Mike Parisi: Cubs Hero!

From Bruce Miles latest blog:

The Cubs also outrighted the contract of Rule 5 pitcher Mike Parisi to Class AAA Iowa. Because Parisi had been outrighted once before, he was able to become a minor-league free agent and not go back to St. Louis. He chose to stay in the Cubs organization.

This should be the final piece to to tilt the axis of NL Central power to the Cubs. I hear plans for a parade down Clark Street are already under way.

The other roster move today was trading shortstop Andres Blanco to the Texas Rangers for a player to be named later or cash. Blanco was out of options and apparently the Cubs are comfortable enough with Mike Fontenot as a back-up shortstop. They could have tried to sneak him through waivers, but it appears the Rangers or possible another team was going to grab him, so the Cubs got something for him. With Starlin Castro and Darwin Barney in the mix, the Cubs have plenty of infield depth to cover the "loss". This was the first trade with the Rangers since 2006.

That leaves the bench as Koyie Hill, Jeff Baker (or Fontenot), Xavier Nady and then two spots left for Chad Tracy, Kevin Millar, Tyler Colvin, Sam Fuld or Micah Hoffpauir. Arizona Phil has heard that Tracy was already told to look for an apartment in Chicago, so it looks like he's in. That leaves one spot for Millar, Colvin, Fuld or Hoffpauir and with Colvin having the edge at the moment with the spring training he's had and an ability to play all three outfield positions. That being said, it seems the Cubs really want Millar to make the team, so don't be suprised if that still happens.

nice. i'm not much of a fan, but every little bit helps...money and arms.

what in the hell is with the middle IF ump standing on the SS side and **IN** in the infield?

Quite a Murderer's Row we're going to have on this team this year, eh? And when Lilly comes all the way back, it'll be like making a tra...

Sorry for the snark, but after looking at some of the White Sox prospects (as well as the current players on their Major League roster who came up through their system), the Cubs really look quite poor by comparison. And they've done it with a payroll that's significantly less, of course.

I am drawing a bank. They hit on Beckham and Ramirez was essentially a FA signing. Who are you talking about? The Cubs have more home-grown players than the Sox.

Dmac just holds a pre-Wilken grudge. He cannot see what has been recently happening.

silva mowing through the SD b-teamers (literal b-teamers in most slots)...5ip 5h 0bb 3k

his ER came on a classic "arizona sun, we can't give that OF dude an error, sorry pitcher dude" play that would be an out or error in the regular season...so it's not like suddenly fell apart out there.

the second ER came on the cubs 28th error of spring by a bad soto throw. neat.

pro tip: don't go 2-0 on colvin.

Nady to play OF tomorrow according to len/bob...then 1st in a minor league game the next day...then back with the regular club to play another OF game.

And on the fourth day, the D.L.

has caridad dialed down his velocity for more movement and control?

i'm yet to see him throw mid-90s this spring, but his fastball does seem to have more movement in the 89-91 area. it could be a park gun thing...only seem him twice on TV with gun data.

CRUNCH: Caridad's fastball was clocked consistently at 93-94 by scouts behind home plate today.

TV gun would be the issue, then. nice to see it seems to have a bit more movement, too. double bonus.

Padres now showcasing... Luke Gregerson

Tyler Colvin is not impressed.

holy shi...

colvin is the new murton...the fans at ho ho (lol) cam are going crazy after that triple.

That was a terrible AB by Baker with the go-ahead run on third and 1 out.

yeesh...this team needs to wake up it's D play...28 errors aside...

Marmol part 2: The Redemption now on WGN

trouble with first 2 batters with a fastball/slider mix followed by slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider

Hill calls fastballs.

That's why Marmol is broken. Hill isn't back there to help him throw 98 instead of 94.

IS there ANY chance that Fuku Dome gets moved for, lets say a closer, to make room for Colvin?

Not with $24MM left on his deal. No way.

Is there any chance the Cubs could get a closer more or even anywhere near as good as Marmol for Fukudome without paying the entirety of his contract?

Is there any chance the Cubs could get a close more or even anywhere near as good as Marmol for Fukudome even if they DID pay the entirity of his contract?

No. Trade. Clause.

I'm just worried you're using the term 'As good as Marmol' a little bit too liberally. Hate to be such a DD, but I'm not confident with how many pitches he throws and how many walks he surrenders. Really hope I'm wrong

Whoa! Wait a second, you haven't seen the Jaramillo Fukudome yet. He's coming soon...there's just been a little difficulty what with one speaking Spanglish and the other Japanish.

Because he did not exercise his right to be a free-agent when he was outrighted to Iowa today, Mike Parisi can file for free-agency during a window that starts on the day after the end of the MLB regular season up through October 15th UNLESS the Cubs add him back to their 40-man roster prior to the end of the regular season.

  • so far ryan williams (AAA) is the only system prospect on the "could be ready soon" horizon doing well...that said, he's not very exciting and he's assumed to be an end-rotation talent at best.

paul blackburn is getting great early returns in AA, but he's getting surprisingly low K numbers doing it. he throws lot of low/sinking stuff with good control...also assumed to be an end-rotation guy, but he's got room to be better, especially given his control as base to build on.

  • Speaking of pitching -- another ugly outing for Underwood at AA. Through 6 starts: 5.19 ERA, WHIP 1.69. Yikes!

Man, do we need starting pitching depth. Our best hopes are still hanging with AZ Phil in Arizona. Very scary.

  • Awesome report, and good to see Beeler on his way back.

I'm also very happy to hear about the bi-level bump for Daniel Lewis. In the Name of Theo, he was the Last of the Full-Season Cuts, and There Will Be Blood for those who unnecessarily slow his development. Sure, he might end up in independent ball pitching for Lincoln. But if everything breaks right, he may even have a shot at joining up with the Gangs of Chicago. I wouldn't bet My Left Foot on it, though.

  • CHARLIE: The Cubs did the same thing with LHSP Eric Jokisch last month, and it has nothing to do with needing the player's 40-man roster slot.

The hope is that another MLB club will claim the player, so that you aren't on the hook for any termination pay (which you would be if you release him) AND you pick up $20,000 from the claiming team, all for a guy you don't want going forward anyway.
