TCR Servers Preemptively End Season As Well
Sorry about the rather epic error message at the top of the site, working on trying to isolate the problem which seems to be somewhere on line 174 of the database. Considering I haven't changed anything recently, not sure what's going on and unfortunately I've got a full day planned around the Cubs game and the Angel Fan Wife's birthday. I hope to get it fixed by tonight.
UPDATE 7:47 PM: I think it's fixed.
UPDATE #2 7:48 PM: I'm done with this season.

Theriot out with a sore knee. Soriano out so he can practice hitting knuckleballs in the mirror.

Nothing spells success better than Sam Fuld, starting, and being your leadoff hitter.
I really can't imagine why we got shut out with that lineup.
Quick thoughts from the game...

Sam Fuld is awesome...
everyone else sucks...
might have been the farthest HR I've ever seen in person by Matt Kemp, he hit it over the bullpen in LF.

Well at least I won't have to put out thousands of dollars for playoff tickets to see them get swept. This has been the worst season, when taking into consideration of expectations, I can remember.
I hope Mr. Ricketts makes the necessary change at the top and finally cut the fat. Yes i am talking you you Teflon Jim.

Uh. Lots of things to complain about on this team. Sam Fuld isn't one of them.
He's at least a push from an offensive productivity perspective with Soriano and defensively a comparison is frankly insulting.
It would be refreshing if we didn't play Soriano the rest of the year to figure out what Fuld really has other then running into the wall catches.

apologies once again for the earlier issue, I had turned on a cache setting a couple months back and apparently it fills up after awhile. now that the season is over....the fun reading begins.
Sun-Times article by David Roeder.
http://www.suntimes.com/business/roeder/1729710,CS...
Summary of the transactions, titled...How Zell Botched Cubs deal. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. To think we had this baggage going on for over 2 years.
---
excerpts:
Oh, the tangled webs that Tribune Co. Chairman Sam Zell can weave. The long process he spun for selling the Cubs probably cost his debt-strapped company at least $150 million.
It also gave Zell an uncomfortable role in the federal corruption investigation of now-indicted former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
But his sell-Wrigley-to-the-state gambit delayed the sale of the team for months, at a time the economy was worsening and lenders began cutting off promises of credit. By late 2008, getting $1 billion for the whole Cubs package, including Wrigley Field, was out of the question.
Zell left Tribune with $13 billion in debt when he borrowed heavily to buy what was then a publicly held company, taking it private in December 2007.
The transaction in which he took Tribune private was a complex one. To save on taxes, he created an employee stock-ownership plan as the official owner, though Zell exercised control by buying an option to acquire up to a 40 percent stake. Bankruptcy has made that option worthless.
Zell completed the Cubs sale amid increasing pressure from creditors...his creditors are working on a plan to assume ownership of the company and elbow Zell aside.

Through May 17, Soriano was hitting .280 with 12 home runs, 25 RBI and a .383 on-base percentage. And the Cubs started 21-15.
- From that point through July 3, he hit .175 with two homers and seven RBI. The Cubs went 18-23.
- He was moved out of the leadoff spot for good at that point — to sixth — and hit .367 with five homers and 16 RBI as the Cubs went 15-9 the rest of July.
- Then came the August bust. He is hitting .162 without a homer and only four RBI as the Cubs have nose-dived to 7-13 this month.
Bottom line: The Cubs play .600 ball when Soriano hits (36-24) and .410 when he doesn’t (25-36).
Re: As Soriano goes so did 2009

Interesting stats...
We all know Soriano is the uber streaky hitter, but never thought it was tied in so much to the teams plight. But having streaky hitters, especially one of your most important, is not a good thing for an overall look to a team. As seen in the playoffs the past two years.
Fuld

Glad to see Sam Fuld has taken the current title of "Cubs Flavor of the Month." Sorry Jake Fox. Unfortunately I need to agree with MikeC, if Fuld is leading off, it is not a shocker to see why this team would have problems.
Re: Fuld
on Sun, 08/23/2009 - 12:00pm Permalink
Yes, if Fuld, with his .414 obp and rare (on this team) ability to steal a base is leading off we are so fucked. How many runs does Fuld save on defense over Soriano?
Re: Fuld
on Sun, 08/23/2009 - 1:03pm Permalink
Seriously -- what the fuck is wrong with these posters?
There are a lot of things to disparage this Cub team for, Fuld just isn't on the list.
He may turn out to be a 5th outfielder at best but he still offers more then Soriano does at this point.

Wrongway Phil Rogers even says the Tribune sucked during Tribune's reign in baseball...and his advice to Tom Ricketts is... Run Lola Run.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta1Sn6MtC9w
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs...
---
In the end, you would have to conclude Tribune Co. wasn't very good for baseball, but baseball was very, very good for Tribune Co.
Ricketts, if he's as smart as we think he is, will run from Tribune Co. ties, beginning with team Chairman Crane Kenney. There has been a rumor around for months that Ricketts has interviewed a group of experienced baseball types about becoming his leading man, including former Oakland A's general manager Sandy Alderson.
Re: TCR Servers Preemptively End Season As Well
on Sun, 08/23/2009 - 12:03pm Permalink
I find it fascinating that Tribune writers are so eager to promote firing Tribune big wigs. Besides Rogers, Sullivan wrote just a few hours after the story broke that Ricketts signed off on buying the team that Hendry should be fired if he won't agree to voiding the last two years of his contract.
Re: TCR Servers Preemptively End Season As Well
on Sun, 08/23/2009 - 1:34pm Permalink
Why would Hendry void the last two years of his deal? If the Cubs were stupid enough to give it to him, he deserves to get paid. Now that being said, Ricketts hopefully will clean house and get his own people in there who he beleives can make this a better organization.

Somehow it's likely Dusty's fault.
Re: TCR Servers Preemptively End Season As Well

Of course. There's no way Harang gets a bacterial infection if Dusty didn't throw him 115 pitches in 3 of his last 5 starts.

You think you have problems, Jerry Jones builds a one billion dollar domed stadium with a video screen in the middle that is so low you can't punt without hitting it.
Watch for a new rule book in Jerry's favor. Had the Bears that power, DB's would have to play 5 yards off Hester.
Had the Cubs that power, Kevin Gregg would have a girl's tee at 50', 5". Manny would probably still hit him, though. Heck, Blanks could hit him...
"Good luck, Mr. Ricketts." (Sounds like a new Tarantino film).
Looking back, we deserve a Cards' collapse just as the Cubs did 40 years ago!
Starts today in Mannywood! "It's Gonna Happen!"

Alderson would be OK in my book - although I would hope that the Rickett's family wouldn't clean house regarding the farm system. They're starting to make some actual progress regarding future position players.

Re: TCR Servers Preemptively End Season As Well

I say Wilken should get a pass until we get away from signability in round 1.
Colvin
Jackson
Cashner (because they were too cheap to pay up the year before)
Re: TCR Servers Preemptively End Season As Well
on Mon, 08/24/2009 - 3:52pm Permalink
It doesn't make any sense to give Wilken an imaginary star for drafting Weiters when most considered him the top collegiate hitter in the draft. All you need is the internet and the ability to google 'MLB Draft prospects' to scout Weiters out. Plus he's being outslugged and out OBP'd by the much maligned Felix Pie, so how good can he be?
Re: TCR Servers Preemptively End Season As Well
on Tue, 08/25/2009 - 12:38pm Permalink
In fairness Weiters
1. is in only his 2nd proseason
2. Already in the Majors in Said season
3. Our guy picked ahead of him is Struggling in A-Ball
Bottom line, is that every pick other than Samardizija has been a signability pick. And Samjay's Notre Dame celeb status likely led to his pick/contract with the cubs.
Re: TCR Servers Preemptively End Season As Well
on Wed, 08/26/2009 - 5:21pm Permalink
1. He's in his 3rd season
2. You would hope so, since he was signed to a ML contract
3. Vitters hit a HR last night and is going to the AFL - but LaPorta, the guy I said we should have drafted didn't make his MLB debut last season because of an injury and beat Wieters to the majors.
