A's Shut Down Cubs at Fitch

A's pitchers held the Cubs to one run on four hits while fanning twelve, as the Cubs dropped a 5-1 decision to the A's in AZ Instructional League action at Fitch Park Field #3 this afternoon in hot and sunny Mesa.

RHP Thomas Diamond got the starrt for the Cubs, and went two innings (54 pitches - only 32 strikes). He struggled with his command and labored throughout his two innings of work, although he only allowed one unearned run. His fastball was consistently in the low 90's, and he threw a few decent breaking balls, too, (at least the ones he was able to drop into the strike zone).

Diamond, the Texas Rangers 1st round draft pick in 2004,,was claimed off waivers by the Cubs earlier this month, before being placed back on Outright Waivers last week and ultimately getting outrighted to AAA Iowa.

Prior to being claimed off waivers by the Cubs, Diamond had been assigned to the Arizona Fall League by the Rangers, but the Cubs chose not replace one of the pitchers they assigned to the AFL with Diamond. Instead, the Cubs sent Diamond to the AZ Instructional League for some much needed work. (Diamond was one of the Rangers top prospects 2005-07 before undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery, and although he is able to pitch and occasionally shows flashes of his former self, his command generally stinks, like it did today).

Diamond pitched for Cubs Assistant GM Randy Bush back when Bush was head baseball coach at the University of New Orleans (Diamond was the ace of thev UNO staff), which is probably why the Cubs decided to take a flyer on the barrel-chested, 26-year old right-hander.

2009 6th round pick Brooks Raley (Texas A&M) followed Diamond to the hill, and had his ups & downs. The lanky lefty didn't walk anybody (although only 33 of his 53 pitches were strikes) and he did strike out four, but he also allowed two runs on three hits (one of which was a gargantuan homer onto 8th Street), a HBP, and a WP.

Hard-throwing RHP Trey McNutt (2009 32nd round draft pick Shelton State CC) followed Raley and also threw three innings, almost exactly duplicating Raley's line, the only differences being McNutt threw even fewer strikes than Raley (54 total pitches, only 31 strikes), didn't surrender a long ball, and walked one while striking out three, but otherwise he also allowed two runs on three hits, hit a batter, and threw a WP.

The Cubs offense never got going, the only run scoring in the 4th on an error, a walk, a ground out, and a Wild Pitch.

And catcher Brandon May (a converted infielder who is learning to catch at Instructs) had a bad day behind the plate, allowing two passed ball and one stolen base in just five innings of work.,

18-year old Taiwanese 2B Pin-Chieh Chen made his U. S. debut today, and went 0-3. He did make a strong relay throw from mid-RF to 3rd base attempting cut-down a baserunner, however (the runner was just barely safe), and handled four other chances at 2B flawlessly.

Speedy 17-year old Korean CF Kyung-Min Na left the game after fouling a ball off his ankle in the bottom of the 3rd, but he was able to walk to the clubhouse (albeit with a noticeable limp). I would guess he is "day-to-day."

2008 4th round pick Matt Cerda (broken hand) and 2009 11th round pick LHP John Mincone (June 2009 shoulder surgery to clean-up "debris") have been moved from the Fitch Park Rehab Group to the Cubs Instructs Active Roster. Mincone is scheduled to pitch tomorrow, and Cerda will be returning to the lineup sometime later this week.

Cerda, who was drafted as a catcher out of HS despite not catching since his Oceanside, CA little league team played in the Little Leegue World Series several years earlier, has been moved to 2B full-time, a postion he played off-and-on this season prior to his injury. Whether he will ever go back behind the plate (or get moved to yet another different position) is still TBD.

Meanwhile, Peoria RHP Marcus Hatley has undergone Tommy John Surgery and will probably miss most of the 2010 season while rehabbing at Fitch Park. And 2009 1st round pick CF Brett Jackson continues to nurse a sore wrist and is unable to play in games. .

Also, for those of you who might be wondering where 2009 10th round pick 1B-3B CharlesThomas is presently, he opted to return to Edward Waters College to complete his degree, rather than participate in the AZ Instructional League (to which he was invited).

He is today's abridged box score (Cubs players only):

Rockies win... nice finish to the season for Dempster...

Oh wow! Does this guy give investment advice? Very cool, thanks for the link.

Might not be much of a consolation, but the Cubs are eliminated with only 6 games to go. They've already clinched a winning season. Without an ARam injury... who knows... It was disappointing, sure, but there are some good things to take away from 2009: Randy Wells, Jeff Baker. Edit: ... Esmailin Caridad

Congratuations Cubbies for three straight winning years. Winning is the first step toward not being losers.

Raise your hand if you thought the Cardinals would be this good - and that they would have TWO Cy Young candidates:

I guess they don't have arm-slot problems over there. Seriously, they have a good pitching coach. Also, it cost them a prospect, but they were able to put Holliday in a uniform for a good trial period before committing big bucks to him. And . . . they told Miles to hit the road, while pretending that they cared about losing him. We went for the head fake.

theriot, fuku, baker, hoff, fox, scales, soto, blanco, lilly

Mccutchen, Laroche, Jones, Milledge, Pierce, Jaramillo, Bixler, Cruz, Morton

Interesting Trade: So the Cards acquired Wainright, a first-rounder (29th pick overall) from Atlanta in 2005 WITH The Old Ray King + Jason "1st-Half-Good-Luck-Charm" Marquis for JD Drew and Eli Marrero. Wainright made $687,000K last year, and is 29. Marrerro career: 243 .303 .411 .714 JD Drew career (now 33): .283 .392 .502 .894 plus, the guy has Kerry Wood-like DL time. Walt Jocketty fleeces Schurlholtz?

Sorry: "Projection Referee" will not allow - "And if their management hadn't been so cheap..." That is purely speculation. I gave facts. You know about those, right? JD had an excellent year in 2006 and came in 6th in NL MVP voting. But due to so much missed time, he will never be HOF material. 1 Barry Bonds SFG 407.0 24.0 91% 147 373 129 135 45 101 6 232 .362 .609 .812 1.422 2 Adrian Beltre LAD 311.0 6.0 69% 156 598 104 200 48 121 7 53 .334 .388 .629 1.017 3 Albert Pujols STL 247.0 1.0 55% 154 592 133 196 46 123 5 84 .331 .415 .657 1.072 4 Scott Rolen STL 226.0 1.0 50% 142 500 109 157 34 124 4 72 .314 .409 .598 1.007 5 Jim Edmonds STL 160.0 0.0 36% 153 498 102 150 42 111 8 101 .301 .418 .643 1.061 6 J.D. And of course, today's weird blog ad is: "Don't Waste Money at the Dentist" Exploiting The Recession: A Mom's Trick to Whiter Teeth Fabulous money-saving tips for me to consider when I am not working lol.

in the outfield... Milledge tried to kill Theriot on a double play, fair play though...

PWSullivan: Ejected from Wrigley Field bleachers and it's only 1:38. Cubs security escorts me out in front of eyewitnesses. Oh the indignation. --- Sullivan tweet...drunk? Or ejected for heckling bobby scales? Or taunting MB's ghost?

Sullivan must be drunk...tweeting his fuckin' head off today. Dumb shit too about ronnie woo-woo and attendance and blind reporters, at least Twittenmeyer only does lineups and injury stuff.

Last month the Cubs scored 10 earned runs off Charlie Morton in the first inning. Today he tosses a complete game 4 hit shutout?! You heard me. It's just not right. Theriot had 3 hits. I don't want to see the other seven jamokes ever again. Scales, Blanco, Fatsoto, the rest....bah, they're dead to me.

Twitenmeyer: Lee says he's fine and back in the lineup G2: fuld (cf), riot, lee, hoff (lf), baker (3b), rejo (rf), font, hill, Z Best sucky lineup ever.

I went to this afternoon's thriller. First time I remember the center field section of the bleachers being closed in my life. And I remember the Lou Brock trade and Kenny Hubbs' last flight. The upper deck used to be closed a lot in the mid-60s but I never remember any part of the bleachers being roped off. Also, I must say, great to see Bobby Scales playing right and getting some much-needed ABs. With the Cubs eliminated it's best to give some infielders in their 30s a chance to showcase themselves in positions they should never be allowed to play in the major leagues.

AZ: In this league, are coaches permitted to stop play when notifying the umps to instruct players?

====================================

E-MAN: No. The coaches will sometimes instruct players (verbally) between innings, but they don't stop play to do it.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?
