Kerry Wood to Be Activated; Eyre to Be DFA'd

One of our reliable readers listening to Bruce Levine of ESPN1000 out of Chicago, is hearing that Kerry Wood will be activated before the game and Scott Eyre will be designated for assignment. The Cubs will have 10 days to release or trade Eyre and will likely get nothing more than a low-minors prospect.

We'll see if Wood jumps right back into the closer role or is eased into it after a few appearances. I think after such a long layoff and pretty good odds that his control won't be there, that it might be best for Lou to give him a few low-pressure situations and let resurgent Carlos Marmol keep closing.

Speaking of Marmol, whatever was ailing from about the middle of June to before the All-Star Break seems to have cured itself. There certainly wasn't a shortage of theories on why he struggled, ranging from overuse to the struggles of a young player, it seemed the most obvious answer was just a "dead arm" period. Marmol's slider still had its snap, most of the time, but he started hanging it every once in awhile while getting away from locating his fastball that didn't seem to get above 92 mph. There were never any whispers of an arm injury and Lou certainly didn't let up on the gas during any of it, choosing to go the "just pitch through it" route. But since the All-Star break, he's thrown up a goose egg; 9 IP, 15 K's and 0 ER, although a bit wild with 7 BB's. He was hitting the mid 90's in the last two appearances that I've witnessed.

So welcome back Zeus and Kerry, you were both missed. And goodbye Scott Eyre, I shall never forgive you for contributing to Derrek Lee's broken wrist in 2006.

I heard Lou say, in the last couple of days, that Woody didn't want to go on a rehab assignment. In turn, he would probably try to get him a couple of outings "in the middle" before inserting him back in the closer role.

So... will people bash Wood for not wanting to do a rehab stint like they have bashed Soriano?

I think Wood has done enough rehab in his life.

Then again, it didn't bother me that Soriano didn't want rehab either.

Lindsay Lohan thinks rehab will do both guys some good.

Game thread in a bit..but lineup isSoriano, Theriot, Lee, Ramirez, Johnson, DeRosa, Fukudome, BlancoBerkman sits for the Astros with Pence moving to the 3 spot and Blum in the 5 spot at first base.

Berkman is still hiding under the covers this long after the lightning storm.

Who's playing second base? Soto and Blanco starting?

sorry about that...DeRosa batting 6th at 2b.

Heh, they should just try Hammering Hank at 2b.

Thanks.

So, now who's the team Fat Guy?

Lou.

Daryl Ward would wave but his hands are full of food.

I read an article yesterday where Marmol blamed his rough stretch on a lack of focus. He said after the All-Star game, he is much more focused out there.

Ward is easily the fat guy, if it has to be a player.

Yeah, Ward was my runner up.

What bothers my is how similar Cotts and Someninja look. With their beautiful looks and their flowing hair and eyes like pools of water that you can get lost in.

IF it were me, I'd DFA Ward and keep Eyre.

If what were you?

...up to...

Ward has become a 2-tool player:

1. Don't swing the bat whle being intentionally walked
2. Hit the occasion late-inning sac fly

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/10909...

it was mentioned in the previous thread, but in case it was missed...

When I first glanced at that article I got excited: "Rich Hill to AAA...". I thought, cool, maybe he's gotten better. Then I read the rest and got disappointed all over again.

Doesn't Cotts still have options? I realise that Eyre is only marginally useful at this point, but will less than a month until expanded rosters, it seems like DFAing him is a bit of a waste.

Lou refuses to use the guy regardless. As much as I think it's shortsighted. Stevie is the odd man out.

Watching the Comcast Pre-Game and they showed an interview with Scott Eyre where he could barely hold back the tears. As he fought them back he said, "Sorry, it's hard - I really like this place."

Man, I know it's a business, but these guys are also a part of a team. It really makes you feel for a guy like Eyre. He seems like a stand-up guy, from all accounts he's popular in the clubhouse, and he's given us a couple pretty decent years. It's gotta be really hard to be cut from any team, but especially when the team's in first place and possibly headed for a World Series.

That sucks. Poor guy.

Tough business.

I have always wondered who handles the logistics when a player gets traded while on a road trip. That would really be weird -- you leave on a road trip, pack a few clothes, then you never go home again, or at least not for a long time.

Of heard of a few stories of players leaving Cubs and missing them.

Bill Caudill kept a Cubs cap in his locker on any team he was on

Rod Beck buried in his Cub uniform

Kinda neat to see players enjoy themselves here.

If I recall correctly, Karros wrote up a classy thank you to Cubs fans in the trib after the '03 season.

On the Rich Hill note:

I had back spasm last night. But i'm day to day for now, but i won't be able to play until Monday at the earliest.

(true story about the back spasm though. I get them time to time and they suck)

Eyre being blamed for D Lee's broken wrist? Geez Louise...

His stupid misplay and bumbling put Lee in a very bad spot.

He wasn't the 100% cause of it, but if he wasn't a fat ass, he'd probably move off he mound a little better.

a bit of a reach, but as Chad stated, he had no business making that toss and his fatness and falling all over himself on that play caused the bad throw.

iirc: he stumbled off the mound on a makeable play, then in a fit of stupidity tried the glove flip trick while rolling on the ground.

And I was at that game.

What is/are the rumors about why Lou "hates" Eyre (as I think I've read here before)? Is it only poor production? Seems by all accounts that Eyre is a good teammate.

Not that Lou "Hates" Stevie that much. More the fact that Eyre never pitches. Lou refuses to use the guy and because of that. We are esentially stuck with a 24 man roster. If Lou doesn't trust the guy enough to use him. Then we gotta jettison him for someone Lou will use.

I think it's just that Lou didn't trust Eyre. During the interview with Eyre after he got DFA'd, one of the reporters asked him something about Lou (couldn't hear the question, only the answer).

Anyway, Eyre's answer was something like this:

"I think I did that to myself in the first half last year. I think Lou just never got over that. I don't have any hard feelings though. I mean that."

So it sounded like the question had something to do with his relationship with Lou or why Lou didn't pitch him more often, or something like that.

I'm guessing they just took Eyre out behind a row of lockers and shot him, right?

I'm surprised Berkman didn't pretend the lightning hit him in the head.

+1, Tito.

HAHAHA

Ha!! Excellent!!

  • I have no deep level of expertise or analysis here, but I still like Jason Heyward. I truly wish his bat was better, but I love the defense and the feel-good nature of his signing. I might be naive, but I think his offense will improve. I'm glad he's here, and I hope he doesn't make me regret saying that!

Kris Bryant is going to own the Cubs himself in 6 years :)

Without doing any actual research because this is the Internets, I have a feeling Bryant will break every arbitration record there ever was unless TheJedi can literally use the Force to convince him and Boras to sign a multi-year deal.

  • Hammel was supposed to pitch Friday, Cubs said it'll be a bullpen day instead.

Rob G. 1 hour 16 min ago view
  • Tis either a valid excuse for Hammel's recent struggles or a PR game when they try to trade him this offseason. Or possibly both

#Cubs say Jason Hammel has been pitching through elbow tightness and could have started if the team was still playing meaningful games.

  • Being young does have its advantages. Not that it helps Addison Russell last season.

  • that's not important.

the important thing is the cubs seem to have a new defensive whizz at 2nd base according to the stats...sample size warning and all that...but i have faith in him.

imagine him having to do this 20 times a season. 6.2 innings played, 20 assists, DEFENSE GOLD!

  • RVIMPENY: It's raining today so the Cubs will probably play intrasquad game(s) tomorrow and/or Saturday, but it's pretty much a day-to-day proposition, and a lot of times it's decided at the last minute.

Best bet is to check in at Riverview in the morning and ask somebody what's going on that day.

  • Thanks Phil, I had the Salt River chart, but based on that, it looks like they hardly play and was not on the Surprise on 9/28...I assume they do not really want fans there anyway? Do you know if they play today, Friday or Sat? Sorry to be a pain, but I am only here until Sunday.
