The Cubs take a five game winning streak back to the Friendly Confines and a chance to extend their five game lead in the Central with 19 of 28 games at home through the month of August. Marquis goes against the third best offense in the NL, but that was before the trades of Jason Bay and Xavier Nady.

Nice work, Chad.

I don't think that offense is the third best in the NL anymore.

Not sure that offense is the third best in AAA anymore.

Nice, Wes... and just for having said that, watch the Bucs put up about 9 or 10 today....
I also predict that this pitcher will absolutely mystify the Cubs hitters...

Interesting defense today. That'd be a pretty major pull shift against righties, fielding two CF and two SS instead of having a 2B and RF. It'll be interesting to see how this strategy works.

I am such an ass. Rob G. was obviously just in a hurry. But I'm fairly certain Mighty Mike is playing 2B not CF, and Fukie is playing RF not SS.

Bah...thnx for catching that.

I really Weeksed that one.

Weeksed (verb): to fuck up something routine.

synonyms: Brewered, Kendalled, Barretted, Brauned, Dustyed

LMAO!!!!!

"Weeksed"

HAHA!

You forgot "Ugglad."

I did indeed, although I think definition for Uggla'd is more:

to fuck up something vastly important for a large group of people that you're not a part of...

with a 21.2 IP scoreless streak going since mid-June out of the bullpen in Daytona.

http://cubs.scout.com/2/774298.html

credits it with tweaking his slider and pitching more inside.

Ryan Dempster pushed the Brewers to the brink of being swept Wednesday night with another strong effort, setting the stage for Harden, who compared their performances to when he was younger with Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito in Oakland."You kind of feed off each other. You see every starter going out there and doing really well, and you want to match them," Harden said. "I think it is contagious. ... It's a pretty amazing staff here."

MArquis?

C'mon - he is the architypal 5th starter (wh cannot be traded, evidently)

Nope, nothing left for Marquis to feed off of.

meh!

Has a starting pitcher ever been DFA'd in the middle of a start?

I think Russ Ortiz was actually mid-motion when they DFA'd him.

Was this mentioned already?

Wuertz pitched three innings in Colorado Springs Wednesday night and faced nine batters, striking out seven.

31 whiffs in the 12-inning game, btw.

I can't understand why, after all this time, MW can't get his major-league act together. Larry, any ideas?

Lee is flying into double plays now...will wonders never cease.

DP Lee

Chris Duncan has a herniated disc in his back now, not just a bulging one. Might need season-ending surgery.

marquis...Brenly says he has the plague, well actually it's the big innings that plague him.

nothing that a shot of penicillin won't fix. Yersinia Pestis (Y.Pestis)...might be a good nickname for Jason. Might be from those rats Ozzie found at Wrigley...are they carriers for the oriental rat flea?

http://www.insecta-inspecta.com/fleas/bdeath/bdeat...

is he getting hit hard or are these the seeing-eye variety?

A couple were cheap, but the last one was a line shot pulled to left.

only one hard hit ball so far.

today is a day where marquis has his sinker on and is getting unlucky.

... and the Cubs appear absolutely mystified by this pitcher... I feel like someone predicted this... Let's see if they are able to make adjustments the 2nd time through the order...

off subject, but anyone know where I can find Pie's batting average against lefties so far in the minors? He could actually help a major league team if he ever figures out how to hit lefties. thanks

try minorleaguesplits.com, altough I think milb.com has splits now as well.

Okay... maybe they'll catch on the third time around...

lot's of wasted chances.

I don't like the Cubs approach today. Guy they have never faced before, Soriano goes up hacking at the first 2 pitches of the game. Soto swinging at first pitches in each at bat, including after 2 walks.

Cubs will drop to 7-7 at Wrigley since the 14 game home winning streak if they don't turn this around late.

Me neither. That goose egg in the run column is not looking pretty.

Kind of sensed this one coming.

Rookie pitcher & post-Brewers letdown.

About what you would expect from Mrquis against a lousy lineup -- 6IP, 3R.

Let's move on.

No, dammit. Marquis gave them a chance to win, as did the relief pitchers. Don't give up! Score some runs and win this thing!

nada

That was pathetic! Bah!!

I blame Chad.

What, the pitcher throwing a no-hitter didn't hear you the first time you mentioned it?

buzz kill.

http://cubs.scout.com/2/774466.html

Starting pitcher Julio Castillo, who is no longer even on the Chiefs active roster, leads the way with a 60-game suspension that extends into next year. He was also fined $1,000 as his court proceedings continue Friday in Ohio’s Montgomery County. Castillo was arrested and charged with felonious assault after a fan was hit with a thrown baseball during the brawl.

Outfielders Brandon Guyer and Cliff Andersen, infielder Jovan Rosa, pitchers Steve Vento and Audy Santana and catcher Mario Mercedes were each fined $150 and suspended for three games. The suspensions will start Friday night against South Bend and will be staggered over the next week.

Carmelo Martinez fined $1500 and suspended 20 games...

Geez! well, looks like they're goin' to be shorthanded for a bit!

I think that was the "pinch-hit" manager who got suspended.

I wish there was a stat for, "BAA for Never-Seen-Before-Pitcher", or "BAANSBP".

The Cubs, in my memory, have to be under .200

I rag on MArquis, but today he deserved much better.

The funny part (and by funny I mean makes you weep like a little girl) is that this seems to have been the case through all different players, different managers and different GMs. At home and on the road.

Letdown game for sure. They had all kinds of chances with 2 outs but didn't convert, grounded into double plays with 1 outs. That's really something that concerns me if they were to make the playoffs, it killed us last year vs the Diamondbacks.

Looking it up the Cubs were 17th in the majors in GIDP, thats alot better than I thought they would be.

Damn. Pittsburgh really Randall Simonized the Cubs today...

We got Perogi-ed.

Cards and Brewers up big in both their games...

Phillies coming back now 5-3 bottom 6.

Bah! throw away game. Let's kick the tar out of them on the next couple games.

Z going today, I expect a win. Maholm's not going to get out of jams like Karstens did. He's just not that type of pitcher.

Sidenote: I picked up this year's version of Power Pros. Totally awesome. They added an MLB Life Mode that acts just like Success Mode, except you play as a major league player, either one you create or one already in the game.

And the Cubs are pretty damn good in game. Kosuke has his bat flip when he hits the ball, Soto has some power, and Pie... well, Pie sucks. His hitting cursor is tiny. Minuscule. Ok, you can train him to be a better hitter, and he has blazing speed and great defense. But he's the guy who's in center in the default starting lineup.

Big Z, though. Wow. He has seven pitches. And all five of his breaking pitches are level 4. Pitches that a pitcher has besides his four seamer are rated 1-5 in effectiveness. I almost threw a no-hitter in the first game I pitched with him.

Man, I love this game.

NO - Z does not do today, according to Cubs.com probable pitchers. Where did you see that?

It is Lilly today, and "Z" tomorrow.

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/probable_pitchers...

Crap in a hat, I keep forgetting that Zambrano didn't start the first game back from the break.

Still, my point stands. :)

Maybe Luis Montanez will get a call-up with the Orioles soon. He plays for their AA Bowie Baysox.

8 RBI last night. Season totals:

440 ab, 146 h, 31 2b, 5 3b, 25 hr, 94 rbi, .332/.383/.595

Stat gazer.

Why is it okay to gaze at minor league stats but not at major league stats?

  • I suspect the Cubs asked Chris Coghlan if he would accept an Optional Assignment to the minors and he refused (Coghlan has one minor league option left), so either you keep LaStella on the 25 and release Coghlan, or option LaStella to AAA for about a month and have both LaStella and Coghlan available in September-October. (As an Article XIX-A player, Coghlan must give his permission before he can be optioned to the minors, while LaStella has not accrued enough MLB Service Time to refuse an optional assignment).

  • Given today's lineup -- maybe they just wanted an extra OF to give Dexter a few days off (i.e. day game after a night game).

billybucks 5 min 41 sec ago view
  • Tommy LaStella has three minor leaue options left so it's no big deal to send him to Iowa, but as of right now he projects to be at 2+124 MLB Service Time by the end of the of the 2016 MLB regular season, which will place him "on the bubble" as far as being eligible for salary arbitration as a "Super Two" post-2016.

But if he spends at least twenty days on optional assignment this season (anything less than twenty days and he will accrue a full season of MLB Service Time), he will not have enough MLB Service Time to have a chance to be a "Super Two."

  • I don't hate Coghlan as a PHer but he's leading off today which is as bad as Austin Jackson doing so last year. He doesn't even have the speed.

  • TLS has options. He will be up again in Sept, and maybe earlier.

Rob Richardson 1 hour 24 min ago view
  • Very odd -- TLS .308/.419 in July (in 26 AB). Strange move for a team struggling to score runs. Hard to imagine Coghlan doing better than that. Maybe they like Coghlan better as a PH?

billybucks 1 hour 34 min ago view
  • Sorry to nitpick -- but the first game wasn't a save.

billybucks 1 hour 49 min ago view
  • Wow La Stella sent to Iowa and Coghlan brought up. I'm not a huge Stella fan but he has been hitting lately and is to me better than Coghlan. Neither are good defensively but I guess Coghlan can play the outfield allowing Bryant to stay at 3rd more where he's better.

  • Not 2nd to last but Cubs are definitely bottom of the pack in the 2nd half in oWAR and wRC+. #1 in dWAR though which is certainly a good sign for the playoffs.

  • I was going to say that you wouldn't want Heyward to achieve Soriano's OBP--.317 with the Cubs--but now I see that he's already done that. Pitchers have lost their fear of him.

Oh, well, at least Chapman seems to be as good as advertised.

VirginiaPhil 2 hours 4 min ago view
  • Thanks to E-man and Quiet Man for the link on Chapman in a previous post. It's funny because I never really noticed Chapman's delivery until I saw him doing it in a blue uniform. Two saves in a Cubs uniform already. I hope they don't need him today, despite that smooth delivery.

  • Cubs are middle of the pack in average, 5th in OPS, 2nd in walks, 4th in runs scored in MLB. Their runs scored ranks 17th in the MLB in July.

Boston, leading everything, continues to rake in July.

Old and Blue 2 hours 8 min ago view
  • Lester has given up one run or fewer in 11 starts this year. So I'd answer yes. Three of his last four starts were duds, yes. Not worried about him at all. Arrieta is concerning, to be sure. I look it at as, what he was doing was historic, so the regression was bound to happen. He showed in his start against the Mets that he's still capable, and I'd bet on him regaining his form.
