Ward-o-saurus Walks the Earth Again

In one of those magic moments that seem to happen during every team's playoff run, Daryle Ward went from one of the Cubs 2008 goats to Northside hero. His three-run homer in the top of the ninth was good for a .647 WPA, which seems to be the biggest hit of the Cubs season.

fangraph

Before that astonishing at-bat, Ward was 0 for his last 10, 4 for his last 29, and 4 for 40 as a pinch-hitter this season. Nothing like a big surprise in a big package.

WOOOOO SPRING BREAK i never gave up on ward. honestly. he's going to have another big hit or three by the end of the year, and probably one in october. big win!!!

from the sun-times: http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/1110937,CST-SPT-cubnt16.ar… --------------------- Piniella plans to use a left-handed lineup today against Marlins right-hander Anibal Sanchez, with Daryle Ward at first to spell Derrek Lee. Left-handed hitters Mike Fontenot, Kosuke Fukudome and Jim Edmonds also will play. ''We're trying to rest some of our people now,'' Piniella said. ''We couldn't do it as much last year because we weren't in a position to do it [in a closer division race]. This year, we have a little room.'' Aramis Ramirez didn't start Friday after bruising his left thigh sliding into home Thursday in Atlanta. But he was available to pinch-hit and might rejoin the lineup today. ''I didn't ask him [how he was],'' Piniella said. ''I talked to the trainer. A day off won't hurt him.''

so does this mean for every pinch hit HR, DLee gets a day off the next game? Kind of like it.

Damn... Z has some gaudy numbers at the plate. He has twice as many total bases (40) as any other pitcher. In 69 ABs, he's .362/.362/.580 (patience is not his strong point :-). The only other pitcher even comparable is Backe at .316/.381/.526, and he's only had 38 ABs to date. I'd happily trade some of Z's hitting prowess for more dominating pitching performances, but still it's great to see him help himself with the stick.

did you say pitching? last night's 1-0 I-Cub win was accomplished in less than two hours! Wuertz had an impressive 10 pitch, 7 strike, 2k save; K. Hill apprehended 2 base thieves;Felix fanned twice & grounded into a DP but hustled into the left field clubhouse for a bodily putout before returning safely to the dugout in the bottom of the fifth...the game barely lasted a bag o' peanuts; it was positively Madduxian!

according to ye olde world o' roto... s.marshall limited to 80 pitches and marquis to play long-man backing him up.

    Maybe Brewer

He'd be able to leave the Cubs. He's out of options. That would open up a 40man spot.

I don't think Jed would do that.

brewer has done nothing to keep him on the big league roster...imagine that's 1 guy gone.

yeah, it's only 2 appearances, but they were both unimpressive.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Yeah it is.....sorry......closers don't throw 89mph

It would be unique for sure.

But CP can't be HR susceptible

That's what Alzolay has right now and that's what Kyle has no matter the situation.

Supposedly Happ said on a radio show he's good to go

I hadn't read that anywhere from the usual accounts, so this could be off.

    If true, Canario goes down.

Hmmm. Maybe my idea of transitioning Hendricks into a closer role isn’t so crazy.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Mervis and Wesneski getting promoted aaccording to Tommy Birch from Des Moines Register.

    So Happ to the IL

    Maybe Hendricks to IL ????

    Mervis/Cooper are DH platoon

    Wisdom, Canario, Tauchman share LF/RF

I wonder if Busch has ever played LF?

    I don't believe he has

“I respect his track record of what he’s accomplished,” Counsell said on Sunday morning. “And you go through these. He’s gone through -- maybe not this particular stretch -- but stretches where you’re not pitching the way you want to and struggling. And you figure it out.” -- Counsell on Hendricks

    fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

i respect his track record of no longer being in the rotation.  in 2016 he threw 2 innings out of the pen, his only work out of the pen.  the cubs won the world series that year.  let's repeat that magic.  the formula is obvious.  stats don't lie.  etc etc whatever...

small sample size and all, but how about this craziness...

"Entering Sunday, Hendricks had allowed an .843 OPS against hitters in their initial plate appearance, followed by a 1.056 OPS in a second meeting and a 2.449 OPS when seeing batters for a third time."

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

  • crunch (view)

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.
