rest some people. Blah.

On pregame he said probally soriano and theriot not starting monday.

who's gonna lead off? soto's ob% is up to .332 so it's a bit too high even though the power is starting to show. dlee's got the power to lead off, but his ob% is too high. should be a tough decision. =p

what about Reed Johnson?

low-ish ob% and a touch of power...but he does have a bad back slowing him down so yeah, he'd be an option...too bad it's not a leg injury or he'd be a no-doubter. hehe...

If I rember what Len said during the game correctly, Bradley wont be in the starting line-up either. Given Reed's injury and the benchings I am imaging the line-up will be:

Fuku/Fonty
Fonty/Fuku
Lee
Soto
Hoffpauir
Fox
Blanco
Miles

Hope Demp has no-hitter stuff or it gets rained out again.

i'm just glad it's a night game. i've only been able to catch bits/pieces of these day games lately.

First sweep in over a month ... it feels so good. Let's keep it going on this road trip now.

Angels with some serious cubbery on ESPN... load the bases, 0 out, Abreu, Hunter, Guerrero due up, Abreu grounds into a 1-2-3 DP and Hunter pops out on the infield. 0 runs. Unreal.

ESPN also let sarge jr. cut a promo with interviews of him and father talking baseball for a segment.

must suck to be shunned by the establishment for all that involvement with PEDs.

wait...

more info on...

Angel Guzman (would be out 5 days but with long stretch without days off they couldn't afford to be without a pitcher)

more on Reed Johnson's weak/week back

Z goes directly to Detroit, skips Atlanta... to get his beauty rest

Rothschild away for funeral of a cousin

and Dempster's baby daughter leaving the hospital tuesday.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/16331...

Sounds like a tough road a head for the Dempster family. Here's hoping their little baby is going to be alright.

So Aaron Poreda sees Frank Thomas (who is a broadcaster now, apparently) interviewing another player and says, "That's a big guy, he should be an athlete." LOL! Hilarious, yet it occurs to me that Poreda probably didn't grow up with Frank Thomas and I did. Thanks for making me feel old, pecker.

So Cowley confirmed it was Poreda?

Someone confirmed it, I don't know who it was.

I can't believe this team is 2.5 out. What a crappy division.

I can't believe this team is 2.5 out
---
The division is worse than that, the Cubs are tied for first in the loss column. Stl has played 5 more games.

The league isn't so hot either, after the Dodgers...the Cubs are also tied for 1st in the loss column for the Wildcard.

  • Giants scare me. I think you're wrong about Bumgarner, he would pitch on short rest for Game 2 and then full rest for Game 5. Cueto would go Game 1, then short rest in game 4. Add in some really tough outs in that lineup and I want nothing to do with them. With that rotation they can easily steal a series.

Cards are a tough matchup. The rivalry evens out their comparable lack of talent. And like someone said, they love HRs, which is how to beat the Cubs. The upside is that I would feel really good about Lester twice against STL.

  • Right now, I'd like to see the Mets first, Giants 2nd.

I believe that since most of the team from last years' NLCS is on the squad this year, they will really amp their game up even more to kick their ass in payback for 2015.

The Giants just do not have the depth in years past, and I think all things equal - and at Wrigley - they could handle them.

I do not want to see the Cards, period. Or their fans, media, or Joe Buck.

  • I don't want to play Braves in the first round. Any friggin team in the league can win 3 of 5..I hate the first round. Furthermore, I wanted to play the Marlins in 2003 and the Mets over Dodgers last year.

With that said in reverse order:
    3. Cardinals: It will be devastating to lose in the first round, but even worse to their main rival. It is increased incentive for the Cardinals, especially after last year. Cards would have nothing to lose, Cubs have everything to lose.

    2. Giants: Rotation in the playoffs scare me a bit, but what a lousy team.

  • 1. Mets--because of the losses in the rotation
    2. Giants--because they're not the team they were BUT they maybe have bullshit even-year magic?
    3. Cardinals--because rivalry and not making the playoffs hurts them more than losing in the NLDS plus getting eliminated by them in the playoffs would make for horrible sports commentary next throughout next season.

CLE/DET rained out last night already, possible rain-outs in New York (vs. Baltimore), Boston(vs. Toronto) and Philly(vs. Mets) this weekend too.

Not only games involving playoff spots that would need to be played, but any that involve home field advantage.

  • any opponent preference for NLDS?

Mets are down to 1 great pitcher instead of 4. Syndegaard may pitch Sunday which means if Mets win the WC game, he'd be set up for Game 1. There's a chance they clinch a spot by Sunday so he'd pitch the WC and then we'd probably get Colon for Game 1. They've certainly had the hottest bats over the last week and month out of the WC options.
