Kerry Wood to Be Activated; Eyre to Be DFA'd
One of our reliable readers listening to Bruce Levine of ESPN1000 out of Chicago, is hearing that Kerry Wood will be activated before the game and Scott Eyre will be designated for assignment. The Cubs will have 10 days to release or trade Eyre and will likely get nothing more than a low-minors prospect.
We'll see if Wood jumps right back into the closer role or is eased into it after a few appearances. I think after such a long layoff and pretty good odds that his control won't be there, that it might be best for Lou to give him a few low-pressure situations and let resurgent Carlos Marmol keep closing.
Speaking of Marmol, whatever was ailing from about the middle of June to before the All-Star Break seems to have cured itself. There certainly wasn't a shortage of theories on why he struggled, ranging from overuse to the struggles of a young player, it seemed the most obvious answer was just a "dead arm" period. Marmol's slider still had its snap, most of the time, but he started hanging it every once in awhile while getting away from locating his fastball that didn't seem to get above 92 mph. There were never any whispers of an arm injury and Lou certainly didn't let up on the gas during any of it, choosing to go the "just pitch through it" route. But since the All-Star break, he's thrown up a goose egg; 9 IP, 15 K's and 0 ER, although a bit wild with 7 BB's. He was hitting the mid 90's in the last two appearances that I've witnessed.
So welcome back Zeus and Kerry, you were both missed. And goodbye Scott Eyre, I shall never forgive you for contributing to Derrek Lee's broken wrist in 2006.

I heard Lou say, in the last couple of days, that Woody didn't want to go on a rehab assignment. In turn, he would probably try to get him a couple of outings "in the middle" before inserting him back in the closer role.
So... will people bash Wood for not wanting to do a rehab stint like they have bashed Soriano?

I think Wood has done enough rehab in his life.
Then again, it didn't bother me that Soriano didn't want rehab either.

Lou.

Daryl Ward would wave but his hands are full of food.

I read an article yesterday where Marmol blamed his rough stretch on a lack of focus. He said after the All-Star game, he is much more focused out there.

Ward is easily the fat guy, if it has to be a player.

Yeah, Ward was my runner up.
What bothers my is how similar Cotts and Someninja look. With their beautiful looks and their flowing hair and eyes like pools of water that you can get lost in.

IF it were me, I'd DFA Ward and keep Eyre.

Ward has become a 2-tool player:
1. Don't swing the bat whle being intentionally walked
2. Hit the occasion late-inning sac fly

When I first glanced at that article I got excited: "Rich Hill to AAA...". I thought, cool, maybe he's gotten better. Then I read the rest and got disappointed all over again.

Doesn't Cotts still have options? I realise that Eyre is only marginally useful at this point, but will less than a month until expanded rosters, it seems like DFAing him is a bit of a waste.

Lou refuses to use the guy regardless. As much as I think it's shortsighted. Stevie is the odd man out.

Watching the Comcast Pre-Game and they showed an interview with Scott Eyre where he could barely hold back the tears. As he fought them back he said, "Sorry, it's hard - I really like this place."
Man, I know it's a business, but these guys are also a part of a team. It really makes you feel for a guy like Eyre. He seems like a stand-up guy, from all accounts he's popular in the clubhouse, and he's given us a couple pretty decent years. It's gotta be really hard to be cut from any team, but especially when the team's in first place and possibly headed for a World Series.

Tough business.
I have always wondered who handles the logistics when a player gets traded while on a road trip. That would really be weird -- you leave on a road trip, pack a few clothes, then you never go home again, or at least not for a long time.

Of heard of a few stories of players leaving Cubs and missing them.
Bill Caudill kept a Cubs cap in his locker on any team he was on
Rod Beck buried in his Cub uniform
Kinda neat to see players enjoy themselves here.

(true story about the back spasm though. I get them time to time and they suck)

Re: Kerry Wood to Be Activated; Eyre to Be DFA'd
on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 1:12pm Permalink
His stupid misplay and bumbling put Lee in a very bad spot.
He wasn't the 100% cause of it, but if he wasn't a fat ass, he'd probably move off he mound a little better.
Re: Kerry Wood to Be Activated; Eyre to Be DFA'd
on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 1:16pm Permalink
a bit of a reach, but as Chad stated, he had no business making that toss and his fatness and falling all over himself on that play caused the bad throw.
Re: Kerry Wood to Be Activated; Eyre to Be DFA'd

iirc: he stumbled off the mound on a makeable play, then in a fit of stupidity tried the glove flip trick while rolling on the ground.
And I was at that game.

What is/are the rumors about why Lou "hates" Eyre (as I think I've read here before)? Is it only poor production? Seems by all accounts that Eyre is a good teammate.
Re: Kerry Wood to Be Activated; Eyre to Be DFA'd
on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 2:05pm Permalink
Not that Lou "Hates" Stevie that much. More the fact that Eyre never pitches. Lou refuses to use the guy and because of that. We are esentially stuck with a 24 man roster. If Lou doesn't trust the guy enough to use him. Then we gotta jettison him for someone Lou will use.
Re: Kerry Wood to Be Activated; Eyre to Be DFA'd
on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 2:47pm Permalink
I think it's just that Lou didn't trust Eyre. During the interview with Eyre after he got DFA'd, one of the reporters asked him something about Lou (couldn't hear the question, only the answer).
Anyway, Eyre's answer was something like this:
"I think I did that to myself in the first half last year. I think Lou just never got over that. I don't have any hard feelings though. I mean that."
So it sounded like the question had something to do with his relationship with Lou or why Lou didn't pitch him more often, or something like that.
